Easy Setup Instructions Preparing the Printer 1 Place the printer on a flat surface. * Important * During printing, part of the sheet is ejected from the back of the printer. Leave 12cm (4.7in) or more clear space at the back of the printer. 2 3 Plug the power cord into the back of the printer and connect the other end to a power outlet. • Never attempt to plug the Power Cord into the power outlet or unplug the Power Cord when your hands are wet.

Installing the Print Head 1 Slide the Cover Open Switch toward the right to open the Cover. The Print Head Holder moves to the center. 2 Press the Lock button, then raise the Lock Lever.

There might be some transparent or light blue ink on the inside of the bag the Print Head comes in, or the inside of the protective cap this has no effect on print quality. Be careful not to get ink on yourself when handling these items. Print Head Nozzles Notes • Do not touch the Print Head Nozzles.
Easy Setup Instructions Installing an Ink Tank • For safety reasons, store an Ink Tank out of the reach of small children. • Do not drop or shake an Ink Tank as this may cause the ink to leak out and stain your clothes and hands. 1 Unpack a new Ink Tank and remove the orange protective cap. Turning On the Printer Follow the procedure below to turn on the printer. 1 2 Plug the Power Cord into the back of the printer and connect the other end to a power outlet. Press POWER to turn the printer on. The POWER lamp flashes then changes to steady (non-flashing). The menu screen appears on the LCD.

Note Before unplugging the power cord, turn off the printer and ensure that the lamp has gone out. Using a Memory Card Let's take a look at different types of memory cards and how to insert and remove them.
Preparation When Using the Printer Important • This printer supports images taken with a camera compatible with the Design rules for Camera File system, CIFF, Exif2.21 or earlier, JFIF, TIFF (Exif2.21 compliant) and DPOF (Ver. 1.00 compliant). • Photos stored in a memory card not supported by the digital camera may fail in loading or be damaged. For types of memory cards supported by the digital camera, refer to your digital camera user’s manual. • Use the digital camera to format a memory card.
Preparation When Using the Printer Inserting a Memory Card This printer is equipped with two Card Slots to meet various types of memory cards. Refer to the illustration below to find the Card Slot corresponds to your memory card. Check the card face and insert it gently until it reaches the bottom and the Indicator lamp turns on. The card’s end protrudes from the Card Slot even if it is correctly set. Important Insert only a single type of memory card.
Preparation When Using the Printer Removing a Memory Card Note 1 If you use the printer connected to your computer, follow the instructions for removal of the memory card from the computer. For the procedure, refer to the User’s Guide. Ensure that the Indicator lamp is not flashing, then remove the memory card. Hold the exposed portion of the memory card with your fingers to remove the memory card.

(2) Open the Paper Support. 2 Flatten the four corners of the paper before loading it. Note 3 If paper is curled, gently bend the corners in the opposite direction until the paper becomes completely flat. See “Curled paper used” on page 80. Prepare to load paper.

You can print your favorite photos one by one, or display a list of the photos and specify the number of copies to print for each photo listed. Note If you leave the printer more than five minutes without using any button on the operation panel, the LCD goes into sleep mode automatically. Press the OK button to turn on the LCD again.

Note The watch icon may appear when importing photos from a memory card. 3 Select the photo to print. (1) Using the W X buttons, select the image to print. (2) Press the Print button. The print confirmation screen is displayed.

You can display the photos that are shot within the specified date. • If you select Select date range (1) Use the W X buttons to select the earliest shooting date to search and then press the OK button. (2) Use the W X buttons to select the latest shooting date to search and then press the OK button.

Note 1 2 Please trim the photo after specifying Page size, Media type, and Borderless/Bordered on each settings screen. If you change the settings after trimming the photo, the trimmed selection will be lost. Select the photo to trim. Use the W X buttons to select the photo. Set the Trimming Mode. Press the Trimming button on the operation panel.

Notes • To print without a frame, press the OK button without pressing anything else. • If the photo is upside-down, you can use the ST buttons to rotate the photo 180 degrees and adjust the frame up or down for printing. • If you want to rotate a photo 90 degrees to match a frame, adjust the size of the trimming area. See “Printing a Specified Area—Trimming” on page 34. 6 (2) Press the OK button.

