INSPIRON Setting Up Your Inspiron One This section provides information about setting up your Dell™ Inspiron One computer. WARNING: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, read the safety information that shipped with your computer. For additional safety best practices information, see the Regulatory Compliance Homepage at www.dell.com/regulatory_compliance. NOTE: Your computer’s Service Tag and Express Service Code are located on a label at the back of your computer.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One Connect the Keyboard and Mouse Connect the USB keyboard and mouse to the USB connectors on the computer. NOTE: If you purchased a wireless keyboard and mouse along with your computer, connect the USB receiver to the USB connector. For more information, see the documentation that shipped with the wireless keyboard and mouse.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One Connect the AC Adapter Connect the AC adapter to the computer and then plug it into an electrical outlet or surge protector. WARNING: The AC adapter works with electrical outlets worldwide. However, power connectors and power strips vary among countries. Using an incompatible cable or improperly connecting the cable to a power strip or electrical outlet may cause fire or permanent damage to your computer.

Setting Up Your Inspiron One A network connection is not required to complete this computer setup, but if you have an existing network or Internet connection that uses a cable connection (such as a home cable modem or Ethernet jack), you can connect it now. NOTE: Use only an Ethernet cable (RJ45 connector) to connect to the network connector. Do not plug a telephone cable (RJ11 connector) into the network connector.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One Adjust the Computer Stand WARNING: Do not use the stand to carry the computer or tilt the computer upside down. Pull the stand to adjust the display to a comfortable viewing angle. A distinct click is heard when the stand is opened or closed.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One Set Up the TV Tuner (Optional) You can watch TV on your computer by connecting either a TV/digital antenna cable or a set-top box to your computer. Set Up Using a Set-Top Box 1. Peel the protective cover from the IR transmitter and adhere the IR transmitter to the IR sensor on the set-top box. 2. Connect the IR transmitter cable to the IR blaster connector on your computer.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One 3. Connect the RF cable to the RF-out connector on your set-top box and to the antenna-in connector on your computer. NOTE: The RF cable does not ship with your computer and must be purchased separately.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One 4. Turn on your computer. 5. Click Start → All Programs→ Windows Media Center→ Tasks→ settings→ TV. 6. Follow the instructions on the screen.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One Set Up Using a TV/Digital Antenna Cable 1. If not already inserted, insert the B-CAS card into the B-CAS card slot on your computer (Japan only).
Setting Up Your Inspiron One 2. Connect the TV/digital antenna cable to the antenna-in connector on your computer. 3. Turn on your computer. 4. Click Start → All Programs→ Windows Media Center→ Tasks→ settings→ TV. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Setting Up Your Inspiron One Set Up the Operating System Your Dell computer is preconfigured with the operating system you selected at the time of purchase. Microsoft Windows To set up Microsoft® Windows® for the first time, follow the instructions on the screen. These steps are mandatory and may take some time to complete. The Windows setup screens will take you through several procedures including accepting license agreements, setting preferences, and setting up an Internet connection.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One Create System Recovery Media (Recommended) NOTE: It is recommended that you create a system recovery media as soon as you set up Microsoft Windows. The system recovery media can be used to restore your computer to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer, while preserving data files (without the need of the Operating System disc).
Setting Up Your Inspiron One To create a system recovery media: 1. Ensure that the AC adapter is connected (see “Connect the AC Adapter” on page 7). 2. Insert the disc or USB key in the computer. 3. Click Start → All Programs→ Dell DataSafe Local Backup. 4. Click Create Recovery Media. 5. Follow the instructions on the screen. NOTE: For information on restoring your operating system using the system recovery media, see “System Recovery Media” on page 65.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One Connect to the Internet (Optional) To connect to the Internet, you need an external modem or network connection and an Internet Service Provider (ISP). If an external USB modem or WLAN adapter is not a part of your original order, you can purchase one at www.dell.com. Setting Up a Wired Connection • If you are using a dial-up connection, connect the telephone line to the optional external USB modem and to the telephone wall connector before you set up your Internet connection.
Setting Up Your Inspiron One Setting Up Your Internet Connection To set up your Internet connection: ISPs and ISP offerings vary by country. Contact your ISP for offerings available in your country. 1. Save and close any open files, and exit any open programs. If you cannot connect to the Internet but have successfully connected in the past, the ISP might have a service outage. Contact your ISP to check the service status, or try connecting again later. 2. Click Start Have your ISP information ready.

Enter the security code that appears on your TV. To enable wireless display: 1. Double-click the Intel® Wireless Display icon on the desktop. The Intel Wireless Display window appears. 2. Select Connect to Existing Adapter. NOTE: For more information about wireless display, see the wireless display adapter documentation.

