Engine Speed – Adjust
Start the engine and allow it to reach normal
operating temperature.
Remove the fan cover panel and detach the air
filter and housing to reach the governor. The
maximum speed for this engine is 3730 – 3830
rpm. Turn the adjusting screw (1) clockwise to
increase the engine speed. Turn the adjusting
screw counterclockwise to decrease the engine
speed.
If adjusting the screw does not get the engine
speed within range, see Governor – Adjust.
Engine Valve – Inspect/Replace
Remove the fuel tank, muffler, cover panel, air
filter and housing, carburetor, and governor.
This section will describe a single cylinder head.
Repeat all these steps for the other head and
valve.
Remove valve cover bolts (1), valve cover (2),
and valve cover gasket (3).
Remove spark plug (1). Remove cylinder head
bolts (3), and remove cylinder head (4). Remove
cylinder head gaskets (5) and discard used
gaskets. Remove core plate (6). Remove
locating pins (8) and set aside. Studs (2) and (7)
can remain in the cylinder head for this
procedure.
Remove locking nut (1) and adjusting nut (2).
Remove pin (4), and remove exhaust valve
rocker arm (3). Repeat the process for intake
valve rocker arm (5). Check the rocker arms for
wear. Replace if damaged. Remove pushrods
(6). Inspect the pushrods. Make sure they are
straight and not scored. Check the pushrod ends
for wear. Replace the pushrods if worn or
damaged.
