Administrator Guide

NOTE: 31-bit subnet masks (/31, or 255.255.255.254), as dened by RFC 3021, are supported. This feature allows you to save
two more IP addresses on point-to-point links than 30-bit masks. The system also supports RFC 3021 with ARP.
Conguration Tasks for IP Addresses
The following describes the tasks associated with IP address conguration.
Conguration tasks for IP addresses includes:
Assigning IP Addresses to an Interface (mandatory)
Conguring Static Routes (optional)
Congure Static Routes for the Management Interface (optional)
For a complete listing of all commands related to IP addressing, refer to the Dell Networking OS Command Line Reference Guide.
Assigning IP Addresses to an Interface
Assign primary and secondary IP addresses to physical or logical (for example, [virtual local area network [VLAN] or port channel)
interfaces to enable IP communication between the system and hosts connected to that interface.
You can assign one primary address and up to 255 secondary IP addresses to each interface.
NOTE: You cannot assign an IP address on a port extender interface and VP-LAG. However, you can assign an IP address to a
VLAN that is associated with a port extender interface or a VP-LAG interface that is a member. The commands that are
applicable on a switchport are only available on the port extender interface.
1 Enter the keyword interface then the type of interface and slot/port information.
CONFIGURATION mode
interface interface
For a loopback interface, enter the keyword loopback then a number from 0 to 16383.
For the Management interface, enter the keyword ManagementEthernet 0/0 . The slot number is 0; the port number is 0.
For a port channel interface, enter the keywords port-channel then a number.
For a 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface, enter the keyword TenGigabitEthernet then the slot/port information.
For a 40-Gigabit Ethernet interface, enter the keyword fortyGigE then the slot/port information.
For a VLAN interface, enter the keyword vlan then a number from 1 to 4094.
2 Enable the interface.
INTERFACE mode
no shutdown
3 Congure a primary IP address and mask on the interface.
INTERFACE mode
ip address ip-address mask [secondary]
ip-address mask: the IP address must be in dotted decimal format (A.B.C.D). The mask must be in slash prex-length format
(/24).
secondary: add the keyword secondary if the IP address is the interface’s backup IP address. You can congure up to eight
secondary IP addresses.
Example the show config Command
To view the conguration, use the show config command in INTERFACE mode or use the show ip interface command in EXEC
privilege mode, as shown in the second example.
Dell(conf-if)#show conf
