Where will you find beauty?
There are no rules.
Seeing a special scene in High Definition is to see the events as you remember them: in crisp, sharp, ultra-detailed glory. © Christine Lebrasseur © Umberto Nicoletti 15 Megapixels In that instant when you press the shutter, it’s not always possible to know what you’ll do with the final image. A 15 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor gives you the freedom to choose later.
© Mike Cable HD MOVIE RECORDING Some moving subjects cannot be expressed in still images alone. With the EOS 500D, you can capture moving events as they unfold. For scenes which demand exceptional levels of detail, choose the pin-sharp brilliance of High Definition (1080p) video recording. And if the action won’t stop coming, switch to 720p or VGA resolution and you can store longer amounts of footage on your memory card.
A good camera doesn’t separate photographer and scene; it brings them closer together. © Alexandra Leiser 10.1 Megapixels If you’ve honed your skills on a digital compact camera, prepare to experience a new world of possibility. Thanks to its 10.1 Megapixel sensor – with a surface area more than ten times that of the sensors used in compact models – the EOS 1000D will take you to places even the most advanced compact can’t.
© Alexandra Leiser Preview to perfection From high overhead shots to ground-level shots, sometimes using the viewfinder just isn’t practical. Switch to Live View mode and get a detailed, real-time 30fps video feed of your subject on the 2.5” LCD screen. The Live AF option gives you compact camera-style auto focus, with real-time adjustments visible on the screen. And to guide you towards the perfect shot, an optional grid line and histogram display can be selected.
Camera technology can’t make you a photographer. But it can mean the difference between a good shot and a great one. © Leon Baas EF-S lens mount Both the EOS 1000D and the EOS 500D feature Canon’s unique EF-S lens mount, giving you the access to all Canon EF and compact EF-S model lenses. With EF-S focal lengths all the way down to 10mm, you can capture entire landscapes in a single frame. Capture the buzz of large crowds, or the full atmosphere of an interior scene.
© Umberto Nicoletti The power of DIGIC In the instant between your shot being taken and its appearance on the camera’s LCD screen, Canon’s cutting-edge DIGIC technology is racing to optimise your image. DIGIC processors are able to analyse ultra-detailed image data gathered by the camera sensor – then use this to swiftly reproduce the subtlest of tonal gradations and an exceptionally wide colour range.

Changing settings should be as instinctive and effortless as pushing the shutter button. ADVANTAGE OF DSLR #4 Fast and focused The rapid burst rates of the EOS 1000D (up to 3fps) and EOS 500D (3.4fps) give you the speed to shoot dramatic action sequences, ensuring you always catch the decisive moment. And thanks to Canon’s sophisticated multi-point AF and Artificial Intelligence subject tracking systems, you get consistently sharp focus in every single frame – well beyond the reach of compact models.
Regardless of your subject, having a choice of lenses gives you unparalleled flexibility when choosing how to capture it. EF or EF-S? Browse Canon’s range of over 60 lenses, and you’ll notice that each one is marked with the letters EF or EF-S. These refer to the two different types of lens mounts used on Canon lenses and EOS cameras.
ADVANTAGE OF DSLR #5 Lens versatility From the monumental to the miniscule, a digital SLR lets you capture every subject – thanks to the power of interchangeable lenses. Show the extended panorama of a landscape, or the full ambience of an interior scene, with an ultra-wide 10-22mm lens. Attach a 70-300mm lens and fill your frame with distant subjects in crystalclear, image-stabilized detail.
Extra power, extra lighting, extra possibility; part of the joy of a digital SLR is that it’s designed to grow with you. © Rodolphe Simeon / Tapes ‘n Tapes Speedlite Flash Units Much more than just a way of shooting in dark conditions, a Speedlite 270EX lets you expand the capabilities of the built-in flash - from eliminating unwanted shadows in portraiture, to casting softer lighting on a subject by experimenting with ‘bounce flash’ techniques.
Process to perfection The EOS 1000D and EOS 500D are perfect for discovering the creative possibilities offered by RAW shooting. Unlike when you shoot in JPEG format, a RAW file retains all the pixel data captured by the camera. The result? More image detail, and more ways to make your best images even better in post production. To give you a direct, intuitive route into the world of RAW editing, processing and converting, every EOS camera is supplied with Canon Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software.
Glossary Aperture The adjustable or fixed opening within a lens which controls the amount of light that passes to the camera’s image sensor. Aperture size is expressed as an F-stop value (e.g. f/2.8): the smaller the number, the larger the aperture/ opening. CMOS The type of image sensor used in Canon EOS digital SLR cameras.
