Quick Start Guide This booklet describes the steps you follow to unpack and set up your printer and install the BJC-4400 Series Printer Driver for Windows®. You can follow the steps illustrated in the booklet to start printing in minutes. It also includes quick reference information to help you use the printer on a daily basis.

Canon’s limited warranty does not cover damage caused to Canon’s Bubble Jet products that is attributable to the use of third party parts or supplies, including inks. The limited warranty remains in effect for its life once that particular damage has been properly repaired. For optimum printing results, Canon recommends that you use only Canon BJ cartridges and BJ tanks.

Printing a Document This procedure describes the general steps required for printing from various Windows applications. The exact steps for printing a document may vary depending on the application program you are using. Refer to your software application’s documentation for the exact printing procedure. Start your application. Make sure the Canon BJC-4400 Series is selected as your default printer. ❍ Start the program you are using to create the document, and open the document you want to print.
Printer Setup Within Windows 98/95 You can use the printer with all your Windows 98/95 applications. Opening the Printer Properties Dialog Box in Windows 98/95 You can open the Properties dialog box in one of the following ways: ❍ From the Printers folder, you can select the printer and then select the Properties command from the File menu. ❍ From the Printers folder, you can select the printer, click the right mouse button, and then select Properties from the drop down list.
Printer Setup Within Windows 3.1 You can use the printer with all your Windows 3.1 applications. Accessing the Printing Options You can access the printing options from the Printers dialog box in the Control Panel, or you can select the Print Setup option available from the File menu of most applications that run in Windows. N If the Print Setup option does not appear in the File menu for your application, refer to the user’s manual supplied with the application.
The Windows Tabs The BJC-4400 Series Printer Driver for Windows has several tabs from which you can select your printing options and learn about your printer driver as well as your new printer. Using the Printer With Windows ❍ General (Windows 98/95 only) This tab allows you to add comments regarding the printer driver and print a test page or a separator page. (You see this tab when you open the Properties dialog box from the Printers folder, not from within a Windows application.
❍ Paper This tab allows you to specify page orientation, paper size, and type of print media. (The printing options on this tab are the same for both Windows 98/95 and Windows 3.1.) SPECIFY PAGE ORIENTATION SPECIFY SIZE OF PAPER SPECIFY TYPE OF PAPER SPECIFY PAPER FEED METHOD ❍ Graphics This tab allows you to specify print quality, color model, and print model. (The printing options on this tab are the same for both Windows 98/95 and Windows 3.1.
❍ Setting This tab allows you to turn on or off the Setup Analyzer and Cartridge Detection. It also allows you to save up to four custom print settings. (The printing options on this tab are the same for both Windows 98/95 and Windows 3.1.
Specifying Your Printing Options on the Windows Tabs Be sure to use your on-line help to find out about the settings available for each printing option. ❍ To move between the Windows tabs, click on any of the tabs. ❍ To save the settings and exit, click the OK button. ❍ To cancel your setting selections on a tab, click the Cancel button. ❍ To save your settings without exiting, click the Apply button. ❍ To access helpful information about the printer and the printer driver, click on the Help button.

Using the Setup Analyzer The Setup Analyzer allows the printer driver to evaluate your choice of printing settings. On the Setting tab, you click on the green ✔ to enable the Setup Analyzer. Click on the red symbol to disable it. When you exit the printer driver and accept your printing settings by clicking the OK button, the Setup Analyzer (if enabled) checks to see if any of your settings are contrary to the recommended settings.
Using Cartridge Detection If Cartridge Detection cannot detect the cartridge type, it advises you to check that your printer is on-line and that the cables are secure. If you choose the Monochrome Color Model and you have a BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge installed, you’ll see: Performance Tip! You now have a color cartridge installed in your printer. For faster printing speed, change the color cartridge to the monochrome cartridge.
Printing Speed Versus Color The BJC-4400 Series Printer Driver for Windows can interpret and translate the full spectrum of colors, up to 16.7 million colors. When printing in color, there is a significant increase in the amount of information that the driver has to interpret and translate. When printing with black ink only, the driver has only one color to interpret.
For Monochrome Printing Use the BC-20 Black BJ Cartridge to optimize the printer’s performance when you are printing black text and graphics only. In the BJC-4400 Series Printer Driver for Windows, choose the following settings to tell your printer to print using black ink only.