Right View Features 1 2 1 Volume increase button — Press to increase the volume level. 2 Volume decrease button — Press to decrease the volume level. 3 7-in-1 Media Card Reader — Provides a fast and convenient way to view and share digital photos, music, videos, and documents stored on memory cards. 4 USB 2.
Using Your Inspiron One 5 Audio-out/Headphone connector — Connects to a pair of headphones. NOTE: To connect to a powered speaker or sound system, use the line-out connector on the back of your computer. 6 Audio-in/Microphone connector — Connects to a microphone or inputs signal for use with audio programs. 7 Hard drive activity light — Turns on when the computer reads or writes data. A blinking white light indicates hard drive activity.

Using Your Inspiron One 1 Optical drive — Plays or records CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs (optional). For more information, see “Using the Optical Drive” on page 28. 2 Optical drive light — Blinks when you press the optical drive eject button or when you insert a disc and it is being read. 3 Optical drive eject button — Opens the optical drive tray when pressed. 4 Brightness increase button (optional) — Press to increase the brightness level of the display.
Using Your Inspiron One Using the Optical Drive CAUTION: Do not press on the disc tray when you open or close it. Keep the tray closed when you are not using the drive. CAUTION: Do not move the computer while playing or recording a disc. This optical drive plays or records CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs (optional). Ensure that the side with print or writing is facing towards you when placing discs on the optical drive tray. To place a disc in the optical drive: 1. Press the eject button on the optical drive.

Using Your Inspiron One 1 2 3 4 5 USB 2.0 connectors (4) — Connect to USB devices, such as a mouse, keyboard, printer, external drive, or MP3 player. Line-out connector — Connects to a powered speaker or sound system. Network connector — Connects your computer to a network or a broadband device if you are using a wired network. The two lights next to the connector indicate the status and activity for a wired network connection. AC adapter connector — Connects to the AC adapter to power the computer.

Using Your Inspiron One S/PDIF connector (optional) — Connects to amplifiers, speakers, or TVs for digital audio output through optical digital cables. 9 Composite video-in connector (optional) — Connects to the composite video-output connector on your video device such as a DVD player, camcorder, or gaming device. 10 Composite left audio-in connector (optional) — Connects to the composite left audio-output connector on your video device such as a DVD player, camcorder, or gaming device.

