1 General Setup Set tone or pulse dialling mode NOTE • This manual shows the LCD messages of the MFC-L8650CDW unless specified. • Most of the illustrations in this User’s Guide show the MFC-L8650CDW. Memory storage Your settings are stored permanently, and in the event of a power failure will not be lost. Temporary settings (for example, Contrast and Overseas Mode 1) will be lost.
Chapter 1 Set the Time Zone You can set the time zone (not summer time but standard time) on the machine for your location. For example, the time zone for Eastern Time in the USA and Canada is UTC-05:00. a Press b Press Time). c d Press Time Zone. e Press . (Date & Enter your time zone. Press OK. 1 Ecology features Toner Save You can save toner using this feature. When you set Toner Save to On, print appears lighter. The factory setting is Off. a Press b c Press All Settings.
General Setup Sleep Time 1 The Sleep Time setting can reduce power consumption. When the machine is in Sleep mode (Power Save mode) it acts as though it is turned off. The machine will wake up and start printing when it receives a print job. You can choose how long the machine must be idle before it goes into Sleep mode. The timer will restart if any operation is carried out on the machine, such as receiving a fax 1 or a print job. The factory setting is three minutes.
Chapter 1 Quiet mode feature Quiet mode The Quiet mode setting can reduce noise while printing. When Quiet Mode is turned On, the print speed becomes slower. The factory setting is Off. a Press b c Press All Settings. d e 1 Touchscreen Setting the backlight brightness You can adjust the brightness of the Touchscreen LCD backlight. If you are having difficulty reading the Touchscreen, try changing the brightness setting. . Swipe up or down, or press a or b to display General Setup.

2 Security features Secure Function Lock 3.0 Secure Function Lock lets you restrict Public access to the following machine operations: Fax TX (Fax Sending) 1 2 NOTE 2 • Secure Function Lock can be set by using Web Based Management or BRAdmin Professional 3 (Windows® only). • Only administrators can set limitations and make changes for each user.
Chapter 2 Before you begin to use Secure Function Lock 3.0 2 You can configure the Secure Function Lock settings using a web browser. Before configuration, the following preparations are needed. a b Start your web browser. Type “vmachine’s IP address/” into your browser’s address bar (where “machine’s IP address” is the IP address of the Brother machine). For example: v192.168.1.2/ NOTE You can find the machine’s IP address in the Network Configuration List (see Software and Network User's Guide).
Security features Configure Secure Function Lock 3.0 Using Web Based Management i Select User List / Restricted Functions from the drop-down list for each user. 2 2 Set up groups with restrictions and users with a password. You can set up to 100 restricted groups and 100 users. Configure these settings using a web browser. To set up the web page, see Before you begin to use Secure Function Lock 3.0 on page 8. Then follow these steps: a b c Click Administrator.
Chapter 2 Setting up and changing the Public user mode Public user mode restricts the operations that are available for all users who do not have a password. When you set up restrictions for Public users, you must do it through Web Based Management or BRAdmin Professional 3 (Windows® only) (see Software and Network User's Guide). a b c Switching Users 2 This setting allows you to switch between registered restricted users or Public mode when Secure Function Lock is turned on.
Security features Changing to Public mode a Press XXXXX 2 . (Where xxxxx is the user’s name.) b Press Go to Public. NOTE • After a restricted user has finished using the machine, it returns to Public mode after one minute. • If the operation you want is restricted for all users, Access Denied will appear on the Touchscreen and the Change User screen will appear. You cannot access the operation. Contact your administrator to check your Secure Function Lock Settings.
Chapter 2 Turning Active Directory Authentication Lock on/off a b Start your web browser. Type “http://machine’s IP address/” into your browser’s address bar (where “machine’s IP address” is the IP address of the Brother machine). For example: http://192.168.1.2/ c d e Click Administrator. f Click Submit. Click User Restriction Function. Select Active Directory Authentication or Off. NOTE • You need to configure Active Directory Server Settings to enable Active Directory Authentication.
Security features Setting Lock Setting Lock lets you set a password to stop other people from accidentally changing your machine’s settings. Make a careful note of your password. If you forget it, you will have to reset the passwords stored in the machine. Contact your administrator or Brother customer service. While the Setting Lock is On, you cannot access the machine's settings. (For MFC models only) Machine settings cannot be changed through the Remote Setup utility while Setting Lock is On.

