SpeakerCompare ™ Listening Kit Music Guide Welcome to the new frontier of speaker shopping Since 1974, I’ve worked hard to give our customers all of the tools they need to choose the right gear. The virtual speaker technology that you’re about to experience is the culmination of years of groundbreaking research. It’s an entirely new way to shop for speakers online, and we think it’s our best tool yet. Thank you for choosing to explore this new audio frontier with us, and happy listening.
About our musical selections We’ve carefully chosen a variety of tracks for you to sample. We recommend demoing as many as possible to get a sense of how your selected speakers sound across different genres. We’ve proudly included tracks from Crutchfield employees who’ve contributed to this project by sharing their work and granting copyright permission.
Artist: The Believers Artist: Sokoband Artist: The Vailix Genre: Blues rock Genre: Modern jazz Genre: Heavy metal Track notes: This crisp, snappy, spacious mix really highlights a speaker’s capability to deliver clarity and detail. Track notes: This ensemble piece with piano, sax, bass, and drums is great for analyzing the “meat and potatoes” midrange performance of speakers. Track notes: Massive guitars and bass rock this track, with a dramatic bass sweep about 15 seconds in.
Switching between listening modes Some speakers are more efficient than others. That means one pair of speakers may play louder than another when both are fed the same amount of power. To help you compare, we’ve equipped SpeakerCompare™ with two different listening modes. In “equal power” mode, you’ll hear these differences in volume as they naturally occur between speakers. In “equal volume” mode, we’ve made the volume of each speaker about the same.

DragonFly Black v1.5 – Flight Manual DragonFly Black is a USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC) designed to deliver cleaner, clearer, more naturally beautiful sound from any computer, smartphone, or tablet. DragonFly Black’s unique design allows for playback of any file type regardless of resolution. Natively, DragonFly Black is capable of decoding 24-bit/96kHz data.
DragonFly Black represents the culmination of several new and exciting achievements. Over the better part of three years, AudioQuest and acclaimed engineer Gordon Rankin have been tirelessly developing sophisticated software solutions that have allowed us to implement a new, high-performance class of USB microcontroller. We have chosen to work with Microchip®, a leading provider of microcontroller and analog semiconductors.
Additionally, DragonFly Black is software upgradable. Our collaboration with Gordon Rankin and Microchip has now resulted in products that allow consumers to download new software if and when it ever becomes necessary. While we can’t reliably predict any necessary software changes, AudioQuest feels that it is important to provide longterm support for our customers and their investments in audio. Finally, we simply cannot overstate the significance of Gordon Rankin’s contributions to AudioQuest.

Great news: Android devices that run Jelly Bean operating system (4.1 or newer) now support USB audio output, and your DragonFly Black or Red is pre-loaded with the latest firmware (1.03), which includes being optimized for use with Android devices. If your Dragon Fly seem s to have clearly too little output, then there's more to do: Despite Android's support of USB audio output, there are still hardware manufacturers that do not completely adhere to the USB audio class specification.
For Apple iOS Users To connect DragonFly Black or DragonFly Red to any Apple iOS device, w e highly recommend Apple's Lightning-to-USS 3 Camera Adaptor. This d evice sounds better and is more reliable in this application than Apple's slightly less expensive Lightning-to-USS 2.0 Camera Adaptor, while it also adds the ability to charge your iOS device during playback.
