Concept Guide
Enabling a Physical Interface
After determining the type of physical interfaces available, to enable and congure the interfaces, enter INTERFACE mode by using the
interface interface command.
1 Enter the keyword interface then the type of interface and slot/port[/subport] information.
CONFIGURATION mode
interface interface
• For a 10-Gigabit Ethernet interface, enter the keyword TenGigabitEthernet then the slot/port/subport information.
• For a 40-Gigabit Ethernet interface, enter the keyword fortyGigE then the slot/port information.
2 Enable the interface.

no shutdown
To conrm that the interface is enabled, use the show config command in INTERFACE mode. To leave INTERFACE mode, use the
exit command or end command. You cannot delete a physical interface.
Physical Interfaces
The Management Ethernet interface is a single RJ-45 Fast Ethernet port on a switch.
The interface provides dedicated management access to the system.
Stack-unit interfaces support Layer 2 and Layer 3 trac over the and 40-Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. These interfaces can also become
part of virtual interfaces such as virtual local area networks (VLANs) or port channels.
For more information about VLANs, refer to Bulk Conguration. For more information on port channels, refer to Port Channel Interfaces.
Dell EMC Networking OS Behavior: The system uses a single MAC address for all physical interfaces.
Conguration Task List for Physical Interfaces
By default, all interfaces are operationally disabled and trac does not pass through them.
The following section includes information about optional congurations for physical interfaces:
• Overview of Layer Modes
• Conguring Layer 2 (Data Link) Mode
• Conguring Layer 2 (Interface) Mode
• Management Interfaces
• Auto-Negotiation on Ethernet Interfaces
• Adjusting the Keepalive Timer
• Clearing Interface Counters
40G to 1G Breakout Cable Adaptor
As a default conguration, you can see the speed CLI with 10M, 100M and 1000M options for all the front-end interfaces. By default, the
show config command does not display the default speed. If you change the speed to 100 and then to 1000, it is displayed in the show
config output or if you OIR 10G port with speed 1000 with 40G to 1G cable, it displays the default speed.
You can use the speed command only to congure on the management optic ports alone. Without any optic, if you congure the speed,
the conguration is assigned as the port speed to support Provisioning through BMP.
