device: A Control4 component, for example, a piece of hardware (controller, touch screen, and so on) 
that requires a device driver. 
Device Control: A virtual view of the actual controls on a device; for example, a Security System's 
control panel. 
DHCP: Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol. A protocol used between a network client and a DHCP 
server (usually a router or access point) that dynamically assigns IP addresses from a pre-defined list 
of clients on a network. 
Dimmer: A lighting device that lets you dim a light. 
Director: Every Control4 Controller ships with pre-installed Director software embedded in the device. 
The Director communicates with Control4 and third-party products to enable all devices to participate 
in the Control4 system. Director runs the Control4 devices. 
DNS: Domain Name Server. A server that translates domain names into IP addresses. 
Door Station: A Control4 device that lets you talk to the occupants inside a structure from outside 
(Door Station – Exterior) or inside a multiple-dwelling building (Door Station – Interior).

FLAC format: A free, open source lossless audio codec format that supports tagging, cover art and 
fast seeks. The audio is compressed with no loss in quality. Control4 supports this format.

Home-Automation System: A line of Control4 home-automation products that communicate with 
each other over Ethernet, WiFi, or ZigBee for a total home-automation experience. 
I 
Icon: A graphical and symbolic representation of an object or device, for example, the icons that 
appear on the Navigator’s Home page (Watch, Listen, Comfort, etc.). 
identified: When a device is added to the Control4 system it must be identified to the network; the 
controller can then communicate with it and other devices in the network. 
Intercom: A two-way communication system using audio and video (if supported) among touch 
screens in the Control4 system. 
interface: See User Interface. 
IP: Internet Protocol. 
IR: Infrared. A device controlled by a wireless remote control device. 
iTunes: An Internet music service provided by Apple Computer.

LED: Lighted Electronic Display. 
Lighting Scene: A type of scene created in Composer Pro or Composer HE where several lights can 
be programmed to create a 'scene' or 'mood,' for example, a 'Party' scene. 
List Navigator: A Navigator type that uses a list rather than a graphics interface in its window. The 
System Remote Control SR-250 uses a list view. 
M 
Media Dashboard: A dashboard that appears at the bottom of a graphical or on-screen Navigator 
used to control audio or video devices and displays the current song or movie title. 
Media Scene: A type of scene that can be created for media. 
Media Zone: The means by which you play music in rooms that have supported audio or video 
devices. Also known as ‘zones.’
