Specifying the Local System Domain and a List of
Domains
If you enter a partial domain, Dell EMC Networking OS can search dierent domains to nish or fully qualify that partial domain.
A fully qualied domain name (FQDN) is any name that is terminated with a period/dot. Dell EMC Networking OS searches the host table
rst to resolve the partial domain. The host table contains both statically congured and dynamically learnt host and IP addresses. If Dell
EMC Networking OS cannot resolve the domain, it tries the domain name assigned to the local system. If that does not resolve the partial
domain, Dell EMC Networking OS searches the list of domains congured.
To congure a domain name or a list of domain names, use the following commands.
• Enter up to 63 characters to congure one domain name.

ip domain-name name
• Enter up to 63 characters to congure names to complete unqualied host names.
CONFIGURATION mode
ip domain-list name
Congure this command up to six times to specify a list of possible domain names. Dell EMC Networking OS searches the domain
names in the order they were congured until a match is found or the list is exhausted.
Conguring DNS with Traceroute
To congure your switch to perform DNS with traceroute, use the following commands.
• Enable dynamic resolution of host names.

ip domain-lookup
• Specify up to six name servers.
CONFIGURATION mode
ip name-server ip-address [ip-address2 ... ip-address6]
The order you entered the servers determines the order of their use.
• When you enter the traceroute command without specifying an IP address (Extended Traceroute), you are prompted for a
target and source IP address, timeout in seconds (default is
5), a probe count (default is 3), minimum TTL (default is 1), maximum TTL
(default is
30), and port number (default is 33434).
CONFIGURATION mode
traceroute [host | ip-address]
To keep the default setting for these parameters, press the ENTER key.