Security features Dial Restriction (MFC models only) Address Book restriction 2 This feature is to prevent users from sending a fax or call to a wrong number by mistake. You can set the machine to restrict dialling when you use the dial pad, Address Book and Shortcuts. If you choose Off, the machine does not restrict the dialling method. If you choose Enter # Twice, the machine will prompt you to re-enter the number, and then if you re-enter the same number correctly, the machine will start dialling.

Chapter 3 Changing a 2-sided fax layout You must choose a 2-sided scanning format before you send a 2-sided fax. The format you choose will depend on the layout of your 2-sided document. a b Load your document in the ADF. Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, press (Fax). When Fax Preview is set to On, press (Fax) and Sending Faxes. c d Press Options. e f Press 2-sided Fax. Swipe up or down, or press a or b to display 2-sided Fax.
Sending a fax (MFC models only) Contrast 3 Changing Fax Resolution 3 For most documents the default setting of Auto will give the best results. Auto automatically chooses the appropriate contrast for your document. The quality of a fax can be improved by changing the Fax Resolution. This is a temporary setting that will only be active for your next fax. If your document is very light or very dark, changing the contrast may improve the quality of the fax.
Chapter 3 Additional sending operations Sending a fax manually Manual transmission Manual transmission lets you hear the dialling, ringing and fax-receiving tones while sending a fax. a b 3 3 You can dial a number and start scanning the fax into memory—even when the machine is sending from memory, receiving faxes or printing computer jobs. The Touchscreen displays the new job number. The number of pages you can scan into the memory will vary depending on the type of information that is printed on them.
Sending a fax (MFC models only) Broadcasting 3 How to broadcast a fax a b Broadcasting lets you send the same fax message to more than one fax number. You can include Groups, Address Book numbers and up to 50 manually dialled numbers in the same broadcast. Load your document. Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, press You can broadcast up to 350 different numbers. Before you begin the broadcast 3 (Fax). When Fax Preview is set to On, press (Fax) and Sending Faxes.
Chapter 3 h i After you enter all the fax numbers by repeating steps f and g, press OK. Press Fax Start. After the broadcast is finished, the machine will print a broadcast report to let you know the results. NOTE Cancelling a Broadcast in progress 3 While broadcasting you can cancel the fax currently being sent or the whole broadcast job. a Press b Do one of the following: . • If you did not use up any of the numbers for Groups, you can broadcast faxes to as many as 350 different numbers.
Sending a fax (MFC models only) Real Time Transmission When you are sending a fax, the machine will scan the document into the memory before sending it. As soon as the telephone line is free, the machine will start dialling and sending. Sometimes, you may want to send an important document immediately without waiting for memory transmission. You can turn on Real Time TX. 3 Overseas Mode If you are having difficulty sending a fax overseas due to a bad connection, then turning on Overseas Mode may help.
Chapter 3 Delayed Fax 3 You can store up to 50 faxes in the memory to be sent within a 24-hour period. a b Load your document. Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, press (Fax). Sending a fax (MFC models only) Checking and cancelling waiting jobs Check which jobs are still waiting in the memory to be sent. If there are no jobs, the Touchscreen displays No Jobs Waiting. You can cancel a fax job that is stored and waiting in the memory. a Press b c Press All Settings. .
Chapter 3 Restoring all fax settings to the factory settings 3 You can restore all the fax settings you have changed to the factory settings. These settings will stay until you change them again. a Saving fax options as a Shortcut You can store all the new fax options you use frequently by saving them as a Shortcut. a Do one of the following: When Fax Preview is set to Off, When Fax Preview is set to Off, press press (Fax). (Fax) and Sending Faxes. (Fax) and Sending Faxes. Press Options.

Electronic cover page 3 You will need to have programmed your Station ID in order to use this feature (see Basic User's Guide). You can automatically send a cover page. Your cover page includes your Station ID, a comment, and the name stored in the Address Book. You can choose one of the following preset comments: 1.Comment Off 2.

