Introduction About this instruction manual This instruction manual is split into sections for each of the different operating modes of your Roberts Sound 70 Digital Sound System. The introduction describes the features and controls of the product. Remote handset battery replacement Introduction 1. Remove the battery cover on the front of your remote control by pushing the battery door in and downwards. 2. Insert 2 x AAA size batteries into the compartment. Make sure the (+) and the (-) ends of the batteries are positioned as shown inside the compartment. Close the battery cover. 3. If the remote is not to be used for an extended period of time it is recommended that the batteries are removed.
Connecting loudspeakers The loudspeakers should be connected using the cables supplied as shown. The two loudspeakers are identical. One loudspeaker should be placed in front of and to the left of the normal listening position, and the other in front and to the right. It is important for good bass reproduction and stereo location that both speakers are wired in the same phase with respect to the amplifier outputs. This can be done as follows.

Using the sound system for the first time 1. Place your sound system on a flat surface and connect the loudspeakers to your sound system (see page 9). 2. Fully extend the wire aerial located on the rear of your sound system. The wire should be fully extended and positioned for optimum reception. L USB AUX IN 3. Plug the mains lead into the mains socket located on the back of your sound system ensuring that the plug is pushed fully into the socket. 4.
DAB Radio Operating your sound system - DAB 1. Fully extend the wire aerial. 2. If your sound system is in standby mode, press the On / Off button to switch it on. 2 3. Press and release the Function button until the DAB mode is selected. The display will show 'DAB' and then 'Tuning' for a few seconds. 4. If this is the first time the sound system is used a quick scan of UK Band III DAB channels may be carried out (depending on whether scanning was already completed in standby mode).
Selecting a station - DAB 1. The display shows the name of the station currently selected. 2 2. Press the Tuning Up or Down buttons to scroll through the list of available stations. Stop pressing the Tuning buttons when you find the station that you wish to hear. 2 3. Press and release the Select button to select the station. The display may show 'TUNING' while your radio finds the new station. 4. Adjust the Volume to the required settings.
DAB Radio Finding new stations - DAB As time passes new stations may become available. To find new stations proceed as follows:1. Ensure your radio is in DAB mode. 2. Press and release the Auto button or the Select button (on the remote control). 3 2 2 To find new stations (using the sound system), press and release the rotary control. 4. Your radio will perform a scan of the band III DAB channels.
Display options - DAB When in DAB mode your radio has a range of display options. 1. Press and release the Display button (on the remote control) or press and release the Menu / Info button (on the sound system) to cycle through the various options. a. Station name Displays the station name for the currently tuned DAB station. 1 a 1 b b. Scrolling text Displays scrolling text messages such as artist/track name, phone in number, etc. c c. Programme type Displays type of station being listened to e.g.
DAB Radio Display modes - DAB cont. e. Channel & frequency Displays channel number and frequency for the currently tuned DAB station. e f. Bit rate Displays the digital bit rate for the currently tuned DAB station. f g. Signal error Displays signal error for the currently tuned DAB station. The lower the number the better the DAB signal.
Manual Tuning - DAB Manual tuning allows you to tune your radio to a particular DAB frequency in Band III. Any new stations found will be added to the station list. This function can also be used to assist the positioning of the aerial or the sound system to optimise reception for a specific channel or frequency. Note that UK DAB stations are located in the range of channels 11B to 12D. 1 1. Press and release the Menu button (on the remote control) or press and hold the Menu button (on the sound system).
DAB Radio Dynamic Range Control (DRC) - DAB The DRC facility can make quieter sounds easier to hear when your radio is used in a noisy environment. There are three levels of compression: DRC 0 2 No compression applied. (default) DRC 1/2 Medium compression applied. DRC 1 Maximum compression applied. 3 1. Operating your sound system - Search tuning FM 1. Fully extend the wire aerial located on the rear of your sound system. Place the wire antenna so that it is as straight as possible extending either above or below the sound system. 2 2. Press and release the Function button until the FM mode is selected. 4 4. Repeatedly press and release the Tuning Up or Down buttons to tune to a station. The frequency will change in steps of 50kHz.
Display options - FM Your sound system has a range of display options for FM mode:The Radio Data System (RDS) is a system in which inaudible digital information is transmitted in addition to the normal FM radio programme. RDS offers several useful features. The following are available on your sound system. 1. Press and release the Display button (on the remote control) or press and release the Menu / Info button (on the sound system) to cycle through the various options. a.
