Any standard 35mm film cartridge will fit the Model V. Slide the Rewind Knob Release Lever (24) in the direction shown by the arrow. The film Rewind Knob (23) will spring up part way. draw it up fully to facilitate turning. To open the camera, press down on the Lock for Hinged Back (34) and the camera will swing open.
Pull the film cartridge to the recess directly beneath the Rewind Knob. Depress the Film Rewind Knob (23) again to lock the film cartridge in place. Be sure the dull (emulsion) side of the film faces the lens. With your thumb on the knurled lower end of the Take-Up Spool (36), turn the spool clockwise half a turn until the film is taut. (Be sure the index line of the Film Rewind Ring (2) points to the “A” position.) The camera back will lock shut automatically when you close it.
< Q U < a: cQ The Film Frame Dial (3) on the Model V shows you the number of frames you have not yet exposed. It should be set at the number corre sponding to the number of exposures possible on the film you have just loaded (normally 20 or 36). To do this rotate the Film Frame Dial Setting Wheel (30) until the correct number appears on the dial. Note that only even numbers are engraved. Intermedi ate dots represent the odd numbers.
Film Type Indicator As a reminder, set the Film Type Indicator (28) to the ASA speed of the film you are using, and to show whether you are using black-and-white or color. (Blue dot can indicate day light, red can indicate tungsten.) This indicator is adjusted by twisting the top of the Film Winding Knob (1) with your finger.
Setting Shutter Speed This may be done before or after cock ing shutter. There are two speed dials on the Canon V The High Speed Dial (9) is for shutter speeds of 1/30, 1/60, 1/125, 1/250, 1/500 and 1/1000 of a second. Also “B” (Bulb) and “X” (electronic flash contact). The Slow Speed Dial (10) is for shutter speeds of 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1 second, plus “T” (Time Exposure).
Slow Speed Dial Set the High Shutter Speed Dial to 1/30 sec. Rotate the Slow Shutter Speed Dial until the speed you want is on top, oppo site the indicator line. To take a picture at 1/30 sec. both Speed Dials should be set at 1/30 sec. Exposures Longer Than 1 Second Set the High Shutter Speed Dial to “B” and Slow Shutter Speed Dial to 1/30. The shutter will remain open from the time you press the Shutter Release Button (4) until you release it again.
SETTING LENS APERTURE (F: STOP) Set the Lens Aperture Scale (17) by turning the milled ring at the end of your lens until the required f:stop is opposite the index dot. For correct aperture opening, consult an exposure data card or use a reliable exposure meter. Lens aperture1.2 14 Relative exposure time .36 1.5 .56 l.g .8 (3.
On the Canon Model V, focusing and composing can be done at the same time. When you look through the Range-Viewfinder Eyepiece (13), you will see two images. By releasing the Lens Focusing Lever ( I I ) and rotating the lens barrel, the two images of the object you are focusing upon will coincide. At this point of coincidence your camera is in focus for the object you are about to photograph. For a larger image on which to focus, use Viewfinder Dial (16) set at “RF”.
UJ LiU_ O X I- CL UJ Q 16 The Depth-of-Field Scale (21) shows you the range of objects which will also be in focus on the film. This range will vary with the f;stop you have chosen. The larger the lens aperture, the smaller will be your depth of focus. For example: with an f:stop of f:4 and with the object you have focused on at 25 ft. (*) your camera will give you a sharp focus picture from approximately 18 feet away from the camera to 40 feet.
Adjustment of the Viewfinder Dial (15) is made by turning the Viewfinder Selector (16). Position “35” shows you the view which any Canon 35mm lens will record. Position “50” gives you what any Canon 50mm lens will record. You can focus the Rangefinder at any of the three positions. VIEWFINDER DIAL & SELECTOR For long focal length lenses (i.e. greater than 50mm) or when a larger image is desired for focus ing, set the selector at “RF”.