Using Your Inspiron One 1 IR receiver (optional) — Detects signals from an IR device such as a Dell TV remote control. 2 Camera — Built-in camera for video capture, conferencing, and chat. 3 Camera activity indicator — Indicates if the camera is on or off. A solid white light indicates camera activity. 4 Microphone — Provides quality sound for video chatting and voice recording. 5 Display — Your display can vary based on selections you made when purchasing your computer.
Using Your Inspiron One Using the Touch Screen (Optional) The touch screen feature on your Dell Inspiron One converts your computer into an interactive display. Dell Stage The Dell Stage software installed on your computer provides access to your favorite media and multi-touch applications. To launch Dell Stage, click Start → All Programs→ Dell Stage→ Dell Stage. NOTE: Some of the applications on Dell Stage can also be launched directly through the All Programs menu.
Using Your Inspiron One • Photo — View, organize, or edit your pictures. You can create slideshows and collections of your pictures and upload them to Facebook or Flickr when connected to the Internet. • StickyNotes — Create notes or reminders using the keyboard or touch screen. These notes will appear on the bulletin board the next time you access STICKYNOTES. You can also save notes on your desktop. • Dell Web — Provides a preview of up to four of your favorite web pages.
Using Your Inspiron One Touch Screen Gestures (Optional) NOTE: Some of the gestures are application-specific and may not work outside the application. Dwell Allows you to access additional information by simulating a right-click. Press and hold a finger on the touch screen, to open context-sensitive menus. Zoom Allows you to increase or decrease the magnification of the screen content. Pinch — Allows you to zoom-in or zoom-out by moving two fingers apart or bringing them closer together on the screen.
Using Your Inspiron One Scroll Allows you to scroll through content. The scroll features include: Scroll Horizontal — Allows you to scroll left or right on the active window. Move a finger to the left or right to activate horizontal scrolling. Pan — Allows you to move the focus on the selected object when the entire object is not visible. Move two fingers in the desired direction to pan scroll the selected object. Scroll Vertical — Allows you to scroll up or scroll down on the active window.
Using Your Inspiron One Software Features FastAccess Facial Recognition Your computer may have the FastAccess facial recognition feature. This feature helps keep your Dell computer secure by learning the unique appearance of your face and uses this to verify your identity to automatically supply login information when you would normally enter this information yourself (such as for logging on to a Windows account or secure websites). For more information, click Start → All Programs → FastAccess.
Using Your Inspiron One Entertainment and Multimedia You can use your computer to watch videos, play games, create your own CDs/DVDs/ Blu-ray Discs (optional), listen to music and internet radio stations. Your optical drive may support multiple disc media formats including CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray Discs (optional). You can download or copy pictures and video files from portable devices, such as digital cameras and cell phones.
Using Your Inspiron One Dell Dock The Dell Dock is a group of icons that provides easy access to frequently-used applications, files, and folders. You can personalize the Dock by: • Adding or removing icons • Changing the color and location of the Dock • Grouping related icons into categories Add a Category • Changing the behavior of the icons Remove a Category or Icon 1. Right-click the Dock, click Add→ Category. The Add/Edit Category window appears. 1.
INSPIRON Solving Problems This section provides troubleshooting information for your computer. If you cannot solve your problem using the following guidelines, see “Using Support Tools” on page 52 or “Contacting Dell” on page 75. WARNING: Only trained service personnel should remove the computer cover. See the Service Manual at support.dell.com/manuals for advanced service instructions.
Solving Problems If the touch screen starts losing its sensitivity — • Calibrate the touch screen (see “Touch Screen Calibration” on page 44). • The touch screen may have foreign particles (such as sticky notes) that are blocking the touch sensors. To remove these particles: a. Turn off the computer. b. Disconnect the power cable from the wall outlet. c.
Solving Problems Beep Codes Your computer might emit a series of beeps during start-up if there are errors or problems. This series of beeps, called a beep code, identifies a problem. If this occurs, write down the beep code and contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 75) for assistance. NOTE: To replace parts, see the Service Manual at support.dell.com/manuals.
Solving Problems Network Problems Wireless Connections If the wireless network connection is lost — The wireless router is offline or wireless has been disabled on the computer. • Check your wireless router to ensure it is powered on and connected to your data source (cable modem or network hub). • Ensure that wireless is enabled on your computer. • Re-establish your connection to the wireless router (see “Setting Up a Wireless Connection” on page 20).
Solving Problems Power Problems If the power light is off — The computer is either turned off or is not receiving power. • Press the power button. The computer resumes normal operation if it is off or in hibernate mode. • Reseat the AC adapter cable into the power connector on the computer and the electrical outlet. • If the computer is plugged into a power strip, ensure that the power strip is plugged into an electrical outlet and that the power strip is turned on.
Solving Problems If the power light is blinking amber — The computer is in sleep/standby mode or the display may not be responding. • Press a key on the keyboard, move the connected mouse, or press the power button to resume normal operation. • If the display is not responding, press the power button until the computer turns off and then turn it back on. • If the problem persists, contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 75).
Solving Problems Memory Problems If you receive an insufficient memory message — • Save and close any open files and exit any open programs you are not using to see if that resolves the problem. • If the problem persists, contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 75). If you experience other memory problems — • Run Dell Diagnostics (see “Dell Diagnostics” on page 56). • If the problem persists, contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 75).
Solving Problems If a program crashes repeatedly — Check the software documentation. If necessary, uninstall and then reinstall the program. NOTE: Software usually includes installation instructions in its documentation or on the CD. If the computer stops responding or a solid blue screen appears — CAUTION: You might lose data if you are unable to perform an operating system shutdown.