FM Radio Stereo / Mono setting - FM Your radio will play stereo FM broadcasts in stereo provided that the received signal is of adequate strength. However, as a stereo signal becomes weaker the audio signal will become poorer. It may be preferable to force the radio to play the station in mono in order to reduce the level of background hiss. 1 1. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on your sound system. 2. Tune to the required FM radio station as previously described (see pages 19, 20). 3.
Presetting stations using the remote control - DAB and FM You may store your preferred DAB and FM radio stations to the preset station memories. There are 20 memory presets in your radio, 10 for DAB and 10 for FM. Presets are remembered by your sound system in the event of a power failure. 1 The procedure for setting presets and using them to tune stations is the same for FM and DAB modes, and is described below. 1. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on the sound system. 2 2.

Press the Function button to select the desired waveband DAB or FM. 1 3. Tune to the required station as previously described. 4. Press and release the Program button. The display will show, for example, 'EMPTY 1' if no station has been stored to that preset. 2 5.
Recalling a preset station using the remote control 1. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on the sound system. 2. Press the Function button to select the desired waveband DAB or FM. 1 3. Momentarily press and release the required Preset button. The display will show, for example, 'EMPTY 1' if no station has been stored to that preset. If a preset has been stored, then the display will show either the station name (for DAB stations) or the frequency (for FM stations). 4.
FM Radio Recalling a preset station using the sound system 1. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on the sound system. 2. Press the Function button to select the desired waveband DAB or FM. 3. Press and release the Program button. The display will show, for example, '1: (Empty)' if no station has been stored to that preset. If a preset has been stored, then the display will show either the station name (for DAB stations) or the frequency (for FM stations). 1 2 4.
Language function - DAB and FM If required, your sound system's radio functions can be configured to a different language. 1. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on your sound system. 2 2. If needed, press the Function button to select the DAB or FM band. 3. Press and release the Menu button (on remote control) or press and hold the Menu button (on the sound system). 3 4. Press the Tuning Up or Down buttons until 'LANGUAGE' shows on the display.
CD / MP3 / WMA Compact discs Use only Digital Audio CDs which have the symbol. Never write on a CD or attach any sticker to the CD. Always hold the CD at the edge and store it in its box after use with the label facing up. To remove dust and dirt, breathe on the CD and wipe it with a soft, lint free cloth in a straight line from the centre towards the edge. Cleaning agents may damage the CD. * Do not expose the CD to rain, moisture, sand or to excessive heat. (e.

MP3 / WMA CD Mode The Sound 70 is able to play CD-R and CD-RW discs containing MP3 or WMA files.
CD / MP3 / WMA Inserting a CD 1. To open the CD compartment, press and release CD Open/Close button in the top right hand corner. 2. Put the CD on the spindle until it clicks into place and then gently close the CD compartment by pushing the cd lid (top right hand corner) back into position. 1 Playing a CD 1. Press the On / Off button to switch on your sound system. 2. Press and release the Function button until the CD mode is selected.
5. To pause playback press the Play / Pause button. The pause symbol will show on the display. Audio CD: The current track number and the elapsed playing time will be shown on the display. MP3 / WMA CD: The current file number and the elapsed playing time will be shown on the display. 5,6 6. To continue playback press the Play / Pause button again. 7. To stop playback, press the Stop button twice.
CD / MP3 / WMA Selecting a track 1. Audio CD: While the CD is playing, press either the Tuning Up or Down buttons to change the desired track (the indicator will flash on the display). You can also skip to a wanted track when the player is in stop mode. Press the Play / Pause button to play the selected track. 2.
CD repeat function 1. Whilst the CD is playing press and release the Intro / Repeat button (on the remote) or the Intro / Repeat / Timer button (on the sound system). The sound system will step through the following options: Audio CD: Repeat 1 , Repeat ALL , MP3 / WMA CD: Repeat 1 , Repeat Folder Repeat ALL , Normal Play 1 Normal Play , 1 2. The display will show the currently selected repeat mode. CD Intro function 1,2 1.
CD / MP3 / WMA Shuffle tracks 1. While the CD is playing, press and release the Prog / Random button (on the remote) or the Prog / Random button (on the sound system) to play all tracks on the CD in random order. 'RANDOM' will appear on the display. The tracks are played in random order until all tracks have been played. 2. Press the Prog / Random button again to return to normal play. 'RANDOM' will disappear from the display.
Playing using the Program Play function 1. If the Stop button is pressed while playing a program then the CD player will stop with the display showing ‘RESUME’. 2. Pressing the Play / Pause button will resume playback of the program. 3. Alternatively, pressing the Stop button a second time will cancel the resume function. Pressing Play / Pause will then play the CD in its entirety without using the stored program. 4.
