rd
Use the rd command to configure a BGP routing session to advertise VPN-
IPv4 prefixes. Use the no form of this command to delete the VPN-IPv4
configuration.
Syntax
rd route-distinguisher
no rd
route-distinguisher—
A 2-byte or an 8-byte value to be prepended to an IPv4
prefix to create a VPN IPv4 prefix. The RD value can be specified in either of
the following formats:
16-bit AS number: a 32-bit value (Ex: 64496:11)
32-bit IPv4 address: a 16-bit value (Ex: 10.1.1.1:22)
32-bit AS number: a 32-bit value (Ex: 65537:60110)

User Guidelines
An RD creates routing and forwarding table instance and specifies the default
route distinguisher for a VPN. The RD is prepended to IPv4 prefixes to
change them into globally unique VPN-IPv4 prefixes.
An RD is either:
ASN related – Composed of an autonomous system number and an
arbitrary number.
IP address related – Composed of an IP address and an arbitrary number.
