ACTIVE LED An ACTIVE LED will be on when data is being transmitted over the LC Duplex optical cables. The LED is not on when there is no data activity. vPOD Each vPOD (4 per MV 4440) contains 1 RAID controller and 10 pre-installed, 2.5-inch disk drives.
MediaVault 4440 User Manual TABLE 5-3. Rear Operations Components of the MV 4440. Component Description Power Module The power module contains two power supplies. If one power supply malfunctions, the two vPODs it powers will not power-up. (The power load for the upper two vPODs is distributed across the upper power supply, and the power load for the lower two vPODs is distributed across the lower power supply). The power modules must be serviced by trained personnel only. Call Ciprico Inc.
Operations MediaVault 4440 User Manual Unit Power-Up Sequence Always power-up the MV 4440 before powering-up the host computer. This allows the disk drive modules, and the data access/data transmission functions of the MV 4440, to be fully operational before the host computer is booted-up and “sees” the MV 4440 activities. LED Power-On Sequence The front panel LEDs of the MV 4440 power-up in the following sequence (per vPOD).
MediaVault 4440 User Manual Operations Mode (RAID Type) Functions The MV 4440 allows you to choose the RAID type at which the unit will operate. In general, if you do not backup your data on a daily basis Ciprico Inc. recommends using the RAID 6 function. TABLE 5-5. Operations MediaVault 4440 User Manual TABLE 5-5. Mode Name Functions Mode* Sector Size Usable Capacity If a Drive Fails... Description and Advantages Uses the highest data rate portions of the disk drives.** RAID 6 @ 4K HD Turbo 4 2048 bytes 40% Data is preserved There is access to 40% of the total capacity with redundancy to protect your data. This mode stripes data across 8 drives, with 2 drives as parity drives for redundancy.
MediaVault 4440 User Manual Operations Changing the Mode Mode selection allows the MV 4440 operator to choose the desired operating mode for the unit. See the mode selection choices at Table 5-5. CAUTION: Changing the mode can cause any existing data to become unreadable or corrupted. Make sure that any data you want to keep is stored elsewhere before you change the mode. CAUTION: Remove or delete any known partitions before changing the mode.
Operations MediaVault 4440 User Manual Mode Change Procedure To change the mode, perform the following. Turn off the computer. 2. Select a mode. 3. Set the mode number at the MODE SELECT switch, located at the rear of the MV 4440. See Figure 5-3. Use a pointed object (such as a pen tip) to press the desired button at the MODE SELECT switch. • Press the upper button to increase the mode number. • Press the lower button to decrease the mode number. 1. Press to change Press to change FIGURE 5-3.
MediaVault 4440 User Manual Operations Changing Modes When Hot-Plugging vPODs In some cases the MV 4440 cannot be power-cycled, and the mode must be changed while the vPOD is hot-plugged. Perform the following procedure. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. MV 4440_Ciprico Inc. Select a mode. Set the mode number with the MODE SELECT switch located on the vPOD. See Figure 5-3. Use a pointed object (such as pen tip) to press the desired button at the MODE SELECT switch. Insert the vPOD into the MV 4440.
Operations MediaVault 4440 User Manual Mode Set Button This is a multi-function button. Mode Set Button Functions Indicator Description Mode Set Button (for Mode changes) Used during the mode change procedure (see page 5-12). Press and hold this switch and apply power to the MV 4440. A double beep confirms the mode change.
MediaVault 4440 User Manual Operations Audible Alarm The MV 4440 sounds an alarm when there is a problem with a drive. Corrective actions should be applied to fix the problem. TABLE 5-7. Description of the Audible Alarms. These beeps is normally associated with a Fibre Channel interface problem. 3 Short and 3 Long Beeps Always turn on the MV 4440 first, then turn on the computer. Ten or less slower beeps indicate a bad drive or an intermittent drive.

Problem Solving MediaVault 4440 User Manual Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) TABLE 7-2. Frequently Asked Questions. What is the proper placement of my MediaVault? The MV 4440 can be operated in a tower configuration only. Whenever possible, do not place the unit near the floor, as it will pick up more dust. What are typical data-rate speeds? The internal data rates per vPOD range anywhere from 500MB/sec to about 606MB/sec. Striping the four vPODs together provides a sustained data rate of 1000MB/s.
MediaVault 4440 User Manual TABLE 7-2. Frequently Problem Solving Asked Questions. What is RAID 6? As in RAID 5, RAID 6 staggers its parity information across multiple drives. Its major difference, however, is that it writes two parity blocks for every stripe of data, which means that the array is capable of remaining accessible to the users even after having sustained two simultaneous drive failures.
Problem Solving TABLE 7-2. Frequently MediaVault 4440 User Manual Asked Questions. What is journaling and should I use it? Journaling is where the computer (in the background), logs all disk transactions, such as file open, file write, file read, file close. In the event of volume corruption, this journal is easy for recovery programs to find on the disk and make repairs, based on this file. We recommend journaling (if your OS supports it), in case of such corruption.

APPENDIX E Fabric Switch Zoning In this chapter… Fabric Switch Zoning ........................................................................................ E-2 Background Information ................................................................................ E-2 Fabric Switch Zoning Techniques ................................................................. E-2 SAN Software Examples............................................................................... E-4 MV 4440_Ciprico Inc.
MediaVault 4440 User Manual Fabric Switch Zoning IMPORTANT: The techniques and examples described in this appendix are for information only. Many different zone and port configurations are possible, and not all configurations have been validated and/or verified for use with the MV 4440 unit. Background Information If an array or multiple arrays and multiple computers are attached to a fibre channel switch, by default the switch acts as a hub, relaying information from all ports to all other ports.
MediaVault 4440 User Manual Example 1 Here is a basic example, with a dual-channel computer and MV 4440 with four vPODs: Channels 1 and 2 of the computer are attached to ports 1 and 2 of the switch. The four channels of the array are attached to ports 3 and 4, 5, and 6 of the switch. The switch is ten-port. By default, without zoning, the computer sees two copies of each vPOD on each of the two channels. Each channel of the array sees two copies of the computer.
MediaVault 4440 User Manual 1:1 Relational Create eight zones: • Zone 1 contains ports 1 and 5 • Zone 2 contains ports 2 and 6 • Zone 3 contains ports 1 and 7 • Zone 4 contains ports 2 and 8 • Zone 5 contains ports 3 and 5 • Zone 6 contains ports 4 and 6 • Zone 7 contains ports 3 and 7 • Zone 8 contains ports 4 and 8 In the Plain and Simple configuration, the setting works, though occasionally one channel of the array might test the corresponding channel of the other array and/or the other computer, causin
MediaVault 4440 User Manual SAN software can perform more complex functions, such as giving users different access to different parts of the arrays, or limiting bandwidth. SAN software typically requires a client program/license be installed on each client. However, if the number of clients becomes too great, it is recommended that a dedicated server also be used to manage the flow of the data.