❍ Avoid automatic settings Although the automatic settings are easy to use, the computer must interpret the printed page. This takes more time than if you select each setting. ❍ Free up your memory Use only one software program at a time and unload any screen saving utilities or programs stored in Windows background; this frees up more memory for Windows processing.
Paper Handling 3 This chapter describes how to use the printer for all your printing operations. It includes: ❍ Selecting paper types ❍ Setting the paper thickness lever ❍ Summary of printer settings for various print media ❍ Automatically loading paper ❍ Manually feeding paper ❍ Using Canon’s Specialty Papers To ensure the best performance of your printer, you’ll want to select the best paper and load it correctly.
Selecting Paper Types One of the most important things you can do to assure the best possible performance of your Bubble Jet printer is to select the correct paper. Your printer produces letter quality print on most plain bond papers, including cotton bond and photocopying papers; it does not require special ink jet papers. However, the print quality varies with different paper types. Be sure to test a type of paper before you purchase a large quantity.
Brilliant White Paper Canon’s unique paper formulation gives you a bright white printing surface that produces incredibly brilliant colors and dark, crisp black text. This paper works great for proposals, color presentations, color charts/graphs, flyers, and newsletters. You can print on both sides of the sheet. (In your printer driver, select Plain Paper when you load this paper.
Back Print Film Canon Back Print Film BF-102 has been specially developed for Canon Color Bubble Jet printers. The film is designed to deliver brilliant, highintensity color images suitable for business presentations, design work, or professional reports. Back print film is printed on the back (nonglossy) side of the film in mirror image and then viewed from the front or glossy side using a backlighting device.
Setting the Paper Thickness Lever To ensure trouble-free paper handling, you’ll want to set the paper thickness lever before loading paper. ❍ Center for the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge ❍ Left for the BC-20 Black BJ Cartridge ❍ Right for heavier-weight print media or envelopes Paper Handling PAPER THICKNESS LEVER N Chapter 3 Be sure to check this lever when you change BJ cartridges, and before and after printing on heavier-weight print media or envelopes.

Loading Paper You can stack paper in the sheet feeder to load it automatically, or you can manually feed one sheet at a time through the manual feed slot. You can place approximately 100 sheets of plain paper (20 lb or 75 g/m2) in the sheet feeder at a time. You can stack approximately 50 sheets of transparency film or 10 sheets of back print film in the sheet feeder. However, these special media may not advance correctly under unusual environmental conditions (such as extreme temperatures or humidity).
Pull the paper support up until it stops. ❍ For letter-size and A4-size paper, extend the paper output tray. Pull out the paper output tray and its extension. Fan the paper. ❍ For best results, fan the paper before loading it. ❍ Always fan a stack of paper along the edge that will feed into the printer first.
Slide the stack of paper into the sheet feeder until it stops. ❍ Align the edge of the paper with the right edge of the sheet feeder. Start your print operation. ❍ Make sure that the printer is turned on. Paper Handling ❍ Secure the stack with the paper guide.
Auto Feed Guidelines When automatically feeding stacks of paper, follow these guidelines: ❍ Do not open the front cover while printing. This may cause paper jams, smudges, or malfunctions. ❍ Do not leave paper stacked in the printer for long periods of time; longer sheets of paper may become bent or curled over time. This may cause the paper to misfeed or jam. ❍ If your printed page contains lots of graphics, the ink on the page may be damp due to the print density.
D ❍ Do not try to load paper into the sheet feeder beyond the paper limit mark ( ) or the tab on the right side of the sheet feeder; stacking too much paper may cause paper feeding or printing problems. Paper Handling TAB ❍ Make sure there are no gaps between the stack of paper and the paper guide nor the right edge of the sheet feeder.
Manually Feeding Paper You use the manual feed function when printing on heavier-weight print media (17 lb to 30 lb or 64 g/m2 to 105 g/m2). Set the paper thickness lever. ❍ If you are manually feeding heavier-weight print media, set the paper thickness lever to the right. Start your print operation. ❍ If you are using Windows, you must select Manual Feed in the BJC-4400 Series Printer Driver for the printer to accept manually fed paper.
Insert the single sheet. ❍ Slide the paper into the manual feed slot in the back of the printer. ❍ Align the sheet with the left edge of the manual feed slot. ❍ Hold the sheet for about two seconds until it feeds automatically. After printing on thick paper or envelopes, set the paper thickness lever (inside the printer) back to the left or center position before printing on other paper types. Chapter 3 Paper Handling 3-13 Paper Handling ❍ The printer will automatically load the paper into position.
