Notes on Color Printing The method by which color data is transmitted to the printer depends on the application software you are using. Therefore, in order to achieve the desired output result, you should take care to select the right setting in the printer driver for the application software you are using. Application and Color Model Types 4 Special Print Options From the point of view of PostScript color printing, the application software can be divided into two categories.
Color Printing from a PostScript Application With some printer driver settings, some PostScript applications may fail to recognize the Canon PS printer driver as a PostScript printer driver. If this happens, print data is output via GDI (Graphics Device Interface) using the RGB-based color model, as with an Office application. The settings which yield such changes during the operation of a PostScript application are described below.
Notes on Selecting the Best Setting for Color Printing Some important parameters which should be considered when changing the [PS Output from Application] settings are shown in the table below. Objective Special Print Options 4 4-54 Setting for [PS Output from Application] Result Reason - You want to use an Auto Office application. -or- You want to use a PostScript application and the color of the printed output is not important.
Supplement for Printers Color Adjustment This section describes the color processing flow within the PostScript controller, and how the settings in the [Quality] sheet - [Profile Settings] dialog box (for printers other than the imagePRESS C1) or [Color] sheet (for the imagePRESS C1) affect color processing. There are several color spaces used by the printer driver and the PostScript application. Below is an explanation of the RGB, CMYK, and Grayscale color spaces.
• If [On] is selected for [Pure Black Text]: When the data is a text object, and that data is plain black (R=G=B=0), it is replaced with K (Black) toner (C=M=Y=0%, K=100%), and then proceeds to Final Processing. Select this setting when you want to print black text included in the document with K toner only. Otherwise, it will proceed to RGB Source Profile Processing. OFF RGB ON Black Text? No Yes Final Processing K Only NOTE • Pure Black Text Processing is only valid for processing text.
NOTE For the Color imageRUNNER C3200, the Pure Black Text Process setting is not available. Only RGB Source Profile processing is performed in this process. ■ Output Profile Processing After RGB Source Profile Processing, Output Profile processing is performed. In this process, a suitable Output Profile is selected according to the settings of [Matching Method] and [Prioritize Printing of Lines and Text]. Final Processing ■ Final Processing.
CMYK When the output color space is set to CMYK in PostScript Applications, output from the application is CMYK. Color processing in the CMYK color space is performed in the following process: Pure Black Text ➞ CMYK Simulation Profile ➞ Output Profile ➞ Final Processing When you select CMYK as the Color Adjustment in the PostScript application, color is processed using the parameters set in Color Adjustment, and processing begins from Output Profile Processing.
■ CYMK Simulation Profile Processing Next, CMYK Simulation Profile processing is performed. If [None] is selected for [CMYK Simulation Profile], CMYK Simulation Profile processing will not be applied and it will proceed to Final Processing. If a setting other than [None] is selected for [CMYK Simulation Profile], the CMYK data will be processed with the set Simulation Profile. Then, Pure Black Text Processing is performed.
■ Final Processing Color processing common to all color spaces is performed last of all. Printer NOTE • [Gradation Smoothing] and [Image Refinement] are settings in the [Detailed Settings] dialog box, displayed by clicking [Detailed Settings] in the [Quality] sheet. • [Halftones] is a setting in the [Quality] sheet.
NOTE • Pure Black Text Processing is only valid for processing text. It is not applied for text composed of diagrams or images. • Depending on the application and operating system you are using, the description of color processing in this section may not apply. In this case, output results may differ from the description. ■ Grayscale Profile and Output Profile Processing After Pure Black Text Processing, Grayscale Profile processing is performed.

Glossary C Canon Driver Information Assist Service A software module that is specialized in retrieval of information from devices. When you are using a shared printer in the Print Server (Point and Print) environment, it is necessary to install the Canon Driver Information Assist Service in the server PC in order to set up the printer configuration automatically or to use the Job Accounting feature.
N NDPS Novell Distributed Print Services. A printing system developed by Novell, for managing printers in a network environment. NetSpot Network management software that enables the setup and management of multiple printers connected to a network from one central location. A network manager can monitor conditions of network printers, ascertain online/offline status, error status, the amount of paper in cassettes, verify information on mounted fonts and other readings.
R RGB Red (R), Green (G), and Blue (B) are the three primary colors of light. RGB is the standard color model used in computer/television monitors, scanners, and digital cameras. RGB is an additive system (colors are added to a black background), typically produced by emitted light. The RGB color model blends varying intensities of red, green, and blue light to create colors throughout the spectrum. A combination of these colors in equal amounts would produce white.
