Usage 
Information
When you enable failover, BGP keeps track of IP or IPv6 ability to reach the peer remote 
address and the peer local address. Whenever either address becomes unreachable (for 
example, no active route exists in the routing table for the peer IP or IPv6 destination/local 
address), BGP brings down the session with the peer.

Enable graceful restart on a BGP neighbor.

Syntax
neighbor {ip-address | peer-group-name} graceful-restart 
[restart-time seconds] [stale-path-time seconds] [role 
receiver-only]
To return to the default, enter the no bgp graceful-restart command.
Parameters
ip-address
Enter the IP address of the neighbor in dotted decimal format.
peer-group-name
Enter the name of the peer group to apply the filter to all routers in the 
peer group.
restart-time 
seconds
Enter the keyword restart-time then the maximum number of 
seconds to restart and bring-up all the peers. The range is from 1 to 
3600 seconds. The default is 120 seconds.
stale-path-time 
seconds
Enter the keyword stale-path-time then the maximum number 
of seconds to wait before restarting a peer’s stale paths. The default 
is 
360 seconds.
role receiver-only Enter the keyword role receiver-only to designate the local 
router to support graceful restart as a receiver only.

Usage 
Information
This feature advertises to BGP neighbors through a capability advertisement. In Receiver Only 
mode, BGP saves the advertised routes of peers that support this capability when they restart.