Printing on Envelopes You can stack up to 15 envelopes in the sheet feeder or you can manually feed envelopes one at a time. U.S. Commercial number 10 (COM10) envelopes and European DL envelopes are recommended. You may be able to stack envelopes of other sizes in the sheet feeder; however, Canon cannot guarantee consistent performance on envelope sizes other than COM10 and DL. The following envelopes are not recommended because they may cause jams or smears, or may damage your printer.
Prepare the envelopes. ❍ Arrange the stack of envelopes on a firm surface and press down firmly on the edges to make the folds crisp. ❍ Press all the way around the envelopes to remove any curls and expel air from inside the envelopes. PRESS DOWN FIRMLY ON THE EDGES OF THE FLAP ❍ Make sure any curls are removed from the flap of each envelope. Chapter 3 Paper Handling 3-15 Paper Handling Make sure the paper support is raised, and the paper output tray is extended.
Insert the envelopes. ❍ Slide a stack of envelopes into the sheet feeder until it stops. ❍ Align the edge of the paper guide with the left edge of the stack of envelopes. Start your print operation. 3-16 Paper Handling ❍ Make sure the printer is on.
Using Canon’s Specialty Papers This section provides guidelines for printing on Canon’s Specialty Papers and describes special procedures required for High Resolution Paper, Fabric Sheets, and Banner Paper. Specialty Paper Guidelines N Be sure to read any instructions that come with your Canon Specialty Paper. These instructions provide important information regarding how to achieve the highest print quality with these papers.
❍ Do not leave the film in the sheet feeder for long periods of time. Dust and dirt may accumulate on the film resulting in spotty printing. ❍ To avoid smudging caused by fingerprints, use a pair of thin cloth gloves while loading and handling the film. ❍ To avoid fading, do not expose the printed film to prolonged sunlight. ❍ Store unused papers and films flat. Do not remove papers from their protective packaging until you are ready to use them.
Keep the film rolled up for about five minutes. ❍ You may want to fasten the roll with a small piece of tape. High Resolution Paper HR-101 Using the Printer’s Output Tray Paper Handling The paper output tray on your printer is equipped with paper output guides. When using the BC-22e Photo BJ Cartridge to print on Canon’s High Resolution Paper (HR-101), lift the paper output guides on both sides of the printer’s output tray: ❍ Always lift both paper output guides.
Using the Cleaning Sheet Canon’s High Resolution Paper HR-101 is designed for high quality printing. This paper is specially coated to produce delicate color output. After using a package of High Resolution Paper (200 sheets), you need to use the cleaning sheet enclosed with the paper to remove paper dust from the printer’s rollers; this will help prevent paper feed problems. Set up the printer. 3-20 Paper Handling ❍ Make sure the paper thickness lever is to the center.
Insert the cleaning sheet. ❍ Remove the two pieces of tape from the sheet. ❍ Insert the sheet with the sticky side out (toward you) and down (going into the sheet feeder). Paper Handling ❍ Adjust the paper guide to the edge of the cleaning sheet. Press the RESUME button. ❍ Make sure the printer is on. ❍ Press RESUME to advance the cleaning sheet into the printer. ❍ Press RESUME again to start cleaning. ❍ The printer feeds the sheet and then ejects it. ❍ Use a cleaning sheet once only.
Fabric Sheet FS-101 Fabric Sheet FS-101 for Canon printers comes with a booklet that describes special handling procedures. Be sure to look through this booklet for special information regarding the Fabric Sheets. This section describes specific steps for using Fabric Sheets with the printer. Be sure to follow these guidelines. ❍ To avoid paper jams, smearing, and other problems, do not open the printer’s cover during printing. ❍ Use the fixing agent that comes with the Fabric Sheet FS-101.
Insert the fabric sheet. ❍ Insert the sheet with the cloth side out (toward you) and the open end up (away from the sheet feeder). ❍ Adjust the paper guide to the edge of the fabric sheet. Paper Handling ❍ Do not attempt to load more than one sheet at a time. Set up the BJC-4400 Series Printer Driver for Windows. ❍ In the Paper tab, select A4 for the Paper Size and select Fabric Sheet for the Print Media. ❍ In the Graphics tab, select High for the Print Quality. You may also want to select Fine mode.
