Configurable Modules
Warni n g
Blank faceplates and cover panels serve thr ee important funct ions: they prevent exposur e to
hazardous voltages and cur rents i nside the chas sis; the y cont ain e lectrom agnetic i nterfe rence (EMI)
that might disrupt other equipme nt; and th ey dir ect t he flow of cooling air throug h the chas sis. D o not
operate the system unless all cards, faceplates, front covers, and rear covers are in place.

Installing S witching Modules
Warni n g
Invisible laser radia tion may be emitt ed from disconnect ed fibers or connec tors. Do not sta re into
beams or view directly with optical instruments.
Statement 1051
Warni n g
Voltages that present a shock haza rd may exist on Power over Ethernet (PoE) circuit s if
interconnections are made using uninsu lated exposed me tal contacts, con ductors, or terminals.
Avoid using such interconnec tion methods , unless the expos ed metal parts ar e located withi n a
restricted access locat ion a nd us ers and servic e peopl e wh o are au thori zed wit hin th e res tricted
access location are made aware of t he hazar d. A restr icted access area ca n be acces sed only throug h
the use of a special tool, lock and key or other means of secu rity.
Statement 1072
Caution To prevent ESD damage, handle switching modules by the carrier edges only.
To install a switching module in a Catalyst 4900M series switch, perform the following steps:
Step 1 Take the necessary precautions to prevent ESD damage as described in Appendix B and in Chapter 2.
Step 2 Choose a slot for the new switching module. Ens ure that you have enough cleara nce to accommodate
any interface equipment that you will c onnect dire ctly to the switching modu le ports.
Step 3 Loosen the captive installation screws that secure the switching-module filler plate (or the existing
switching module) to the desired sl ot.
Step 4 Remove the switching-module filler plate (or the existing switching module). Save the switching-module
filler plate for future use. If you are removing an existing switching module, see the “Removi ng
Switching Modules” section on pa ge 3-15.
Step 5 To install the new switching module, grasp the switc hing-module front pa nel with one hand, and place
your other hand under the c arrier to suppor t the switc hing module , as shown in Figure 3-11. Do no t touch
the printed circu it boards or c onnector pins.
Step 6 Align the edges of the circuit board with the slot guides on the sides of the switch chassis, as shown in
Figure 3-11.