On the Lens Depth of Field Scale (21) of some Canon Lenses is the letter “R”. This is for infrared film. When using this type of film, focus in the normal way. Read off the distance of the object you are photographing as shown opposite the Distance Indicator Mark on the Lens Distance Scale (19). Turn the lens barrel until the distance read off is opposite the “R” mark. Your lens is now focused for infrared photography. Be sure you always use a proper filter for infrared photog raphy.
You have now completed the following steps: 1. Wound your shutter, ready for your first exposure 2. Set both speed dials 3. Adjusted the Lens Aperture Dial 4. Focused your lens 5. Composed your picture through the cor rect Viewfinder setting You are now ready to expose your picture. Hold the camera in a vertical or horizontal posi tion, firmly but gently. The camera should be cradled in both palms and the index finger of your right hand should rest over the Shutter Release Button.
o z Q z 20 The Canon V features the fastest built-in Rapid Wind mechanism which winds the film to the next exposure and which also recocks the shutter. At the same time it advances the Film Frame Dial to the next number. Pull out the Rapid Wind Trigger (25) from its bed in the camera base plate and extend it to a vertical position. Pull the trigger the f u l l length of its run. The trigger will auto matically return to its original vertical posi tion when released.
For copying stand work, etc. the Manual Film Winding Knob (1) is used instead of the Rapid Wind mechanism. Align the three engraved black dots on the top of the Manual Film Winding Knob and rai.se this Knob to facilitate control. Turn the knob clockwise until it locks into position. Your film has then been advanced one frame, the shutter has been rewound and the Film Frame Dial set to the next number. Keep the Rapid Wind Trigger in its bed.
DOUBLE EXPOSURE PROCEDURE 22
An accidental Double Exposure is impossi ble on the Canon V. For deliberate Double Exposures, the following procedure should be adopted: 1. Turn the Film Rewind Ring (2) from its normal “A” position to the Film Rewind Mark ( ^ ). 2. Rotate High Shutter Speed Dial coun ter-clockwise, without lifting dial until you hear a click and the Dial will turn no further. 3. Hold the High Shutter Speed Dial, fully wound, with your left hand.
UNLOADING 1. Turn the Film Rewind Ring (2) from “A” to the Film Rewind Mark ( * ). 2. Slide the Rewind Knob Release Lever (24) in the direction shown by the arrow.
up into position. Pull it out to its fullest extent. 3. Turn the Film Rewind Knob in a clock wise direction until all the film has been wound back into its original cartridge. Tension on the Film Rewind Knob will cease as soon as this has been done and the Film Transport Indicator (6) will also stop rotating. As long as Film Transport Indicator rotates clockwise, film is being rewound in the camera. One complete turn indicates one frame rewound. 4.

Set the Flash Synchronization Lever to show BB for: F Bulbs for speeds from 1/30—1 sec. Electronic Flash (shutter speed 1/50 sec.) NOTE: 1. For Electronic Flash, turn High Shutter Speed Dial, as shown, to “X.” Slow Shutter Speed Dial should be set at 1/30 sec. 2. When using “F” type bulbs, be sure high shutter speed is at 1/30-1.
Electrical contact is made for flash bulbs when the Canon Flash Unit Model V is attached to the Flash U n i t Connector Socket (31). No external wiring is necessary and all synchroniza tion is done automatically in the camera itself. To connect an electronic flash unit use a standard Prontor-type connecting tip.
DU UJ H- Lu bJ (/) 26 A built-in Self Timer (26) is incorporated in the Model V camera. When you are ready to take your picture, turn the Self Timer Lever counter-clockwise until it turns no further. This can be done before or after cocking the shutter. The timing device will begin working as soon as you release the lever. (You will hear a buzz.) The shutter will be actuated approximately 10 seconds later. Note: Once you have cocked the Self Timer it cannot be released until the shutter has moved.
All Canon Cameras and Lenses feature standard flanges and threads. The screw-in lens mount has been proven the most accurate and durable, with the greatest area of lens-to-camera contact of any type of camera connection. To change your lens, place the Lens Cap over the top of the lens. Grip the lens barrel at its base and apply gentle pressure until the lens is loose. Continue turning until the lens is completely unscrewed.
