4 Lift the hard-drive bracket off the hard drive.

2 Slide and remove the memory module from the memory-module slot.

2 Slide the memory module firmly into the slot at an angle, and press the memory module down until it clicks into place. 4 Note the display-cable routing and remove the cable from the routing guides. 1 latch 2 display cable 3 I/O-board cable 4 fan 5 Disconnect the fan cable from the system board. 6 Note the fan-cable routing and remove the cable from the routing guides. 7 Remove the screws that secure the fan to the base frame.
8 30 Lift the fan off the palm rest.

Procedure 1 Place the fan on the palm rest and align the screw holes on the fan with the screw holes on the base frame.

4 Turn the keyboard over and place it on the palm rest.
5 Lift the latches and, using the pull tabs, disconnect the keyboard cable and keyboard-backlight cable from the system board. NOTE: The keyboard-backlight cable is present only if the laptop shipped with a backlit-keyboard.

NOTE: Keyboard-backlight cable is present only on a backlit-keyboard. 1 36 Place the keyboard on a flat and clean surface.
2 Lift the keyboard cable and gently fold the keyboard-backlight cable at the fold line.
3 38 Using the alignment line, gently fold the keyboard cable.

Procedure 1 Remove the screws that secure the base frame to the palm rest. 1 2 40 screws (6) 2 Close the display and turn the computer over.
3 Remove the screws that secure the base frame to the palm rest. 1 screws (9) 2 base frame 4 Using a plastic scribe, pry up the base frame. 5 Lift the base frame slightly from the top edge and slide it upward to release it from the tabs of the palm rest.
6 42 Lift the base frame off the palm rest and slide the display cable and I/Oboard cable through the base frame.

2 Lift the heat sink off the system board.

2 Peel off the coin-cell battery from the system board.

3 Release the speakers from the alignment posts and lift the speakers, along with the speaker cable, off the palm rest.

3 Slide the status-light board cable out through the slot on the palm rest. 1 4 latch 2 status-light board cable Close the display and turn the computer over.
5 Lift the left speaker and move it away from the status-light board. 1 6 58 left speaker Remove the screw that secures the status-light board to the palm rest.
7 Lift the status-light board and peel off the status-light board cable from the palm rest.

2 Lift the latches and disconnect the status-light board cable and touchpad cable from the system board. 1 status-light board cable 2 touchpad cable 3 Close the display panel and turn the computer over. 4 Remove the screws that secure the system board to the palm rest. 5 Disconnect the speaker cable and hard-drive cable from the system board.
6 7 Lift the hard-drive cable away from the computer base. 1 system board 2 screws (2) 3 hard-drive cable 4 speaker cable Carefully lift the system board from the inner edge and release the ports from the slots on the palm rest.
8 64 Turn the system board over.
9 Disconnect the power-adapter port cable from the system board.

Procedure 1 Disconnect the antenna cables from the wireless card. 1 antenna cables (2) 2 wireless card 2 Open the display to an angle of 90 degrees. 3 Place the computer on the edge of the table so that the palm rest is on the table and the display assembly extends past the table edge with the display hinges facing up. 4 Remove the screws that secure the display hinges to the palm rest.
5 70 Lift the display assembly off the palm rest.

5 6 Route the antenna cables avoiding the chip and the white circle. 1 wireless card 2 antenna cables (2) 3 chip 4 white circle Connect the antenna cables to the wireless card. Post-requisites 1 Replace the base frame. 2 Replace the keyboard. 3 Replace the fan. 4 Replace the hard drive. 5 Replace the battery. 6 Replace the base cover.

5 Remove the screws that secure the system board to the palm rest. 1 speaker cable 3 system board 2 screws (2) 6 Carefully lift the system board from the inner edge and release the ports from the slots on the palm rest. 7 Turn the system board over. 1 8 system board Disconnect the power-adapter port cable from the system board.
9 Note the power-adapter port cable routing and lift the power-adapter port, along with its cable, off the palm rest.

Flashing the BIOS You may need to flash (update) the BIOS when an update is available or when you replace the system board. To flash the BIOS: 1 Turn on the computer. 2 Go to dell.com/support. 3 If you have your computer's Service Tag, type your computer's Service Tag and click Submit. If you do not have your computer's Service Tag, click Detect My Product to allow automatic detection of the Service Tag.
