vii About This Book This book describes the capabilities of the Pam PC, provides an overview of the software, and describes how to set up communications with your desktop computer. The device itself is described in a separate manual, because it is designed by different manufacturers, and capabilities may vary among models. Palm PC Basics With the Palm PC, you can quickly record and access your personal and business information while on the road. ¢ Chapter 2, “Tutorial.” for a quick hands-on experience entering information into your Palm PC. + Chapter 3, “Palm PC Programs,” for an introduction to each of the software programs.

s se e recognition, First select the input method you want to use in your Palm PC’s input panel. Tap the Input Method arrow to see your choices, which may vary by manufacturer. Type with the keyboard To type, tap the Input Method arrow and select Keyboard, Then tap the keys with your stylus. Characters are displayed as you = |To tap them You can adjust keyboard settings to suit the way you work. Tap Start, Settings, and then Input Panel.
e Tip Drag your stylus across the panel horizontally from right to left to delete a character. Drag from left to right to type a space. As you type or write, your Palm PC anticipates the word you are writing and displays it above the input panel. When you tap the displayed word, it is inserted into your text at the insertion point. The more you use your Palm PC, the more words it learns to anticipate.
e Customize Your Palm PC You can adjust Pam PC settings to suit the way you work. Tap Start and then Settings. The list of settings may vary by manufacturer. Chapter 2 Tutorial The quickstep way o see how easy it is to use your Palm PC is to just try it out. Walk through the following procedures, either entering your own information or using the sample data shown in the pictures. It will take about 15 minutes to complete the tutorial. Press and hold the Voice Recorder program button. (The location and appearance of the buttons labeled here vary by manufacturer.) You'll hear a beep when it's ready to record. Install Windows CE Services Follow the installation procedures in the order given here to install Windows CE Services, connect your device 1o your desktop computer.

S In this window, you can: + Select your Pam PC to use Windows CE Services features such as changing synchronization options, as described in Chapter 8. « Open the Explorer window by double-clicking your Palm PC icon in the Mobile Devices window. You can use this window, which is the root window to your device, to copy and move files between your desktop computer and your Palm PC, as described in Chapter €.
Chapter 5 Synchronization You can synchronize information between your Palm PC and your desktop computer to make sure both computers have the latest information. First you'll need to install Windows CE Services on your desktop computer, as described in Chapter Synchronize: + Files. « Contacts, appointments, tasks + E-mat messages Channel content +Time and date Synchronization takes place according to the options you chose during Windows CE Services setup, as described in Chapter 4.

After the initial synchronization, you can use infrared instead of a serial cable connection. Synchronization will take place according to the options you've chosen.
e Contacts, Ca lend Data stored in the Pocket Outlook programs on your Palm PC can be synchronized with Scheduled and/or Outlook on your desktop computer. New items entered on one computer are copied to the other during synchronization. When you synchronize, typed notes from your Pam PC are added to your Schedule+ or Outlook data, while handwritten notes and drawings are saved as meta files (pictures) and added to Outlook only.
P e Resolve Synchronization Conflicts Synchronization conflicts scour when a previously synchronized item, such as an appointment or task, has been modified on both the desktop computer and the Pam PC. You resolve conflicts by indicating whether you want to retain the data from the desktop computer or the Palm PC. in the Mobile Devices window, click Tools, then Active Sync Options.