Dry and then wash the fabric sheet. ❍ Let the printed fabric sheet set for about one hour to allow the ink to completely dry. ❍ When dry, peel the film backing from the printed fabric sheet. Do not remove the film backing before printing. ❍ Wash the printed fabric sheet for about three minutes under lukewarm running water to remove extra ink. ❍ Hang the fabric sheet up to dry it again. ❍ Iron the dried fabric sheet with a clothes iron.
N ❍ Printing on banner paper requires quite a bit of ink. If you think your BJ cartridge may run out of ink, use a new BJ cartridge. ❍ For best print results on banner paper, use light design patterns. ❍ To prevent ink from running over the edges of the sheet, print within the margins shown in the previous illustration. Set the paper thickness lever for banner paper ❍ Open the front cover. Use both hands to open the front cover. ❍ Set the paper thickness lever to the right.
Pull out the paper output tray and lift the paper output guides. Insert the banner paper. ❍ Do not pull out the extension on the tray. ❍ Do not pull up the paper support. ❍ Align the first sheet of the paper with the right edge of the sheet feeder and slide it into the printer until it stops. ❍ Then adjust the paper guide to the edge of the paper. ❍ Do not allow the paper to hang over the edge of the desk or work table. ❍ Do not extend the paper support when loading banner paper.
❍ Gently fold the paper at the crease between the first and second sheet. Make sure the paper exit area is clear. ❍ Clear space in front of the paper output slot of the printer for at least one sheet. Chapter 3 Paper Handling 3-27 Paper Handling Fold the banner paper.
Set up your printer driver. Start printing. ❍ Open the Windows application you are going to use to print. From the File menu, select Print. Then select your print options using the BJC-4400 Series Printer Driver for Windows. ● For the Paper Feed Method, select Automatic Feed. ● For the Paper size, select Banner. ● See your application software instructions for other options. ❍ Click OK or Print to start the print job. ❍ Do not allow the paper to hang over the edge of the desk or work table directly.
Maintaining the Printer 4 This chapter covers the care required for your printer.
Printer Guidelines Follow these guidelines to avoid damage to your printer and harm to you or others: ❍ Set the printer on a stable surface. Do not use an angled printer stand. Avoid setting the printer in direct sunlight. ❍ Keep the front cover closed when printing. ❍ Do not set anything on top of the printer. ❍ Make sure the power is off any time you connect or disconnect the AC adapter or interface cable. ❍ Do not unplug the AC adapter unnecessarily.
Cleaning the Printer Your printer requires little routine maintenance. Perform the following maintenance, as necessary, to keep your printer in good operating condition. C ❍ Make sure the printer is turned off before cleaning it. It is a good idea to unplug the AC adapter also. ❍ Do not clean the exterior of the printer with volatile liquids such as thinners, benzine, or any spray-type or chemical cleaners; doing so will damage the surface of the printer.
Printing the Test Pages You can print these test pages to check the operation of your printer and your print quality. If a test page indicates poor print quality, try cleaning the print head (see page 4-6). If necessary, replace the BJ cartridge. Test A This test prints a repeating pattern of characters. Demonstration This test prints a sample page describing the printer’s features.
Nozzle Test Use this test print to check that each print head nozzle is operating properly. When the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge is installed, the pattern includes all four colors: yellow, magenta, cyan, and black. In the color pattern, you’ll notice that lines are missing between the colors. This is normal. The following sample shows the Nozzle Test when the optional BC-20 Black BJ Cartridge is installed.
Printing the Test Pages Using the Operator Panel To print a test page, make sure the printer is turned off and paper is loaded. ❍ Press and hold the POWER button until you hear the number of beeps that correspond to the test page you want to print. Cleaning the Print Head Using the Operator Panel If you want to clean the print head from the operator panel, follow these steps: Make sure the printer is turned on. Press and hold the RESUME button for at least two seconds until the printer beeps twice. ❍ Make sure the green POWER light is on. ❍ The POWER light will blink for several seconds while the print head is being cleaned. N ❍ Perform the print head cleaning only when you encounter a print quality problem.
BJ Cartridge Guidelines You can use these cartridges with the printer: ❍ BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge Contains the print head unit and two replaceable BJ tanks—the BCI-21 Color BJ Tank contains color ink (cyan, magenta, yellow) and the BCI-21 Black BJ Tank contains black ink. You can replace the BJ tanks without replacing the print head unit when you run out of ink. ❍ BC-20 Black BJ Cartridge Contains the print head unit and black ink only. Use this cartridge when you will be printing with black ink only.
