Check Engine Oil
Checkoil levelbeforeeachoperation.Besureoil levelismaintained.
1. Checkthe oil withthe enginestoppedand level.
2. Removethe oil fill dipstickandwipeitclean.
3. Insertandtightendipstick.Removeitto checkthe oillevel.
4. Ifthe oil levelisnearor belowthe lowerlimitmarkonthe dipstick,
removethe oil fillercap/dipstick,andfill withthe recommendedoil
to the upperlimitmark.Do not overfill.
5. Reinstallthe oilfill dipstick.
Change Engine Oil
Gasolineand itsvaporsareextremelyflammableandexplosive.
Fireor explosioncancausesevereburnsor death.
Changeengineoil afterthefirst fivehoursof operation,andeveryfifty
hoursoronce a seasonthereafter.
lWhen drainthe oil fromthe oil fill thefuel tankmustbe
you top
tube,
emptyor fuel canleak outand resultinafire or explosion.Toempty
the fuel tank, runthe engineuntilitstopsfromlackof fuel.
1. Withengineoff butstillwarm,disconnectthe sparkplugwireand
keepit awayfromthe sparkplug.
2. Placea suitablecontainernextto the engineto catchthe usedoil.
3. Removethe oil fill dipstickanddraintheoil intothecontainerby
tippingtheenginetowardtheoil fillerneck.See Figure14.
Usedoilisa hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
IDonot discardwithhouseholdwaste.Checkwithyourlocalauthori-
_tiesor SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recyclingfacilities.
4. Withthe engineina levelposition,fill to the upperlimitmarkon
thedipstickwiththe recommendedoil.

5. Reinstallthe oilfill dipsticksecurely.
Clean Engine
Dailyor beforeeveryuse,cleangrass,chaffor accumulated
debrisfromengine.Keeplinkage,spring,andcontrolsclean.
Keepareaaroundandbehindmufflerfreeofany combustible
debris.
Keepingenginecleanallowsairmovementaroundengine.
Enginepartsshouldbe keptcleanto reducethe riskof overheat-
ingandignitionof accumulateddebris.
Do not usewaterto cleanengineparts.Watercouldcontaminatefuel
system.Usea brushor dry cloth.

LUBRICATION
Blade Control
Lubricatepivotpointsonthe bladecontrolat leastoncea seasonwith
light oil.Thiscontrolmustoperatefreelyinbothdirections.SeeFigure
15.
Wheels
Lubricatethe wheelsat leastoncea seasonwithlight oil (ormotoroil).
Ifwheelsare removedfor any reason,lubricatethe axle boltandinner
surfaceof the wheelwithlightoil. SeeFigure15.
Grass Catcher Adapter
Lubricatethe torsionspringand pivotpointon eachendof the grass
catcheradapterdoorat leastonce a seasonwith lightoil to prevent
rust.SeeFigure15.
Transmission
The transmissionis pre-lubricatedandsealedat thefactoryanddoes
not requirelubrication.
