THEIGNITERSYSTEMconsistsof a gascollector,electrode,wire andigniter(sideburners
includea secondelectrodewithwire). Gas accumulatingin thegas collectoris ignitedby an
electricsparkgeneratedwhenthe igniterunitis activated. The sparkgapis automaticallyset
whenthe electrodeis installed. Theigniterwireshouldbe kepta minimumof 3" belowthe grill
bottomso that the heatwon'tdamagethe wire.
TESTINGTHE IGNITERSYSTEM:
BE SURE CONTROL KNOB VALVE(S) ARE OFF AND PROCEED AS FOLOWS:
Usinga handmirror,watchthe electrodetip insidethe gas collectorwhile activatingthe igniter.
Toavoida possibleshock,DO NOTtouchthe burneror metalpartson ignitorsystemwhile
performingignitertest. Avisiblesparkshouldjump fromthe electrode. Seethe representative
illustrationin Fig.32. If thereisn'ta spark,checkthe wire connectionsandsee thatthe electrode
isn'tbroken. It is normalfor the wireto fit looselyinsidethe porcelain.Dirt and ruston the
burneror ignitercan preventthe igniterspark. Cleanthemwith a de-greaserorwarmsoapy
wateranddry. Removerustfromelectrodetip andmetalsurfacesby lightlysandingwithan
emeryclothor finegrainsandpaper.