You may need to replace the BJ cartridge or a BJ tank when your printed output is not crisp and clear and there are gaps in the characters (missing dots)—even after you have cleaned the print head at least five times. If you are using the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge and your output is blank, one of the BJ tanks is probably out of ink. See the instructions starting on page 4-18 for replacing a BJ tank.
BJ Cartridge and BJ Tank Maintenance The most important thing you can do to extend the life of your printer and to ensure optimum print quality is take care of the BJ cartridges. C Spilled ink can stain any surface. Open BJ cartridges and BJ tanks carefully, and follow the guidelines presented here to protect against spilled ink. ❍ If you are using both the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge and any other BJ cartridges, make sure you store the cartridge not being used in the Ink Cartridge Storage Box.
Replacing the BJ Cartridge The following procedure describes how to replace the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge with the BC-20 Black BJ Cartridge. Follow the instructions in this section to replace an old BJ cartridge or to change BJ cartridges when you are switching between the BC-21e and any of the other BJ cartridges. You only need to replace the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge when the print head is damaged (or after printing approximately 2000 pages).
Press the CARTRIDGE button once. ❍ The printer beeps and moves the cartridge holder to the center of the printer. ❍ The POWER light blinks while the cartridge holder is positioned in the center of the printer. CARTRIDGE BUTTON N Do not attempt to move the cartridge holder manually. This may damage the printer. Lift the green lock lever on the cartridge holder.
Slide the BJ cartridge out of the holder. ❍ If you are replacing an old BJ cartridge, dispose of the old cartridge properly. ❍ If you are switching cartridges, you must store the cartridge you are removing in the Ink Cartridge Storage Box. Maintaining the Printer Store or dispose of the BJ cartridge.
Take the new BJ cartridge out of its protective packaging. Remove the protective material from the BJ cartridge. ❍ Peel off the protective foil. ❍ Lift off the cap from the print head and then remove the tape. CAP Slide the BJ cartridge straight into the cartridge holder. 4-14 TAPE ❍ Be careful not to touch the rollers with the print head. ❍ Make sure the cartridge is pressed against the back of the holder.
Press the lock lever down completely; do not use excessive force. ❍ Make sure the marks on the lever and the cartridge holder align. ❍ The BJ cartridge is now positioned and locked. LOCK LEVER Maintaining the Printer C Do not manually move the mechanism that houses the BJ cartridge. Attempting to move the BJ cartridge holder will damage the printer.
Set the paper thickness lever. ❍ If you installed the BC-20 Black BJ Cartridge, set the paper thickness lever to the left. ❍ If you installed the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge, set the paper thickness lever to the center.
Press the CARTRIDGE button. ❍ The printer beeps and moves the cartridge holder to the home position on the right side of the printer. ❍ The printer cleans the print head automatically. Replacing a BJ Tank in the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge If you perform a print operation correctly but the output is blank, a BJ tank may be out of ink. Perform the print head cleaning at least five times. If the output is still blank, replace the empty BJ tank in the BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge. Leave the BJ cartridge in the printer when replacing a BJ tank. Make sure the printer’s power is on. Open the front cover. ❍ Use both hands to grasp the sides of the cover and pull it forward.
Remove the empty BJ tank. ❍ The color BJ tank is on the left; the black BJ tank is on the right. ❍ Grasp the tab on the top of the tank and pull forward to release the BJ tank. ❍ Then lift the BJ tank up and out of the BJ cartridge unit. Take the new BJ tank out of its packaging. Chapter 4 Maintaining the Printer ❍ Dispose of the BJ tank properly. You may want to place it in a plastic bag to keep from spilling any residual ink. ❍ Then remove the protective cap.
Slide the new BJ tank into the empty slot on the BJ cartridge. Press firmly on the tab on the top of the BJ tank until it snaps into place.
Make sure each BJ tank is correctly seated in its respective slot. ❍ If you are replacing both tanks, repeat steps 3 through 6 for the other BJ tank. Press the CARTRIDGE button. ❍ The printer beeps and moves the cartridge holder to the home position on the right of the printer. ❍ The printer automatically cleans the print head unit. Maintaining the Printer CARTRIDGE BUTTON Close the printer’s front cover. Chapter 4 ❍ Use both hands to lift the cover into place and press firmly to close it.