CD / MP3 / WMA Display options - Audio CD When in Audio CD mode your sound system has a range of display options. 1. Press and release the Display button (on the remote control) or press and release the Menu / Info button (on the sound system) to select the required display option. The display will either show the track information playing or the total tracks on the CD. 1 1 Display options - MP3 / WMA CD When in MP3 / WMA CD mode your sound system has a range of display options. 1 1.
Using SD cards or USB memory devices This section describes how to use your sound system to access and playback your audio files via USB memory devices and Secure Digital (SD, SDHC) cards. Important: Your sound system is only designed to work with USB memory flash memory devices. It is not intended to be connected to hard disk drives or any other type of USB device.
SD / USB Using SD cards or USB memory devices cont. 3. Press the On / Off button to switch on your sound system. 4. To select either SD card or USB mode press the Function button until the desired mode is shown on the display. 5. Playback control, bookmark and program play using an SD card or USB memory device is similar to CD MP3/WMA mode see page 30-36. MP3 or WMA files are played back in the order that they are written to the media by your computer, except when the shuffle mode is used.
iPod® and iPhone® docking Dock connector for iPod and iPhone Your sound system has an iPod dock facility which allows you to play digital audio files and video soundtracks held on your iPod or iPhone using the sound system's loudspeakers. 2,3 The Sound 70 uses the Universal Dock Connector developed for use with most iPods. Some models of iPod are supplied with Universal Dock Adaptor inserts which ensure correct alignment of the iPod with the electrical connector.
iPod Docking Navigating your iPod 1. Press and release the Menu button (on remote control) or press and release the Menu button (on the sound system) to navigate to higher level menus on your iPod. 1 2. Use the Folder Up or Down buttons or the rotary control (on the sound system) as required to move up and down a menu screen on your iPod. 3. Press the Select button to choose the highlighted on screen menu item.
Search function 1. While the iPod is playing, press and hold the Fast-forward or Rewind buttons. Release the button when the desired part of the item is reached. 1 1 Display modes - iPod When in iPod mode your sound system has a range of display options. 1. Press and release the Display button on the remote control to select the required display option. Alternatively whilst your iPod is playing a track the display options will scroll across the screen. The display options are Title, Artist and Album.
Clock and Alarms Alarms Your sound system has an alarm which can be set to wake you to DAB, FM radio, CD, USB, SD card, iPod or buzzer alarm. The alarm can be set to sound once, daily, on weekdays or at weekends. In the event of a power interruption your sound system has a built in memory chip that will maintain your alarm settings for when the power is restored. Note: The alarms can only be set while the unit is in standby mode.
7. Press the Tuning Up or Down buttons to choose the required alarm option. The alarm can be set to any of the following options: BUZZER DAB FM CD USB SD card iPod - will wake you with a buzzer alarm - will wake you with DAB radio - will wake you with FM radio - will wake you playing a CD - will wake you from USB memory device - will wake you from SD card - will wake you playing your iPod 7-11 7-11 8. Press and release the Select button to confirm the setting.
Clock and Alarms The active buzzer alarm is indicated in the display by the symbol. If the active alarm is set to DAB, FM CD, USB, SD card or iPod option then the symbol will be displayed. Important: If using your iPod or iPhone as the source for the alarm, then be sure to dock your iPod or iPhone. If the iPod or iPhone is not detected a buzzer alarm will sound instead. Similarly if using CD, SD or USB as the source for the alarm, please ensure that suitable media is inserted in the sound system.
To view the alarm settings 1. With your sound system in the standby mode. Press and release the Display button (on the remote) or press and release the Menu / Info button on the sound system to view your alarm settings. 1 1 Controlling alarms in standby When your sound system is in standby, the alarms can be controlled using the Intro / Repeat / Timer button. This avoids the risk of disturbance to someone who is asleep. 1.
Clock and Alarms Snooze function 1. When the alarm sounds, pressing the rotary control (on the sound system) or the Snooze button (on the remote) will silence the alarm for 5 minutes. 'SNOOZE' will show on the display. This sequence can be repeated during the 60 minute alarm period. 2. To cancel the Snooze function, press the On / Off button.
Sleep function Your sound system can be set to turn off after a preset time has elapsed. The sleep setting can be adjusted between 15 and 90 minutes. Ensure the sound system is switched on. 1-6 1. With your sound system switched on, press and release the Sleep button (on the remote control). 2. Repeatedly press the Sleep button to select the desired sleep time. The options are 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes. A further press will cause the sleep timer to be set to 00 which will cancel the sleep function. 3.