Solving Problems If you have other software problems — • Back up your files immediately. • Use a virus-scanning program to check the hard drive or CDs. • Save and close any open files or programs and shut down your computer through the Start menu. • Check the software documentation or contact the software manufacturer for troubleshooting information: ––Ensure that the program is installed and configured properly. ––Verify that the device drivers do not conflict with the program.
INSPIRON Using Support Tools Dell Support Center The Dell Support Center helps you find the service, support, and system-specific information you need. To launch the application, click the notification area of your desktop. icon in the The Dell Support Center home page displays your computer’s model number, service tag, express service code, and service contact information.
Using Support Tools My Dell Downloads NOTE: My Dell Downloads may not be available in all regions. Some of the software pre-installed on your new Dell computer do not include a backup CD or DVD. This software is available on the My Dell Downloads website. From this website you can download available software for reinstallation or create your own backup media. To register and use My Dell Downloads: 1. Go to DownloadStore.dell.com/media. 2.
Using Support Tools CPU fan failure — CPU fan has failed. Replace the CPU fan (see the Service Manual at support.dell.com/manuals). System fan failure — System fan has failed. Contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 75) for assistance. Hard-disk drive failure — Possible hard-disk drive failure during POST. Contact Dell (see “Contacting Dell” on page 75) for assistance. Hard-disk drive read failure — Possible hard-disk drive failure during HDD boot test.
Using Support Tools USB over current error — Disconnect the USB device. Your USB device needs more power for it to function properly. Use an external power source to connect the USB device, or if your device has two USB cables, connect both of them. CAUTION - Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends that you back up your data regularly. A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem — S.M.A.R.
Using Support Tools Dell Diagnostics If you experience a problem with your computer, perform the checks in “Lockups and Software Problems” on page 49 and run Dell Diagnostics before you contact Dell for technical assistance. It is recommended that you print these procedures before you begin. NOTE: Dell Diagnostics works only on Dell computers. NOTE: The Drivers and Utilities disc may not ship with your computer.
Using Support Tools NOTE: If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft® Windows® desktop; then, shut down your computer and try again. NOTE: If you see a message stating that no diagnostic utility partition has been found, run Dell Diagnostics from the Drivers and Utilities disc. If PSA is invoked: a. The PSA will start running the tests. b.
Using Support Tools NOTE: The Service Tag for your computer is displayed at the top of each test screen. The Service Tag helps you identify your computer when you contact Dell. 6. When the tests are complete, close the test screen to return to the Choose An Option window. 7. To exit Dell Diagnostics and restart the computer, click Exit. Starting Dell Diagnostics From the Drivers and Utilities Disc NOTE: The Drivers and Utilities disc may not ship with your computer. 1.
Using Support Tools 3. When the boot device list appears, highlight CD/DVD/CD-RW and press . 4. Select the Boot from CD-ROM option from the menu that appears and press . 5. Type 1 to start the CD menu and press to proceed. 6. Select Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics from the numbered list. If multiple versions are listed, select the version appropriate for your computer. NOTE: The Service Tag for your computer is displayed at the top of each test screen.
INSPIRON Restoring Your Operating System You can restore the operating system on your computer using any of the following options: CAUTION: Using Dell Factory Image Restore or the Operating System disc to restore your operating system permanently deletes all data files on your computer. If possible, backup your data files before using these options.
Restoring Your Operating System System Restore The Microsoft® Windows® operating systems provide a System Restore option which allows you to return your computer to an earlier operating state (without affecting data files) if changes to the hardware, software, or other system settings have left the computer in an undesirable operating state. Any changes that System Restore makes to your computer are completely reversible. CAUTION: Make regular backups of your data files.
Restoring Your Operating System Undoing the Last System Restore NOTE: Before you undo the last system restore, save and close all open files and exit any open programs. Do not alter, open, or delete any files or programs until the system restoration is complete. 1. Click Start . 2. In the search box, type System Restore and press . 3. Click Undo my last restoration, click Next and follow the instructions on the screen.
Restoring Your Operating System NOTE: If Dell DataSafe Local Backup is not available on your computer, use Dell Factory Image Restore (see “Dell Factory Image Restore” on page 66) to restore your operating system. You can use Dell DataSafe Local Backup to restore your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased your computer, while preserving the data files.
Restoring Your Operating System 5. Select Repair Your Computer. 6. Select Dell DataSafe Restore and Emergency Backup from the System Recovery Options menu and follow the instructions on the screen. NOTE: The restoration process may take an hour or more depending on the size of the data to be restored. NOTE: For more information, see knowledge base article 353560 at support.dell.com.
Restoring Your Operating System System Recovery Media CAUTION: Although the system recovery media is designed to preserve the data files on your computer, it is recommended that you backup your data files before using the system recovery media. You can use the system recovery media, created using Dell DataSafe Local Backup, to return your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer while preserving the data files on your computer.
Restoring Your Operating System Dell Factory Image Restore CAUTION: Using Dell Factory Image Restore to restore your operating system permanently removes any programs or drivers installed after you received your computer. If possible, back up the data before using this option. Use Dell Factory Image Restore only if System Restore did not resolve your operating system problem. NOTE: Dell Factory Image Restore may not be available in certain countries or on certain computers.
Restoring Your Operating System Starting Dell Factory Image Restore 1. Turn on the computer. 2. When the DELL™ logo appears, press several times to access the Advanced Boot Options window. NOTE: If you wait too long and the operating system logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Microsoft Windows desktop; then, shut down your computer and try again. 3. Select Repair Your Computer. The System Recovery Options window appears. 4. Select a keyboard layout and click Next. 5.

You may be asked to type some commands at the keyboard, relay detailed information during operations, or try other troubleshooting steps possible only at the computer itself.