Storing a BJ Cartridge Whenever you unwrap a BJ cartridge, you must either install it in the printer or store it in the Ink Cartridge Storage Box to prevent the print head from drying and clogging. Open the Ink Cartridge Storage Box. ❍ When opening the Ink Cartridge Storage Box, press in on the release tab that locks the cover in place. Carefully set the cartridge in the storage box. ❍ You must insert the cartridge correctly or the storage box will not close.
Close the storage box. N ❍ Be sure the lid snaps closed. Whenever you remove a BJ cartridge from the printer, store the cartridge in the storage box (unless you are disposing it). Maintaining the Printer If you have more than one Ink Cartridge Storage Box, you can hook them together. Simply connect them by the slides and grooves on the sides of the containers.
Installing and Removing the Optional Color Image Scanner Cartridge You can easily convert your printer into a color scanner by installing the optional IS-22 Color Image Scanner Cartridge. This section describes how to install and remove the Color Image Scanner Cartridge. For details on operating the printer as a scanner, see the IS-22 Color Image Scanner Cartridge User’s Manual that comes with the scanner cartridge package.
Remove the scanner cartridge from its packaging. ❍ Handle the scanner cartridge carefully. Insert the scanner cartridge. ❍ Hold the scanner cartridge by the ridges on either side of the cartridge. ❍ Do not touch the scanning head area. ❍ Match the groove on the scanner cartridge with the guide on the cartridge holder. ❍ Slide the scanner cartridge into the holder and hold it in position.
Lower the lock lever. ❍ Slowly press the lock lever down completely until the mark on the lever is aligned with the mark on the cartridge holder. Set the paper thickness lever to the center.
Press the CARTRIDGE button once and close the front cover. ❍ The cartridge holder moves to the home position on the right. CARTRIDGE BUTTON Removing the Color Image Scanner Cartridge C Always remove the Color Image Scanner Cartridge as soon as you are finished scanning pictures and replace it with a BJ cartridge. Do not leave the Color Image Scanner Cartridge in the printer. Store the scanner cartridge in the soft plastic case provided with the cartridge.
C Never store the IS-22 Color Image Scanner Cartridge in an Ink Cartridge Storage Box that has been used for a BJ cartridge. The pad in the storage box where the head of a BJ cartridge rests is covered with ink that will damage the scanning head of the IS-22 Color Image Scanner Cartridge. Be sure to replace the BJ cartridge in the printer after you remove the scanner cartridge.

Repack the printer in its original packing materials. 4-30 ❍ Do not remove the BJ cartridge from the printer or ship a BJ cartridge or an ink tank from which you have removed the protective cap. An opened BJ cartridge or BJ tank that is not installed in the printer may leak, and the print head may dry out. Also, if you do not tape the BJ cartridge to the side of the printer, ink may spill into the printer.

Clearing Paper Jams When a paper jam occurs, the POWER light turns orange and the printer goes off-line. Press the POWER button. Gently pull the paper out with one hand while holding down the printer with the other hand. Press the POWER button to turn the printer back on. Glossary G Automatic feed Refers to one way in which paper can be fed into the printer when the sheet feeder is used. BJ cartridge The printing mechanism that contains the print head unit and BJ tanks. BJ tank Glossary The special type of ink container housed by the BJ cartridge. The BC-21e Color BJ Cartridge contains two BJ tanks: one color (which includes cyan, yellow, magenta) and one black.
dB(A) Stands for decibel level (a decibel being a unit of measurement for the intensity of the sound coming from the printer), adjusted for background noise. dpi Dots per inch. A unit of measurement for indicating a printer’s resolution. Your printer can produce a resolution up to 720 × 360 dpi. Font A complete set of characters of the same size and style; a particular implementation of a typeface. For example, 12-point, Courier bold.
lpi Lines per inch. The measurement used in describing the number of lines that will print within one vertical inch. Most printing is done in 6 or 8 lpi. Manual feed A method of feeding paper to the printer one sheet at a time. Noise level See dB(A). Page orientation Refers to the direction of print on the page. Printing across the width of a page is called portrait orientation. Printing across the length of a page is called landscape orientation.
Printable area The area of a sheet of paper on which a printer can reproduce text or graphics (the printing area is smaller than the paper). On this printer, the printing area varies depending on the type of paper being used. Printer driver Software that sends printing instructions to a printer.