4 Receiving a fax (MFC models only) Memory Receive Options j Do one of the following: Press Manual to enter the forwarding fax number (up to 20 characters) using the Touchscreen's keyboard (see Basic User's Guide). 4 Memory Receive lets you receive faxes while you are away from the machine. Press OK. You can use only one Memory Receive option at a time: Press Address Book. Swipe up or down, or press a or b to scroll until you find the fax number where you want your faxes forwarded.
Receiving a fax (MFC models only) Fax Storage The Fax Storage feature lets you store your received faxes in the machine’s memory. You can retrieve stored fax messages from a fax machine at another location using the remote retrieval commands (see Retrieving fax messages on page 35). Receiving a fax (MFC models only) Remote retrieval 4 You can change your code at any time. To make your code inactive, press and hold at step g to restore the default setting – – –l, and then press OK. You can call your machine from any touchtone phone or fax machine and then use the remote access code and remote commands to retrieve fax messages.
Chapter 4 Remote fax commands 4 Follow the commands in the table to access features when you are away from the machine. When you call the machine and enter your remote access code (3 digits followed by l), the system will give two short beeps and you must enter a remote command. Remote commands 95 Change the Fax Forwarding or Fax Storage Settings 1 OFF You can choose Off after you have retrieved or erased all your messages. 2 Fax Forwarding One long beep means the change is accepted.
Receiving a fax (MFC models only) Retrieving fax messages You can call your machine from any touchtone telephone or fax machine and have your fax messages sent to another machine. Before you use this feature, you have to turn on Fax Storage or Fax Preview (see Fax Storage on page 31 or Basic User's Guide). a b c d Dial your fax number. Chapter 4 Additional receiving operations Printing a reduced incoming fax 2-sided printing for Fax mode 4 4 Your machine prints received faxes on both sides of the paper when 2-sided is set to On. Use A4 sized paper for this setting (60 to 105 g/m2). If you choose On, the machine reduces each page of an incoming fax to fit on one page of A4, Letter, Legal or Folio sized paper.
Receiving a fax (MFC models only) Setting the Fax Receive Stamp 4 Printing a fax from the memory 4 You can set the machine to print the received date and time at the top centre of each received fax page. 5 Dialling and storing numbers (MFC models only) Additional dialling operations Combining Address Book numbers j 5 5 Sometimes you may want to choose from several long-distance carriers when you send a fax. Rates may vary depending on the time and destination. To take advantage of low rates, you can store the access codes of longdistance carriers and credit card numbers as Address Book numbers.

Setting up Groups for Broadcasting 5 5 5 A Group, which can be stored in the Address Book, allows you to send the same fax message to many fax numbers by pressing Fax, Address Book, Group name, Apply and Fax Start.

6 Printing reports Fax reports (MFC models only) Press i 6 6 Swipe up or down, or press a or b to choose an interval. If you choose Every 50 Faxes, go to step m. 6, 12, 24 hours, 2 or 7 days on the Touchscreen to set up the Transmission Verification Report and the Journal Period. The machine will print the report at the chosen time and then erase all jobs from its memory.
Printing reports Reports 6 The following reports are available: 1 XMIT Verify (MFC models only) Displays the Transmission Verification Report for your last outgoing 200 faxes and prints the last report. 7 Making copies Copy settings 7 7 Improving copy quality You can choose from a range of quality settings. The factory setting is Auto. You can change the copy settings for the next copy. Auto These settings are temporary. The machine returns to its default settings one minute after copying. Auto is the recommended mode for ordinary printouts. Appropriate for documents that contain both text and photographs. Press Copy and then press Options.

Chapter 7 2-sided Copying 7 You must choose a 2-sided copy layout from the following options before you can start 2-sided copying. The layout of your document determines which 2-sided copy layout you should choose. (MFC-L8650CDW) If you want to use the automatic 2-sided copy feature, load your document in the ADF.

Adjusting Density and Contrast Density 7 7 Adjust the copy density to make copies darker or lighter.
Making copies Contrast 7 Adjust the contrast to help an image look sharper and more vivid. a Load your document. b Press c d e Enter the number of copies. (Copy). Press Options. Swipe up or down, or press a or b to display Contrast. f g h Press Contrast. i Press Colour Start or Mono Start. Press a level of contrast. If you do not want to change additional settings, press OK. Sorting copies 7 You can sort multiple copies. Pages will be sorted in the order 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, and so on.
Chapter 7 Making N in 1 copies (page layout) If you are using the scanner glass, go to step k. 7 You can reduce the amount of paper used when copying by using the N in 1 copy feature. This allows you to copy two or four pages onto one page. If you want to copy both sides of an ID card onto one page, see 2 in 1 ID Copy on page 52. k After the machine scans the page, press Yes to scan the next page. l Place the next page on the scanner glass. m Press OK.