Clock and Alarms Nap function The Nap timer facility allows you to set your sound system to wake you after a predetermined interval (up to 2 hours) without needing to set the alarm. The nap timer can only be set when your sound system is in standby mode. 1-6 1. With your sound system in standby mode, press and release the Nap button (on the remote control). 2. Repeatedly press the Nap button to select the desired nap time. The nap timer can be set to between 10 and 120 minutes.
Setting the clock format The clock display used in standby mode and when the sound system is in use can be set to 12 or 24 hour format. The selected format is then also used when setting the alarms. Note: The clock format can only be set while the unit is in standby mode. 1. To set the clock format, press and release the Prog / Random (on the remote) or the Prog / Random / Time button (on the sound system) to display either 12 or 24 hour format. 2.
Clock and Alarms Setting the clock manually Normally your sound system will set its clock automatically using the DAB radio signal. If no DAB signal is available and you need to set the time manually, please follow the procedure shown below. The clock can only be set while the unit is in standby mode. 1 1. With your sound system in standby mode, press and hold the Prog / Random button (on the remote) or press and hold the Prog /Random / Time button on the sound system).
Backlight dimmer control The brightness of the display can be adjusted when the radio is in standby or when the unit is in use. 1. In order to adapt the intensity of the display to suit the ambient room lighting, press the Dimmer button (on the remote) to select the dimmer brightness from High-Mid-Low and an almost off 'night-time' setting.
Audio and Setup Equalizer function The sound on your sound system can be adjusted to suit your personal taste for the material that you are listening to. The Sound 70 has six preset equalizer options. Alternatively, you may set the treble and bass levels to your own preferences. 1 1. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on the sound system. 2. Press and release the Equalizer button until the desired equalizer option is selected. 2 a. Classic b. Pop c. Jazz d. Rock 2 e. UBS (extra bass) f.
Bass control 1. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on the sound system. 2. Press and release the Equalizer button until 'USER' is shown on the display. 1 3. Press and hold the Equalizer button. The current bass setting will show on the display. 4. To adjust the Bass setting press the Tuning Up or Down buttons until the desired level is displayed. 2,3 5. After several seconds the display will exit the equalizer menu.
Audio and Setup Treble control 1. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on the sound system. 2. Press and release the Equalizer button until 'USER' is shown on the display. 1 3. Press and hold the Equalizer button. The current bass setting will show on the display. 4. To access the Treble setting, press and release the Equalizer button again. The current Treble setting will show on the display. 2-4 5.
Mute function When playing your sound system, the Mute button (on the remote) will mute the output from the loudspeakers. 1. Press and release the Mute button to mute the sound output. 2. Press and release the Mute button again or one of the Volume buttons to un-mute the sound output. USB socket for software upgrade In the event that any software update is made available for your sound system, information on how to update your sound system will be made available via our website at http://www.robertsradio.
Audio and Setup Software version The software display cannot be altered and is just for your reference. 1. To view which software version your sound system has ensure your sound system is in DAB or FM mode. 2,5 2. Press and release the Menu button (on remote control) or press and hold the Menu button (on the sound system). 2,5 3. Press the Tuning Up or Down buttons until 'SW VER' appears on the display. Press and release the Select button. 4. The display shows the software version information. 3 5.
System reset If your sound system fails to operate correctly, or some digits on the display are missing or incomplete carry out the following procedure. 2 1. Ensure your sound system is in DAB or FM mode. 2. Press and release the Menu button (on remote control) or press and hold the Menu button (on the sound system). 2 3. Press the Tuning Up or Down buttons until the display shows 'FACTORY'. 4. Press and release the Select button. The display will show 'RESET'. 3 5.
Audio and Setup Auxiliary input socket An Auxiliary Input socket is provided on the rear of your sound system to permit an audio signal to be fed into the unit from an external audio device such as iPod, MP3 or CD player. 1. Use standard phono cables to connect and external audio source (for example, iPod, MP3 or CD player) to AUX IN L and AUX IN R terminals. L USB AUX IN 2. Press and release the On / Off button to switch on the sound system. R 3.
Cautions Do not allow this sound system to be exposed to water, steam or sand. Do not leave your sound system where excessive heat could cause damage. It is recommended that the DAB band is used for radio listening where possible since this may result in better sound quality and freedom from interference than will often be obtained on the FM band. The name plate is located on the rear of your sound system.

Mains supply The Sound 70 will operate from a supply of 100-240V ~ 50/60Hz. The wire coloured BLUE must be connected to the terminal marked N or coloured BLACK. DO NOT cut off the mains plug from this equipment. If the plug fitted is not suitable for the power points in your home or the cable is too short to reach a power point, then obtain an appropriate safety approved extension lead or adaptor. If in doubt consult your dealer.
