Before Use Initial Preparations Charging the Battery Pack Before use, charge the battery pack with the included charger. Be sure to charge the battery pack initially, because the camera is not sold with the battery pack charged. Prepare for shooting as follows. Before Use 3 Remove the battery pack. Inserting the Battery Pack and Memory Card zz After unplugging the battery charger, remove the battery pack by pushing it in ( ) and up ( ). • To protect the battery pack and keep it in optimal condition, do not charge it continuously for more than 24 hours. • For battery chargers that use a power cord, do not attach the charger or cord to other objects. Doing so could result in malfunction or damage to the product.

Shooting Display Options Using the FUNC. Menu Press the button to view other information on the screen, or to hide the information. Before Use Shooting with Camera-Determined Settings 3 Compose the shot. zz To zoom in or out quickly, move the zoom lever all the way toward (telephoto) or (wide angle), and to zoom in or out slowly, move it just a little in the desired direction. For fully automatic selection of the optimal settings for specific scenes, simply let the camera determine the subject and shooting conditions.
Before Use zz If [Raise the flash] appears on the screen, move the switch to raise the flash. It will fire when shooting. If you prefer not to use the flash, push it down with your finger, into the camera. Shoot. zz Press the shutter button all the way down. zz As the camera shoots, a shutter sound is played, and in low-light conditions when you have raised the flash, it fires automatically. zz Keep the camera still until the shutter sound ends.
Before Use Still Images Movies Shooting in Hybrid Auto Mode You can make a short movie of the day just by shooting still images. The camera records 2 – 4-second clips of scenes before each shot, which are later combined in a digest movie. 1 Enter [ ] mode. zz Follow step 2 in “Shooting (Smart Auto)” (= 28) and choose [ ]. 2 Compose the shot. zz Follow steps 3 – 4 in “Shooting (Smart Auto)” (= 28) to compose the shot and focus.
Before Use Still Images/Movies Movies • If the camera is turned on while the button is held down, the camera will no longer sound. To activate sounds again, press the button and choose [Mute] on the [3] tab, and then press the buttons to choose [Off]. Still Images • A blinking [ ] icon warns that images are more likely to be blurred by camera shake. In this case, mount the camera on a tripod or take other measures to keep it still.
Before Use Still Images Movies Scene Icons In [ ] and [ ] modes, shooting scenes determined by the camera are indicated by the icon displayed, and corresponding settings are automatically selected for optimal focusing, subject brightness, and color. Depending on the scene, continuous images may be shot (= 33).
Before Use Still Images Continuous Shooting Scenes If you shoot a still image when the following scene icons are displayed, the camera will shoot continuously. If you press the shutter button halfway when one of the icons in the table below is displayed, one of the following icons will be displayed to inform you that the camera will shoot continuous images: [ ], [ ], or [W].
Still Images Movies On-Screen Frames In [ ] mode, a variety of frames are displayed once the camera detects subjects you are aiming the camera at. • A white frame is displayed around the subject (or person’s face) determined by the camera to be the main subject, and gray frames are displayed around other detected faces. Frames follow moving subjects within a certain range to keep them in focus. However, if the camera detects subject movement, only the white frame will remain on the screen.
Before Use • To deactivate digital zoom, choose MENU (= 24) > [4] tab > [Digital Zoom] > [Off]. Still Images Movies Reacquiring Subjects Lost after Zooming (Framing Assist – Seek) If you lose track of a subject while zooming in, you can find it more easily by temporarily zooming out. 1 Look for the lost subject. zz Press and hold the < > button. zz The camera zooms out and displays a white frame around the area previously shown (before you pressed the < > button). 2 Reacquire the subject.
Before Use 3 Choose the face. zz Once faces are detected, [ Still Images Movies Basic Guide Easily Reacquiring Lost Subjects ] is displayed. zz If multiple faces are detected, press the button to switch to the desired subject. zz [ ] is displayed around the face that the camera will continue to display at the same size. 4 Shoot. zz Even after you shoot, [ ] remains around the face displayed at a constant size. zz To cancel constant face size display, press the < > button again.
Before Use Still Images Movies Using the Self-Timer With the self-timer, you can include yourself in group photos or other timed shots. The camera will shoot about 10 seconds after you press the shutter button. 1 Configure the setting. zz Press the
button, choose []] (either press the buttons or turn the <5> dial), and then press the button. zz Once the setting is complete, []] is displayed.
Before Use Still Images Movies Still Images Adding a Date Stamp Customizing the Self-Timer You can specify the delay (0 – 30 seconds) and number of shots (1 – 10). 1 Choose [$]. zz Following step 1 in “Using the Self-Timer” (= 37), choose [$] and press the button immediately. 2 Configure the setting. zz Press the buttons to choose [Delay] or [Shots]. zz Press the buttons or turn the <5> dial to choose a value, and then press the button.
Before Use • Shots taken without adding a date stamp can be printed with one as follows. However, adding a date stamp this way to images that already have one may cause it to be printed twice. - Print using printer functions (= 163) - Use camera DPOF print settings (= 167) to print - Use the software downloaded from the Canon website (= 160) to print Still Images Continuous Shooting In [ ] mode, hold the shutter button all the way down to shoot continuously.
Before Use Using Face ID Registering Face ID Information If you register a person ahead of time, the camera will detect that person’s face, and prioritize focus, brightness, and color for that person when shooting. In [ ] mode, the camera can detect babies and children based on registered birthdays and optimize settings for them when shooting. This function is also useful when searching for a specific registered person among a large number of images (= 93).