Chapter 7 2 in 1 ID Copy 7 You can copy both sides of your identification card onto one page, keeping the original card size. NOTE You can copy an identification card to the extent permitted under applicable laws (see Product Safety Guide). a Place your identification card face down near the left corner of the scanner glass. 1 1 4 mm or greater (top, left) Even if a document is placed on the ADF, the machine scans from the scanner glass when in this mode.
Making copies Adjusting the Colour Saturation You can change the default setting for colour saturation. 7 Making 2-sided N in 1 copies (MFC-L8650CDW) When you make 2-sided N in 1 copies from a 2-sided document, you must choose a layout option in 2-sided Copy Page Layout. You will be able to access 2-sided Copy Page Layout after selecting 2-sided2-sided for 2-sided Copy and any N in 1 layout for Page Layout. a Load your document. b Press c d e Enter the number of copies.
Chapter 7 f Select 2in1(P), 2in1(L), 4in1(P) or 4in1(L) in Page Layout (see Making N in 1 copies (page layout) on page 50). g Swipe up or down, or press a or b to display 2-sided Copy Page Layout. h i Press 2-sided Copy Page Layout. Removing Background Colour 7 Remove Background Colour removes the background colour of the document when copying. Using this setting will make the copy clearer to read and may save toner.

Routine maintenance Replacing periodic maintenance parts A The periodic maintenance parts must be replaced regularly to maintain the print quality. The parts listed in the table must be replaced after printing approximately 50,000 pages 1 for PF Kit MP and 100,000 pages 1 for PF Kit 1, PF Kit 2 2, Fuser and Laser. Contact Brother customer service when these messages appear on the Touchscreen. Touchscreen message Description Replace Fuser Replace the fuser unit. Replace Laser Replace the laser unit.
Packing and shipping the machine WARNING This machine is heavy and weighs more than 28.0 kg. To prevent possible injuries, at least two people should lift the machine. One person should hold the front of the machine, and one person should hold the back, as shown in the illustration. Be careful not to trap your fingers when you put the machine down. a Press and hold down to turn off the machine. Leave the machine turned off for at least 10 minutes to cool down.
Routine maintenance d Wrap the machine in a plastic bag, then place it on the bottom packing material (1). e Place the packing material (2) marked “RIGHT” on the right of the machine. Place the packing material (3) marked “LEFT” on the left of the machine. Place the AC power cord and printed materials in the original carton as shown in the illustration. B Options B Options B This machine has the following optional accessories. You can increase the capabilities of the machine with these items.
Optional paper tray B An optional lower tray can be installed on the MFC-L8650CDW and DCP-L8400CDN, and it can hold up to 500 sheets of 80 g/m2 paper. When an optional tray is installed, the machine can hold up to 800 sheets of plain paper. Memory board Your machine has 256 MB of standard memory and one slot for optional memory expansion. You can increase the memory up to maximum of 512 MB by installing one SO-DIMM (Small Outline Dual In-line Memory Module).
Options Installing extra memory a Turn off the machine’s power switch. Unplug the telephone line cord. b Disconnect the interface cable from the machine, and then unplug the power cord from the AC power outlet. B e Hold the SO-DIMM by the edges and align the notches in the SO-DIMM with the protrusions in the slot. Insert the SO-DIMM diagonally (1), then tilt it toward the interface board until it locks into place (2).
g Plug the machine’s power cord back into the AC power outlet first, and then connect the interface cable. h Plug in the telephone line cord. Turn on the machine’s power switch. NOTE To make sure that you have installed the SO-DIMM correctly, you can print the User Settings List that shows the current RAM SIZE, (see How to print a report on page 43.

Address Book Names and numbers you have stored for easy dialling. Cancel Job Cancels a programmed print job and clears it from the machine’s memory. Address Book List A listing of names and numbers stored in the Address Book memory, in alphabetical order.
Density Changing the Density makes the whole image lighter or darker. Dual Access Your machine can scan outgoing faxes or scheduled jobs into the memory at the same time it is sending a fax, receiving a fax, or printing an incoming fax. ECM (Error Correction Mode) Detects errors during fax transmission and resends the pages of the fax that had an error. Extension telephone A telephone on the fax number that is plugged into a separate wall socket.
Glossary Pulse A form of rotary dialling on a telephone line. Real Time Transmission When memory is full, you can send faxes in real time. Remaining Jobs You can check which programmed fax jobs are waiting in the memory and cancel the jobs individually. Remote Access Code Your own four-digit code (– – –l) that allows you to call and access your machine from a remote location. Remote Activation code (Fax/Tel mode only) Press this code (l51) when you answer a fax call on an extension or external telephone.
