Expansive White Balance Controls
Proper use of white balance makes good
images great, and the EOS 10D lets you take
the kind of control over white balance that
was once limited to the highest quality
professional cameras.
Preset White Balance Settings
Presets correctly and easily compensate a
wide variety of light sources: Daylight, Overcast,
Shade, Tungsten, Fluorescent and Flash. There
is also Hybrid Auto for effortless shooting, and
Custom, which lets you shoot a white object in
the given lighting, then lock in the proper white
balance via a display on the LCD screen.
Daylight: For shooting outdoors on
sunny days.
Overcast: For shooting outdoors on
cloudy days.
Shade: New for the EOS 10D, counters
strong blue tones typical in open shade
on sunny days, approx. 7,000.
Tungsten: Provides a good balance with
photofloods or incandescent household
lights.
Fluorescent: Provides added emphasis
to eliminate the green “spike” of com-
mon fluorescent tubes.
Flash: A good starting point with many
studio Provides a good balance with
photofloods or incandescent household
lights.
Hybrid Auto: Ideal when you want the
camera to be able to react to changing
lighting conditions and automatically
adjust white balance.
Custom: Precise method that uses a
reference image of an 18% gray card
or white object for maximum white
balance accuracy.
White Balance Bracketing
To ensure success in even the most difficult-
to-read situations, the camera’s WB bracketing
system captures 3 images (normal, reddish
and bluish) with one shot. You select the steps
in +/-3 whole-stop increments, each equivalent
to 5 mireds.
Pro- level Color Temperature Control
For the most precise level of control over
color, the camera allows you to set white bal-
ance in kelvin values over a range of 2,800K
to 10,000K in extremely fine 100K increments.
High-strength MetalChassis, Ergonomic Design
The EOS 10D’s design places it among Canon’s

RAW and JPEG at Any Resolution
The EOS 10D embeds a JPEG file into every
RAW image you shoot, with exclusive software
provided that enables the JPEG to be extracted
quickly for immediate access. RAW files contain
complete imaging information for ultimate lati-
tude in processing parameter settings, while
more compact JPEGs are ideal for quick previews
or sending over the Internet. Having both
formats frees you from deciding an end use
before you shoot. While RAW files are always
captured at maximum resolution, there are 6
options for the image quality (resolution/
compression) of the embedded JPEG file. This
allows the photographer to select the optimum
file size and image quality according to the
application.
The E-TTL Flash Exposure System
The camera’s own built-in, pop-up flash provides
stable, intelligently metered illumination, with
automatic flash output reduction and red-eye
reduction, and a creative slow-sync option. As
a major advantage to photographers who want
even more control, the camera is compatible
with Canon’s most advanced flash exposure
control system: E-TTL (Evaluative Through-The-
Lens). The system works with an attached EX-
series dedicated Speedlite, using a pre-flash
that the camera analyzes to compare ambient
light exposure values with illumination reflected
from the subject by the pre-flash. With this
data, it calculates and stores the optimal flash
output required for the main subject (according
to the AF-point that has been selected),
simultaneously balancing the foreground and
background. The system ensures you of flash
photography that is
extremely accurate,
with consistent,
highly natural
exposures in
challenging
lighting
situations.
Extensive Flash Options
E-TTL also gives you access to professional
photographic techniques that both inspire and
support your most creative expression. With
first- or second-curtain synchronization, moving
objects come to life in low light. FE Lock lets
you recompose shots while maintaining correct
exposure in even the brightest light. High-speed
Sync lets you set larger apertures for daylight
fill-flash photography, creating beautiful back-
ground blur. Attach the Speedlite 550EX and
Macro Twin Lite MR-14EX or Macro
Twin Lite
MT-24EX for Flash Exposure Bracketing
(+/-3EV
in 1/3- to 1/2-step increments) with a constant
background exposure level.
Wireless Auto Flash System
With an attached Speedlite, the camera can
control
up to 3 groups of slave units (for main,
fill and
background flash) with no cumbersome
connecting
wires. Information is gathered from
the ambient light and pre-flash readings from
each slave group, stored in memory, and
added into to the flash output calculation.
Speedlites are then fired simultaneously. You’ll
even be able to set a flash ratio for the main and
fill light slave groups to create custom illumina-
tion of a scene. This ratio can be adjusted from
8:1 to 1:1 or from 1:1 to 8:1 in 13 1/2-step
increments. The background flash operates
independently, and can be set for flash expo-
sure compensation of +/-3 stops in 1/2-step
increments for dramatic effects. Proof your
shots and adjust them instantly with a digital
preview on the color LCD monitor.