Wait until the colors of the sample photo settle, then select the number of the hue that you like. (1) Use the STW X buttons to select the number of the hue that you like. (2) Press the OK button. Connect the PictBridge compliant device to the printer. Note Depending on the model or brand of your device, you may have to select a mode of printing photos compliant with PictBridge before connecting the device.
Printing Photographs Directly from a Digital Camera Confirming or Changing the Device Settings To change the paper size or paper type, operate the device to select the PictBridge print setup mode and confirm or change the settings. The settings below can be changed by pressing the Settings button when the device is connected.

If you select an image which has had the shooting date embedded in it using a camera with print mode, select Off for this function. If you select Date, File No., or Both, the date or file number will be printed over the embedded date. Notes • Never disconnect the USB cable during printing.

If the optional Bluetooth unit BU-20 is connected to the printer, you can also print photos through Bluetooth communication.

Note The printer cannot print data from a PC via a Bluetooth communication. Requirements for Bluetooth Communication The following requirements must be met when printing via a Bluetooth communication.

Disable any anti-virus programs. Do NOT turn the printer on at this stage. Place the Setup Software & User’s Guide CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. Notes 5 • If the installer in the CD-ROM does not run automatically, click Start and select My Computer, then double-click the CD-ROM icon.

Follow the on-screen instructions. Connect your USB cable when the Printer Connection screen appears. (1) Connect one end of a USB cable to the computer, the other to the printer. (2) Turn the printer on. As the installation proceeds, the “Print Head Alignment Recommended” screen appears.

For more information, refer to the attached leaflet. 10 When the “Installation completed successfully” window appears, click Exit. If the screen shows check box for restarting your system, you can restart the system instead of just exiting the program. To restart the system, ensure that the check box is selected and then click Restart.

Note To install the User’s Guide in the other language than the installed one, double-click the Manual folder in Setup Software & User’s Guide CD-ROM, Canon folder, and then copy a language folder to your hard disk. 6 When the “Authenticate” screen appears, enter your administrator name and password. Click OK.

Printing Maintenance Printing Maintenance When Printing Becomes Faint or Colors are Incorrect When printing becomes faint or colors are incorrect, even if ink remains in the Ink Tanks, the Print Head Nozzles are probably clogged. Follow the procedures below to clean the nozzles. Step 1 “Printing the Nozzle Check Pattern” on page 66 After Print Head Cleaning, print the nozzle check pattern. If the pattern is printed normally, select All A. If the print quality is poor, perform Print Head Cleaning.

Printing Maintenance Replacing an Ink Tank When replacing an Ink Tank, check the model number very carefully. The printer will not print properly if the wrong Ink Tank is used. • Ink Tank: BCI-16 Color Replacing an Ink Tank When an Ink Tank runs out of ink, replace it using the following steps. 1 2 Ensure that the printer is on. Open the Cover. (1) Slide the Cover Open Switch toward the right to open the Cover. The Print Head Holder moves to the center. 3 Remove the empty Ink Tank.
Printing Maintenance 4 Prepare a replacement Ink Tank. (1) Unpack a new Ink Tank and remove the orange protective cap. Dispose of the protective cap. Important • Do not reattach the protective cap once you have removed it. • Once the protective cap is removed, do not touch the open ink port. 5 Insert the Ink Tank. (1) Set a new Ink Tank with it slightly slanted aligning the X mark with the W mark. (2) Push down on the on the Ink Tank until it clicks into place. 6 Close the Cover.
Printing Maintenance Resetting the Ink Counter When an Ink Tank is replaced, the ink counter must be reset. The low ink warning is only displayed properly if the ink counter is reset. Message Prompting Confirmation of Ink Tank Replacement If an Ink Tank is removed, the printer will output a message prompting you to confirm replacement of the Ink Tank at the start of the next print job. When an Ink Tank has been replaced, follow the procedure below to reset the ink counter.
Printing Maintenance Low Ink Warning Display The '!' shows a low ink level in the Ink Tank. A new Ink Tank should be prepared. How to Display Low Ink Warning Correctly • Reset the ink counter every time you install a new Ink Tank. The ink counter cannot work correctly unless you synchronize it with the actual ink level. The ink counter can only be adjusted when it is reset at the time a new Ink Tank is installed. • Do not reset the ink counter of an Ink Tank in use.
