Installation Guide
Step 4: Loosen the two set screws on the spring winding cone while firmly holding the lower winding bar and making
sure that the lower winding bar is against the back of the door. When set screws are loose, full spring tension will be
on the lower winding bar. See Illus. 3 & Illus. 4.
Illus. 3 Illus. 4
Step 5: Push up on the upper winding bar slightly and remove the lower winding bar while holding tight on the upper
winding bar. Allow the spring and upper winding bar to slowly rotate downward so that the upper bar rests against the
back of the door. This decreases the tension on the spring in ¼ turn increments.
Step 6: Repeat this process of inserting a winding bar fully in the upper hole position, push up slightly, and removing
the lower winding bar and letting the tension slowly rotate the winding bar until it rests against the back of the door.
Repeat this process until all tension is removed from the torsion spring. There should be no tension on the cables and
the shaft should rotate freely.
Step 7: Replacement spring(s) must be identical in wire diameter, coil inside diameter, overall length and/ or be
matched for the door height (# of turns) and door springing weight. Reference “INSTRUCTIONS FOR MEASURING A
TORSION SPRING” below. Remove the torsion drum on the broken spring side by unhooking the torsion cable from
the drum slot, loosening the set screws and sliding the drum towards the door center away from the end bearing plate.
Remove the end bearing plate and remove the bolts holding the spring(s) to the center bearing plate. Slide the drum
and the spring(s) off the end of the torsion shaft. Inspect the spring anchor pad to insure it is firmly attached to
the garage wall, is not rotted, fasteners are loose or missing and is free of cracks and splits. Failure to
securely attach the spring anchor pad could allow the springs to violently pull away from the garage wall and
could result in severe injury and/ or property damage. In no case should nails be used. File off any burrs on the
shaft left by set screws. NOTE: left hand wind spring goes on the right hand side of the center bearing bracket as
viewed from the inside of the garage (right hand wind spring goes to the left) for standard radius doors. Slide the new
spring(s) and the proper drum (drum set screws toward the center of the door) onto the shaft with the spring anchor
cone to the center of the door. Slide the end bearing plate onto the shaft and bolt into place. Bolt the spring(s) to the
center bearing plate.
