Sheetvinyl:Aninexpensivesheetvinylor“slipsheet”(feltbackedwithvinylwearlayer)maybe
installed.Useapremiumgrade,alkaliresistantadhesiveandafullspreadapplicationsystemto
properlybondthevinyltothesubfloor.Followthesheetvinylmanufacturer’sinstructionsfor
installationprocedures.Abondtestmayberequiredasanadhesiontest.Installseveralsmall
areas(3x3)(1mx1m)andallowthevinyltosetfor72hours.Removethevinyl.Ifthebacking
remainsattachedtotheconcrete,thesubfloorshouldbeacceptableforsheetvinylinstallation.
Installthesheetvinylandallowtheadhesivetocurefor24hourspriortobeginningyour
hardwoodinstallation.Deglossasnecessarywithabrasivepadstocreateanadequate
adhesivebond.Alwayscheckforadequateadhesivebond.
A cousticConcrete(GlueDownInstallationsOnly)
Acousticconcretenormallycontainslargequantitiesofgypsumthatmayinhibittheadhesive’scapability
toproperlybond.Acousticconcretemustbeprimedwiththeconcretemanufacturer’srecommended
primer/surfacehardener.Testtheconcretebyscrapingthesurfacewithanailorothersharpobject.Ifthe
concretepowdersorcrumbles,itisnotsoundandsuitablefordirectapplicationofhardwoodflooringand
mayrequiretheuseofafloatingsubfloorsystem.Alwayscheckforadequateadhesivebond.The
concretemusthaveaminimumcompressivestrengthof2000PSI.

Allgroutjointsandbrokencornersthatexceed3/16″(5mm)mustbefilledwithacementitiousleveling
compoundsuchasArmstrongS194Patch,Underlayment&EmbossingLevelerwithS195
UnderlaymentAdditive.Thesurfaceshouldbecleanedandabradedtocreateagoodbondingsurfacefor
theadhesive.Loosetilesmustbereadheredtothesubfloororfilledasabove.Removeallsealersand
surfacetreatments.Alwayscheckforadequateadhesivebond.

Theflooringcanbeglueddirectlyoverfullspread,permanentlybondedacousticcork.Thecorkshould
haveadensityofnolessthan11.4lb./cubicfoot.Thecork,ingeneral,shouldbepurecorkcombinedwith
apolyurethaneorresinbinder.Installcorkinaccordancewithcorkmanufacturer’srecommendations.
Alwayscheckforadequateadhesivebond.
WoodSubfloorsandUnderlayment(AllInstallationMethods)
General:Thewoodsubflooringmaterialsmustnotexceed13%moisturecontent.Usingareliablewood
moisturemeter,measuremoisturecontentofboththesubfloorandthehardwoodflooringtodetermine
propermoisturecontent.Thedifferencebetweenthemoisturecontentofthewoodsubfloorandthe
hardwoodflooringmustnotexceed4%.Wheninstallingparalleltothefloorjoistsitmaybenecessaryto
stiffenthesubfloorsystembyinstallinganadditionalminimumof3/8″(9.5mm)approvedunderlayment.
Applicablestandardsandrecommendationsoftheconstructionandmaterialsindustriesmustbemetor
exceeded.

consumerwhoisbetterabletoevaluatetheexpectedresultbasedonsiterelatedconditionsand
performance.Thegeneralinformationprovidedbelowdescribescommon,nonengineeredjoist/subfloor
systems.Engineeredflooringsystemsmayallowforwiderjoistspacingandthinnersubflooringmaterials.
WoodStructuralPanelSubfloorsandUnderlayment(AllInstallationMethods)
Structuralpanels/underlaymentmustbeinstalledsealedsidedown.Whenusedasasubfloorallow1/8″
(3mm)expansionspacebetweeneachpanel.Ifspacingisinadequatecutinwithcircularsaw.Donotcut
inexpansionspaceontongueandgroovepanels.
Plywood:MustbeminimumCDXgrade(exposure1)andmeetUSVoluntaryProductStandard
PS1performancestandardorCanadianperformancestandardCAN/CSA0325092.The
preferredthicknessis3/4″(19mm)asasubfloor[minimum5/8(16mm)]or3/8(9.5mm)as
underlayment.
OrientedStrandBoard(OSB):ConformingtoUSVoluntaryProductStandardPS2orCanadian
performancestandardCAN/CSA0325092constructionsheathing.Checkundersideofpanel
forcodes.Whenusedasasubfloor,thepanelsmustbetongueandgrooveandinstalled
sealedsidedown.Minimumthicknesstobe23/32(18mm)thickwhenusedasasubflooror
3/8″(9.5mm)asanunderlayment.
WaferboardandChipboard:ConformingtoUSVoluntaryProductStandardPS2orCanadian
performancestandardCAN/CSA0325092.Mustbe3/4(19mm)thickwhenusedasa
subfloor,and3/8(9.5mm)thickwhenusedasanunderlayment.
Particleboard:Mustbeaminimum40lb.density,stampedunderlaymentgradeandbe3/4″(19
mm)thick.
