Installation Guide

Step 8: Start on one side of the door, make sure the stop end of the cable is firmly placed into the slot of the cable
drum and the drum is against the end bearing plate. (Illus. 5). Tighten the drum set screw (3/4 to 1 full turn after they
have made contact with the shaft), if they are loose, and rotate the drum to tighten the cable being careful that the
cable remains in the groove on the drum. Place locking pliers on the shaft positioned against the door header to keep
the cable tight (Illus. 6). Install the cable into the other drum, turning the drum to tighten the cable, push the drum
against the end bearing plate and tighten the drum set screws to the shaft (3/4 to 1 full turn after they have made
contact with the shaft). Both cable drum slots must be in relatively the same position and cables should have equal
tension to maintain equal lifting force on the cables to assure even door operation and prevent the cable coming loose
during door opening.

Step 9: DO NOT
work directly in front of the spring winding cones. The winding bars MUST always be inserted the
full depth of the holes in the winding cone and supported (be prepared to handle a large force and stand to
the side) make sure winding bars are always fully inserted into the hole in the spring winding cone. Check
for a straight line drawn along the length of the spring(s). The stenciled description can be used as a straight line, if
no line is present, draw one using a piece of chalk. This line will be utilized to indicate the number of turns on the
spring(s). After inserting the one winding bar all the way into the holes in the spring winding cone, while firmly
holding on to the winding bar, lift up on the winding bar. Place the other winding into the spring cone winding hole
below the first winding bar, remove the first winding bar and lift up on the second winding bar. Repeat this
procedure, adding tension to the spring in 1/4 turn increments, until the proper number of turns have been put on
the spring (Illus. 2 & Illus 7). Reference Chart 1for the approximate number of turns for a given door height. While
keeping spring tension on the winding bar (tension can be kept on winding bar by placing a bar in a bottom hole of
the spring cone and rotating the top bar down, allowing the bottom bar to rest against the door, holding the spring
tension), tighten both set screws in the spring winding cone against the shaft (3/4 to 1 full turn after they have made
contact with the shaft). When both set screws have been tightened against the shaft), the winding bars can then be
removed. Tension will now be on the cables. If there is a second spring, repeat the process to wind the second
spring. Remove the locking pliers on the shaft. Unlock the door and lift by hand. The door should lift easily and stop
about midway in the opening. If the door is hard to open and falls quickly or if the door quickly flies open, the
spring(s) need to be adjusted – reference step 10.
