Walk-Around Inspection
Before starting the engine perform a visual
inspection of the unit. Look for:
• Proper oil level
• Proper fuel level
• Good quality fuel
• Fluid leaks
• Loose clamps
• Loose bolts
• Cracked fuel line
• Loose or frayed wiring
• Built up debris
In addition, make sure that:
• The ground terminal is properly
connected
• The circuit breakers are in off “0” position
• The choke knob is pulled out
• The fuel switch is in the on “I” position
Windings – Test
Field Winding:
Remove bolts and motor cover to access the
carbon brush. Remove the brush by removing the
bolts. Use an Ohmmeter or multimeter to
measure the resistance of the collector rings at
the points shown. The resistance should be
45.0Ω±10% at 25°C. If the resistance is out of
tolerance, clean the collector ring and retest.
Replace the alternator if necessary.
Main Winding:
On the terminal block, use an Ohmmeter or
multimeter to measure the resistance of the main
winding. Place the meter across alternating
current output terminals and measure all. The
resistance should be 0.20Ω±10% at 25°C. If the
resistance is out of tolerance, replace the
alternator. Measure the resistance from each wire
to ground. The resistance should be infinite. If the
resistance is not infinite, replace the alternator.
