IGMP Overview

Note: Because DVMRP and PIM-SM run in separate processes on the XP, current IGMP
functionality may be used only with DVMRP. PIM-SM must use a separate group of
commands called “PIM IGMP.”
The XP allows per-interface control of the host query interval and response time. Query interval
defines the time between IGMP queries. Response time defines the time the XP will wait for host
responses to IGMP queries. The XP can be configured to deny or accept group membership filters.
Configuring IGMP
To configure IGMP on the XP, perform the following configuration tasks:
Create IP interfaces
Set global parameters that will be used for all the interfaces on which DVMRP is enabled
Configure IGMP on individual interfaces. You do so by enabling and disabling IGMP on
interfaces and then setting IGMP parameters on the interfaces on which IGMP is enabled
Start the multicast routing protocol (i.e., DVMRP)
Note: The XP does not allow users to enable DVMRP and PIM-SM simultaneously. If a user
attempts to enable DVMRP and PIM-SM at the same time, one of the following messages
will appear:
%CLI-E-NODVMRPFAC, This command cannot be used when PIM-SM has been
configured
%CLI-E-NOPIMFAC, This command cannot be used when IGMP or DVMRP has been
configured.
To switch between PIM-SM and DVMRP you must remove the protocol's start command
from the startup configuration and restart the router.
IGMP on an IP Interface
By default IGMP is disabled on the XP. To enable IGMP on an interface, enter the following
command in Configure mode:
Note: The XP will display VLAN and interface names up to 32 characters in length.
IGMP Query Interval
You can configure the XP with a different IGMP Host Membership Query time interval. The
interval you set applies to all ports on the XP. The default query time interval is 125 seconds.
Enable IGMP on an interface.
igmp enable interface <name/ipAddr>
