FAQ

FEATURES/PERFORMANCE
Question: What makes MegaLite lightweight?
Answer: We have replaced the silica sand typically found in mortars with an expanded glass alternative. The
expanded glass has exceptional strength and improves the workability of the product.
Question: How does MegaLite qualify for LEED?
Answer: With manufacturing facilities across the nation, your project will most likely be within 500 miles of one of our
manufacturing plants. Cement based mortars do not contain solvents and are considered to have zero
emissions. The expanded glass is a recycled material obtained from post-consumer recycled glass
containers. Using MegaLite in your tile installation can contribute towards achieving LEED in three areas.
Question: How does MegaLite contribute to environmental responsibility?
Answer: MegaLite is part of CUSTOM’s Emerald System and meets the requirements established by all North
American environmental agencies. Also, to help offset the greenhouse gases released during the
manufacturing of the Portland cement used in the product, CUSTOM purchases carbon offset credits that
reduce environmental impact.
INSTALLATION/STANDARDS
Question: Can I install large format tile with MegaLite?
Answer: Yes, MegaLite meets the requirements of both ANSI and TCNA for installing large format tile, which is
defined as those with one edge greater than 15" long. MegaLite may be used with thicknesses from 3/32"
to 3/4" to help achieve 95% coverage with even the largest tiles in use today.
Question: Can MegaLite be used for exterior installations?
Answer: Yes, MegaLite will hold up to the rigors of fluctuating wet and dry conditions, temperature changes and
freeze/thaw cycles. A high polymer content helps to compensate for these changes in the environment.
Question: Does MegaLite replace the need for crack isolation membranes?
Answer: MegaLite can be used to install tiles directly to concrete slabs that have hairline cracks up to 1/8" wide. For
maximum protection, and for use on concrete floors above ground level, CUSTOM recommends the use of
one of our crack isolation membranes.
Question: Can MegaLite be used to install resin-backed, fiber-reinforced stone and tile?
Answer: MegaLite has very high polymer content and in some instances it can be used to install resin-backed tile
and stone. This must be verified by CUSTOM’s application lab before the tile is installed. Contact the
CUSTOM Technical Services department for details.
