D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Safety Instructions Use the following safety guidelines to ensure your own personal safety and to help protect your system from potential damage. Throughout this safety section, the caution icon ( ) is used to indicate cautions and precautions that you need to review and follow. Safety Cautions To reduce the risk of bodily injury, electrical shock, fire, and damage to the equipment, observe the following precautions. Observe and follow service markings.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Safety Instructions (continued) • Use only approved power cable(s). If you have not been provided with a power cable for your system or for any AC-powered option intended for your system, purchase a power cable that is approved for use in your country. The power cable must be rated for the product and for the voltage and current marked on the product's electrical ratings label.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Safety Instructions (continued) Always load the rack from the bottom up, and load the heaviest item in the rack first. Make sure that the rack is level and stable before extending a component from the rack. Use caution when pressing the component rail release latches and sliding a component into or out of a rack; the slide rails can pinch your fingers.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch SECTION 1 Introduction Ethernet Technology Switch Description Features Ports Front-Panel Components Ethernet Technology Fast Ethernet Technology The growing importance of LANs and the increasing complexity of desktop computing applications are fueling the need for high performance networks. A number of high-speed LAN technologies are proposed to provide greater bandwidth and improve client/server response times.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch with any other segments (ports). This allows the total network capacity to be multiplied, while still maintaining the same network cabling and adapter cards. For Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet networks, a switch is an effective way of eliminating problems of chaining hubs beyond the “two-repeater limit.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Front-Panel Components The front panel of the Switch consists of LED indicators, 8(10/100/1000 Mbps) Ethernet ports. Figure 1-1. Front Panel View of the switch Comprehensive LED indicators display the status of the switch and the network. LED Indicators The LED indicators of the Switch include Power, 100/1000Mbps and Link/Act. The following shows the LED indicators for the Switch along with an explanation of each indicator. Figure 1-1.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch The Cable Diagnostic first scans the eight Ethernet ports to determine if the Ethernet cable is in good working order. This process is indicated by the Speed LED blinking green for each of the eight ports − sequentially. The initial port scan takes about 10 seconds. If a cable fault is detected, it is indicated by the corresponding port’s Speed LED glowing amber for 5 seconds − after the initial port scan. The Switch is then reset for normal operation.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Rear Panel Description DC Power Jack: Power is supplied through an external AC power adapter. Check the technical specification section for information about the AC power input voltage. Figure 1-2. Rear panel view of the Switch 1000BASE-T Ports: Eight (8) Gigabit Ethernet, Auto-Negotiating ports (10/100/1000Mbps) Comprehensive LED indicators display the conditions of the Switch and status of the network.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch SECTION 2 Installation Package Contents Before You Connect to the Network Installing the Switch Power On Package Contents Open the shipping carton of the Switch and carefully unpack its contents. The carton should contain the following items: • • • • • 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Mounting the Switch on a Wall The DGS-1008D can also be mounted on a wall. Two mounting slots are provided on the bottom of the switch for this purpose. Please make sure that the front panel is exposed in order to view the LEDs. Please refer to the illustration below: A.) Mounting on a cement wall 1. Mount the Nylon screw anchors into a cement wall. 2. 3. Drive the T3 x 15L screws into the Nylon screw anchors.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Provide for Adequate Ventilation CAUTION: Do not place any device on top of Switch, or place the Switch on top of any device or object that will block the free flow of air through the ventilation slots on the sides, top, and bottom of the Switch’s case. In addition, care should be taken not to locate the Switch next to, on top of, or underneath any device that generates a significant amount of heat.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Section 3 Connecting The Switch Switch To End Node Switch To Hub or Switch Connecting To a Server NOTE: All 8 high-performance NWay Ethernet ports can support both MDI-II and MDI-X connections. Switch To End Node End nodes include PCs outfitted with a 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps RJ-45 Ethernet/Fast Ethernet Network Interface Card (NIC) and most routers. An end node can be connected to the Switch via a twisted-pair Category 3, 4, or 5 UTP/STP cable.
D-Link DGS-1008D Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet Switch Switch to Hub or Switch These connections can be accomplished in a number of ways using a normal cable • A 10BASE-T hub or switch can be connected to the Switch via a twisted-pair Category 3, 4, 5, or 5e UTP/STP cable. • A 100BASE-TX hub or switch can be connected to the Switch via a twisted -pair Category 5 UTP/STP cable. • A 1000BASE-T switch can be connected to the Switch via a twisted -pair Category 5e UTP/STP cable. Figure 3-2.
