This section provides information about setting up your Inspiron Mini 10 laptop. Before Setting Up Your Computer When positioning your computer, ensure that you allow easy access to a power source, adequate ventilation, and a level surface to place your computer. Restricting airflow around your Inspiron laptop may cause it to overheat. To prevent overheating ensure that you leave at least 10.2 cm (4 inches) at the back of the computer and a minimum of 5.1 cm (2 inches) on all other sides.
Setting Up Your Inspiron™ Laptop Connect the AC Adapter Connect the AC adapter to the computer and then plug it into a wall outlet or surge protector. 6 WARNING: The AC adapter works with electrical outlets worldwide. However, power connectors and power strips vary among countries. Using an incompatible cable or improperly connecting the cable to a power strip or electrical outlet may cause fire or permanent damage to your computer.

Setting Up Your Inspiron™ Laptop Enable or Disable Wireless (Optional) To enable wireless: 1. Turn on your computer. 2. Double-click the tray or press . icon on the system The Wireless Enable/Disable dialog box appears. 3. Select the option(s) you want to enable: ––Enable Bluetooth ––Enable Wireless LAN/WiMax ––Enable Wireless WAN/GPS 4. Click OK. To disable wireless: 1. Setting Up Your Inspiron™ Laptop Ubuntu® Setup Your Dell computer is preconfigured with the Ubuntu operating system if you requested for Ubuntu while ordering your computer. See the Ubuntu Quick Start Guide that shipped with your computer for more operating system specific information. Microsoft® Windows® Setup Your Dell computer is preconfigured with Microsoft Windows operating system if you requested for Windows while ordering your computer.
Setting Up Your Inspiron™ Laptop Setting Up a Wireless Connection Before you can use your wireless Internet connection, you need to connect to your wireless router. To set up your connection to a wireless router: 1. Ensure that wireless is enabled on your computer (see “Enable or Disable Wireless” on page 9). 2. Save and close any open files, and exit any open programs. 3. Click the Start button and then click Connect To. 4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup.
Setting Up Your Inspiron™ Laptop 3. Under Network and Internet, click Connect to the Internet. The Connect to the Internet window appears. 4. Click either Broadband (PPPoE) or Dial-up, depending on how you want to connect: a. Choose Broadband if you will use a DSL, satellite modem, cable TV modem, or Bluetooth® wireless technology connection. b. Chose Dial-up if you will use an optional USB dial-up modem or ISDN.
Setting Up Your Inspiron™ Laptop ––If you have already obtained the setup information from your ISP but did not receive a setup CD, click Set up my connection manually. ––If you have a CD, click Use the CD I got from an ISP. 7. Click Next. If you selected Set up my connection manually, continue to step 6. Otherwise, follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup. Set Up the TV Tuner (Availability Varies by Regions) You can set up the TV tuner through PowerCinema.
INSPIRON Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop Your Inspiron Mini 10 has indicators and buttons that provide information and enable you to perform common tasks. The connectors on your computer provide the option of attaching additional devices.
Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop 1 Audio out/Headphone connector – Connects to a pair of headphones, or sends audio to a powered speaker or sound system. 2 Audio in/Microphone connector – Connects to a microphone or input signal for use with audio programs. 3 HDMI connector – Connects to a TV for both 5.1 audio and video signals. NOTE: When used with a monitor, only the video signal is read. 4 USB 2.0 connector – Connects to USB devices, such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, external drive, or MP3 player.

Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop 1 Security cable slot – Attaches a commercially available antitheft device to the computer. NOTE: Before you buy an antitheft device, ensure that it works with the security cable slot on your computer. 2 AC adapter connector – Connects to the AC adapter to power on the computer and charge the battery. USB 2.0 connector – Connects to USB devices, such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, external drive, or MP3 player.

Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop 1 Power/Battery indicator light – Turns on steadily or blinks to indicate battery charge status. The light indicates the following states while charging or using the computer with: an AC adapter • Solid white: The computer is on and the battery is charging. • Blinking white: The computer is in a standby mode. • Off: The computer is off and the battery is adequately charged. 2 Keyboard – Settings for this keyboard can be personalized by using the system setting utility.
Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop Touch Pad Gestures Scroll Allows you to scroll through content. The scroll feature includes: Pan – Allows you to move the focus on the selected object when the entire object is not visible. Move two fingers in the desired direction to pan scroll the selected object. Auto Scroll Horizontal – Allows you to scroll left or right on the active window. Move two fingers to your left or right at a fast pace to activate auto scrolling horizontally.
Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop Zoom Rotate Allows you to increase or decrease the magnification of the screen content. The zoom feature includes: Allows you to rotate the active content on the screen. The rotate feature includes: Pinch – Allows you to zoom in or zoom out by moving two fingers apart or bringing them closer together on the touch pad. To zoom in: Move two fingers apart to enlarge the view of the active window.
Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop Setting the Touch Pad Sensitivity The palm tracking feature allows you to set the touch pad sensitivity, and is useful in preventing unwanted pointer movement while typing. To set the touch pad sensitivity: 1. Click Start → Control Panel→ Mouse and select the Elantech tab. 2. Click Options... and in the Elan Smart-Pad window that appears, scroll down and select PalmTracking. 3. Drag the PalmTracking Sensitivity slider to increase or decrease the touch pad sensitivity.
Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop Display Features 1 2 3 4 1 Microphone – Provides quality sound for audio chatting and voice recording. 3 Camera – Built-in camera for video capture, conferencing, and chat. 2 Camera activity light – Indicates if the camera is on or off. 4 Display – Your display can vary based on selections you made when purchasing your computer. For more information about displays, see the Dell Technology Guide.
Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop Removing and Replacing the Battery WARNING: Using an incompatible battery may increase the risk of fire or explosion. This computer should only use a battery purchased from Dell. Do not use batteries from other computers. WARNING: Before removing the battery, shut down the computer, and remove external cables (including the AC adapter).
Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop To remove the battery: 1. Shut down the computer and turn it over. 2. Slide the battery lock latch until it clicks into place. 3. Slide the battery release latch to unlock position. 4. Pull the battery up and out of the battery bay. To replace the battery, slide it into the bay until it clicks into place. Then slide the battery lock latch to the lock position.
Using Your Inspiron™ Laptop Windows XP 1. Right-click an open area of the desktop to access the display properties window. 2. Click Properties, to open the Display Properties window and learn more about your customization options. Customizing Your Energy Settings You can use the power options in your operating system to configure the power settings on your computer.
WARNING: Only trained service personnel should remove the computer cover. See the Service Manual on the Dell Support website at support.dell.com for advanced service instructions. Network Problems Wireless Connections If the wireless network connection is lost The wireless router is offline or wireless has been disabled on the computer. • Check your wireless router to ensure it is powered on and connected to your data source (cable modem or network hub).
Solving Problems The link integrity light on the integrated network connector lets you verify that your connection is working and provides information on the status: • Green — A good connection exists between a 10-Mbps network and the computer. • Orange — A good connection exists between a 100-Mbps network and the computer. • Off — The computer is not detecting a physical connection to the network. NOTE: The link integrity light on the network connector is only for the wired cable connection.
Solving Problems If the power light is blinking amber — A device might be malfunctioning or the battery charge is low. • If the computer is receiving electrical power, then a device might be malfunctioning or incorrectly installed. • If the battery charge is low, connect the computer to the AC adapter. If you encounter interference that hinders reception on your computer — An unwanted signal is creating interference by interrupting or blocking other signals.
Solving Problems Lockups and Software Problems If the computer does not start up — Ensure that the power cable is firmly connected to the computer and to the electrical outlet. If a program stops responding — End the program: 1. Press simultaneously. 2. Click Applications. 3. Click the program that is no longer responding 4. Click End Task. If a program crashes repeatedly — Check the software documentation. If necessary, uninstall and then reinstall the program.
Solving Problems Windows Vista 1. Click Start → Control Panel→ Programs→ Use an older program with this version of Windows.In the welcome screen, click Next. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen. Windows XP 1. Click Start→ All Programs→ Accessories→ Program Compatibility Wizard. 2. In the welcome screen, click Next. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
INSPIRON Using Support Tools NOTE: The instructions in this section are for computers with Windows Vista operating system installed. Dell Support Center The Dell Support Center helps you find the service, support, and system-specific information you need. For more information about Dell Support Center and available support tools, click the Services tab at support.dell.com. Click the icon in the taskbar to run the application.
