Assigning IP Addresses to an Interface
Assign primary and secondary IP addresses to physical or logical (for example, [virtual local area network [VLAN] or port channel)
interfaces to enable IP communication between the system and hosts connected to that interface.
In the system, you can assign one primary address and up to 255 secondary IP addresses to each interface.
1. Enter the keyword interface then the type of interface and slot/port information.
CONFIGURATION mode

• For a Loopback interface, enter the keyword loopback then a number from 0 to 16383.
• For the Management interface on the RPM, enter the keyword ManagementEthernet then the slot/port information.
The slot range is from 0 to 1. The port range is 0/0.
• For a port channel interface, enter the keywords port-channel then a number from 1 to 128.
• For a 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface, enter the keyword TenGigabitEthernet then the slot/port information.
• For a VLAN interface, enter the keyword vlan then a number from 1 to 4094.
• For a 40-Gigabit Ethernet interface, enter the keyword fortyGigE then the slot/port information.
2. Enable the interface.

3. Congure a primary IP address and mask on the interface.

ip address ip-address mask [secondary]
• ip-address mask: the IP address must be in dotted decimal format (A.B.C.D). The mask must be in slash prex-length
format (/24).
• secondary: add the keyword secondary if the IP address is the interface’s backup IP address.

To view the conguration, use the show config command in INTERFACE mode or use the show ip interface command in
EXEC privilege mode, as shown in the second example.
