Stacking
Using the Dell EMC Networking OS stacking feature, you can interconnect multiple switch units with stacking ports . The stack
becomes manageable as a single switch through the stack management unit.
The system accepts Unit ID numbers from 1 to 12 and it supports stacking up to twelve units.

Stacking Overview
Dell EMC Networking OS elects a management (master) unit, a standby unit, and all other units are member units.
Dell EMC Networking OS presents all of the units. For example, to access GigabitEthernet Port 1 on Stack Unit 1, enter
interface tengigabitethernet 1/1 from CONFIGURATION mode.
Cross Platform Stacking
Starting from Dell Networking OS 9.10(0.0), stacking is supported on all the five platforms (S3124, S3124F, S3148, S3124P,
S3148P) in S3100 series. You can stack up to 12 switches using the dedicated stacking ports.
You can stack the switches among all the five platforms. By default, stacking is enabled. The master unit can configure all the
options in the member units.
Important points to remember:
● All the five platforms can be stacked together.
● Only the switches that belong to S3100 series can be stacked. Other devices cannot be stacked with S3100 series switches.
● By default, the PoE commands are enabled. However, you cannot execute any PoE command in a non PoE device. If you try
to execute a PoE command in a non-PoE device, it throws an error.
● You can configure the PoE commands on a PoE supported device when it is connected to a non-PoE device.
● You can provision a slot with any of the five switches in the S3100 series.
● When the slot contains the corresponding card type, all the configurations are synchronized to the slot.
● When there is a mismatch between the card type and the provisioned slot, the card does not come up online and remains in
the type-mismatch state. The configurations from the master are not synchronized.
Stack Management Roles
The stack elects the management units for the stack management.
● Stack master — primary management unit, also called the master unit.
● Standby — secondary management unit.
● Stack units — the remaining units in the stack, also called stack members. The system supports up to twelve stack units.
The master holds the control plane and the other units maintain a local copy of the forwarding databases. From the stack
master you can configure:
● System-level features that apply to all stack members.