Before Use 2 Register face information. zz To register a birthday, on the [Edit Profile] zz Aim the camera so that the face of the person you want to register is inside the gray frame at the center of the screen. zz A white frame on the person’s face indicates that the face is recognized. Make sure a white frame is displayed on the face, and then shoot. zz If the face is not recognized, you cannot register face information.
Before Use 4 Save the settings. Shooting zz Press the buttons or turn the <5> dial to choose [Save], and then press the button. zz After a message is displayed, press the buttons or turn the <5> dial to choose [Yes], and then press the button. 5 Continue registering face information. zz To register up to 4 more points of face information (expressions or angles), repeat step 2. zz Registered faces are more easily recognized if you add a variety of face information.
Before Use • Registered people may not be correctly detected if the captured image or scene differs drastically from the registered face information. • If a registered face is not detected, or not easily detected, overwrite registered information with new face info. Registering face info right before shooting will allow for easier detection of registered faces.
Before Use zz To check face information, choose [Face Info List] (either press the buttons or turn the <5> dial), and then press the button. Press the button on the screen displayed, choose face information to erase by pressing the buttons or turning the <5> dial, and then press the button. After [Erase?] is displayed, choose [OK] (either press the buttons or turn the <5> dial), and then press the button.
Before Use 3 Choose the face info to Erasing Registered Information overwrite. zz Press the buttons or turn the <5> dial to choose the face info to overwrite, and then press the button. You can erase information (face info, names, birthdays) registered to Face ID. However, names recorded in previously shot images will not be erased. 1 Access the [Erase Info] screen. zz Follow step 1 in “Registering Face ID Information” (= 40) and choose [Erase Info]. 4 Register face information.
Before Use Image Customization Features Still Images Changing Image Resolution (Size) Still Images Changing the Aspect Ratio Change the image aspect ratio (ratio of width to height) as follows. Choose from 4 levels of image resolution, as follows. For guidelines on how many shots at each resolution setting can fit on a memory card, see “Number of 4:3 Shots per Memory Card” (= 190). zz Press the button, choose [ ] in the menu, and choose the desired option (= 23).
Before Use Still Images Red-Eye Correction Red-eye that occurs in flash photography can be automatically corrected as follows. 1 Access the [Flash Settings] screen. zz Press the button, choose [Flash Settings] on the [4] tab, and then press the button (= 24). 2 Configure the setting. C zz Choose [Red-Eye Corr.], and then choose [On] (= 25). zz Once the setting is complete, [R] is displayed. zz To restore the original setting, repeat this process but choose [Off].
Changing Movie Image Quality Still Images 4 image quality settings are available. Six still images are recorded for each shot. You can capture multiple still images with effects using camera-determined settings. Before Use Still Images Auto Shooting after Face Detection (Smart Shutter) Auto Shooting after Smile Detection The camera shoots automatically after detecting a smile, even without you pressing the shutter button. • You can also shoot as usual by pressing the shutter button. • The camera can detect smiles more easily when subjects face the camera and open their mouth wide enough so that teeth are visible. • To change the number of shots, press the buttons after choosing [ ] in step 1.
Before Use Still Images Using the Wink Self-Timer Aim the camera at a person and press the shutter button all the way down. Before Use • Movies will take longer to import since the file size is larger than still images. • To disconnect from the camera, turn off the camera. • You can also specify to save all images or only selected images to the computer, and you can change the destination folder. Geotagging Images on the Camera Shooting Remotely GPS data recorded on a smartphone using the dedicated CameraWindow application (= 119) can be added to images on the camera. Images are tagged with information including the latitude, longitude, and elevation. • Before shooting, make sure the date and time and your home time zone are set correctly. (See “Setting the Date and Time” (= 14).) Additionally, in [Time Zone] (= 147), specify any shooting destinations that are in other time zones.

Shooting Troubleshooting If you think there is a problem with the camera, first check the following. If the items below do not solve your problem, contact a Canon Customer Support Help Desk. Power Nothing happens when the power button is pressed. • Confirm that the battery pack is charged (= 12). • Confirm that the battery pack is inserted facing the correct way (= 13). • Confirm that the memory card/battery cover is fully closed (= 14). The battery pack runs out of power quickly.
No AF frames are displayed and the camera does not focus when the shutter button is pressed halfway. • To have AF frames displayed and the camera focus correctly, try composing the shot with higher-contrast subject areas centered before you press the shutter button halfway. Otherwise, try pressing the shutter button halfway repeatedly. Subjects in shots look too dark. Before Use Subjects are affected by red-eye (= 47). • Set [Red-Eye Lamp] to [On] (= 50).
Subjects look distorted. • Subjects that pass in front of the camera quickly may look distorted. This is not a malfunction. Playback Playback is not possible. • Image or movie playback may not be possible if a computer is used to rename files or alter the folder structure. Refer to "Software Instruction Manual" (= 160) for details on folder structure and file names. Playback stops, or audio skips. • Switch to a memory card that you have performed low-level formatting on with the camera (= 150).
Cannot send images. • The destination device has insufficient storage space. Increase the storage space on the destination device and resend the images. • The write-protect tab of the memory card in the destination camera is set to the locked position. Slide the write-protect tab to the unlocked position. Cannot resize images for sending. • Images cannot be resized to be bigger than the resolution setting of their original size. • Movies cannot be resized. Images take a long time to send.
Cannot magnify!/Cannot play back this content in Smart Shuffle/ Cannot rotate/Cannot modify image/Cannot modify/Cannot assign to category/Unselectable image./No identification information • The following functions may be unavailable for images that were renamed or already edited on a computer, or images shot with another camera.