Using Support Tools System Messages If your computer has an issue or error, it may display a System Message that will help you identify the cause and action needed to resolve the issue. NOTE: If the message you received is not listed in the following examples, see the documentation for either the operating system or the program that was running when the message appeared. Alternatively see the Dell Technology Guide on your hard drive or the Dell Support website at support.dell.com.
Using Support Tools • Enter system setup and ensure that the boot sequence information is correct (see the Dell Technology Guide on your hard disk or the Dell Support website at support.dell.com). No timer tick interrupt — A chip on the system board might be malfunctioning or motherboard failure (see “Contacting Dell” on page 49 for assistance). USB over current error — Disconnect the USB device. Your USB device needs more power for it to function properly.
Using Support Tools Dell Diagnostics If you experience a problem with your computer, perform the checks in “Lockups and Software Problems” on page 30 and run the Dell Diagnostics before you contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 49) for technical assistance. It is recommended that you print these procedures before you begin. NOTE: Dell Diagnostics works only on Dell computers. NOTE: The Drivers and Utilities media is optional and may not ship with your computer.
Using Support Tools 4. Press any key to start the Dell Diagnostics from the diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive. Starting Dell Diagnostics From the Drivers and Utilities Media NOTE: Your computer may or may not have an optical drive. Use an external optical drive or any external storage device for the procedures that involves media. 1. Insert the Drivers and Utilities media. 2. Shut down and restart the computer. When the DELL logo appears, press immediately.
You can restore your operating system in the following ways: • System Restore returns your computer to an earlier operating state without affecting data files. Use System Restore as the first solution for restoring your operating system and preserving data files. • Dell Factory Image Restore returns your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer. This procedure permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any programs installed after you received the computer.
Restoring Your Operating System NOTE: The procedures in this document were written for the Windows default view, so they may not apply if you set your Dell™ computer to the Windows Classic view. Starting System Restore in Windows Vista 1. Click Start . 2. In the Start Search box, type System Restore and press . NOTE: The User Account Control window may appear. If you are an administrator on the computer, click Continue; otherwise, contact your administrator to continue the desired action. 3.
Restoring Your Operating System Undoing the Last System Restore in Windows XP NOTE: Before you undo the last system restore, save and close all open files and exit any open programs. Do not alter, open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete. 1. Click Start→ All Programs→ Accessories→ System Tools→ System Restore. 2. In the welcome screen, click Undo my last restoration and then click Next. 3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Restoring Your Operating System Data files include documents, spreadsheets, e-mail messages, digital photos, music files, and so on. If possible, back up all data before using PC Restore. Using PC Restore: 1. Turn on the computer. During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top of the screen. 2. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press . If you do not press in time, let the computer finish starting, and then restart the computer again.
Restoring Your Operating System Dell Factory Image Restore CAUTION: Using Dell Factory Image Restore permanently deletes all data on the hard drive and removes any programs or drivers installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using this option. Use Dell Factory Image Restore only if System Restore did not resolve your operating system problem. NOTE: Dell Factory Image Restore may not be available in certain countries or on certain computers.
Restoring Your Operating System NOTE: Depending upon your configuration, you may need to select Dell Factory Tools, then Dell Factory Image Restore. 7. Click Next. The Confirm Data Deletion screen appears. NOTE: If you do not want to proceed with Factory Image Restore, click Cancel. 8. Select the checkbox to confirm that you want to continue reformatting the hard drive and restoring the system software to the factory condition, then click Next.
Restoring Your Operating System NOTE: The Dell Drivers and Utilities media contains drivers that were installed during the assembly of the computer. Use the Dell Drivers and Utilities media to load any required drivers. Depending on the region from which you ordered your computer, or whether you requested the media, the Dell Drivers and Utilities media and Operating System media may not ship with your computer. Reinstalling Windows The reinstallation process can take 1 to 2 hours to complete.
INSPIRON Getting Help If you experience a problem with your computer, you can complete the following steps to diagnose and troubleshoot the problem: 1. See “Solving Problems” on page 27 for information and procedures that pertain to the problem your computer is experiencing. 2. See “Dell Diagnostics” on page 35 for procedures on how to run Dell Diagnostics. 3. Fill out the “Diagnostic Checklist” on page 48. 4.
