Switch Management Commands 2208
initiate failover
To manually force a failover from the management unit to the backup unit in
a stack, use the initiate failover command in Stack Configuration mode.
The initiate failover command checks for stack port errors and NSF
synchronization prior to initiating failover. If stack port errors are found, or if
the NSF status is not synchronized, a message is displayed and the user is
prompted to continue or abort the operation (see example, below).

User Guidelines
This command forces a warm restart of the stack. The backup unit takes over
as the new management unit without clearing the hardware state on any of
the stack members. The original management unit reboots. If the system is
not ready for a warm restart, for example because no backup unit has been
elected or one or more members of the stack do not support nonstop
forwarding, the command fails with a warning message. Use the standby
command to select a specific unit to act as the backup unit. Use the show nsf
command to check the NSF state. If the switch shows Warm Restart Ready as
Yes, then the master switch state is synchronized with the standby switch.
