Raise the ash and set it to [ ] or

Record the ash output level.
Aim the camera at the subject to shoot
with the exposure locked. With the
shutter button pressed halfway, press the
button.
The ash res, a circle is displayed
showing the metering range, and [
] is
displayed, indicating that the ash output
level has been retained.

Compose the shot and shoot.

Just as with regular exposure compensation (

52), you can adjust the
ash exposure from –2 to +2 stops, in 1/3-stop increments.
Congure the setting by choosing
[
] menu (

23) > [Flash settings] >
[Flash exposure compensation].
The correction level you specied is now
displayed.
When there is a risk of overexposure, the camera automatically
adjusts the shutter speed or aperture value for ash shots to
reduce washed-out highlights and shoot at optimal exposure.
However, you can deactivate automatic adjustment of the shutter
speed and aperture value by choosing [
] menu (
=
23) >
[Flash settings] > [Safety FE] > [Off].
