Working on Your Computer 1 Before Working Inside Your Computer Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your personal safety. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure included in this document assumes that the following conditions exist: • You have read the safety information that shipped with your computer. • A component can be replaced or--if purchased separately--installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.
3. If the computer is connected to a docking device (docked), undock it. CAUTION: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device. 4. Disconnect all network cables from the computer. 5. Disconnect your computer and all attached devices from their electrical outlets. 6. Close the display and turn the computer upside-down on a flat work surface.

Removing and Installing Components This section provides detailed information on how to remove or install the components from your computer. Removing the Battery 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Slide the release latch outwards to unlock the battery. 3.
Installing the Battery 1. Insert the battery into the battery slot and press to lock in place. 2. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer. Removing the Optical Drive 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration: a. Remove the screw that secures the optical-disk drive (ODD) to the computer [1]. b. Press the tab indicated using a scribe [2]. c.
Installing the Access Panel 1. Insert the access panel into the chassis. 2. Tighten the screw to secure the access panel to the chassis. 3. Install battery. 4. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer. Removing the Hard Drive 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Remove: a. battery b. access panel 3. Removing the Memory Module 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Remove: a. battery b. access panel 3. Pry the securing clips away from the memory module until it pops up. 4. Remove the memory module from its socket on the system board. Installing the Memory Module 1. Insert the memory module into the socket and press to lock the securing clips. 2. Install the access panel. 3. Install the battery. 4. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer.
Installing the WLAN Card 1. Insert the WLAN card into its slot and tighten the screw to secure it to the computer. 2. Connect the two connectors (black cable to the black triangle and white cable to the white triangle). 3. Install: a. access panel b. battery 4. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer. Removing the Coin-Cell Battery 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Remove: a. battery b. access panel 3.
3. Release the keyboard by prying on the keyboard release tabs using a scribe. 4. Slide and lift the keyboard to access the keyboard connector cable underneath [1,2]. 5. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration: a. Lift the tab to release the cable from it’s connector [1]. b. Disconnect the keyboard cable from the system board [2].
Installing the Keyboard 1. Connect the keyboard cable to the connector on the system board. 2. Slide the keyboard into the retention slots. 3. Press along the top edges to lock the keyboard in place. 4. Install the battery. 5. Follow the procedures in After Working Inside Your computer. Removing the Base Cover 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Remove: a. b. c. d. e. f. g. 3.
4. Perform the following steps as shown in the illustration: a. Turn the computer over and remove the screws from the base of the computer [1]. b. Release the tabs that secure the base cover [2]. c. Pry up the base cover and remove it away from the computer [3]. Installing the Base Cover 1. Place the base cover on the chassis and press the notches until it locks in place. 2. Connect the ODD connector to the system board. 3. Tighten the screws to secure the base cover to the palmrest. 4.

Removing the Speakers 1. Follow the procedures in Before Working Inside Your Computer. 2. Disconnect the speaker cables from the system board [1]. b. Installing the Speakers 1. Insert the speakers into the system board and press along the retention clips to lock in place. 2. Connect the speaker cable to the system board. 3. Guide the speaker cable through the tabs. 4. Installing the System Board 1. Install the system board into the chassis. 2. Tighten the screw to secure the system board to the computer. 3. Connect and route the power connector to the system board. 4. Connect the speaker cable to the system board. 5. Connect the LVDS cable to the system board. 6. Installing the Power Connector 1. Insert the power connector into its slot on the system board and guide the cable into the retention tabs. 2. Installing the Display Assembly 1. Align the palmrest assembly to the chassis. 2. System Setup 3 System Setup enables you to manage your computer hardware and specify BIOS‐level options.

Option Description Boot List Option Allows you to change the boot list option. • • Legacy UEFI Advanced Boot Options This option allows you the legacy option ROMs to load. By default, the Enable Legacy Option ROMs is disabled. Date/Time Allows you to change the date and time. Table 3. System Configuration Option Description Integrated NIC Allows you to configure the integrated network controller.
Option Description NOTE: USB keyboard and mouse always work in the BIOS setup irrespective of these settings. Audio This field enables or disables the integrated audio controller. By default, the Enable Audio option is selected. Miscellaneous Devices Allows you to enable or disable the following devices: • • • • Enable Microphone Enable Camera Enable Media Card Disable Media Card NOTE: All devices are enabled by default. Option Description Internal HDD-0 Password Allows you to set, change or delete the password on the system's internal hard-disk drive. NOTE: Successful password changes take effect immediately. Default Setting: Not set Strong Password Allows you to enforce the option to always set strong passwords. Default Setting: Enable Strong Password is not selected.
Option Description Default Setting: The option is disabled. Expert Key Management Allows you to manipulate the security key databases only if the system is in Custom Mode. The Enable Custom Mode option is disabled by default. The options are: • • • • PK KEK db dbx If you enable the Custom Mode, the relevant options for PK, KEK, db, and dbx appear.
Option Description Intel TurboBoost Allows you to enable or disable the Intel TurboBoost mode of the processor. • Enable Intel TurboBoost Default Setting: The option is enabled. Hyper-Thread Control Allows you to enable or disable the HyperThreading in the processor. • • Disabled Enabled Default Setting: The option is enabled. Table 8. Power Management Option Description AC Behavior Allows you to enable or disable the computer from turning on automatically when an AC adapter is connected.
Option Description Primary Battery Charge Configuration Allows you to select the charging mode for the battery. The options are: • • • • Adaptive Standard - Fully charges your battery at a standard rate. Primarily AC use Custom If Custom Charge is selected, you can also configure Custom Charge Start and Custom Charge Stop. NOTE: All charging mode may not be available for all the batteries. To enable this option, disable the Advanced Battery Charge Configuration option. Table 9.
Table 11. Wireless Option Description Wireless Switch Allows to set the wireless devices that can be controlled by the wireless switch. The options are: • WLAN/WiGig • Bluetooth All the options are enabled by default. Wireless Device Enable Allows you to enable or disable the internal wireless devices. • • WLAN/WiGig Bluetooth All the options are enabled by default. Table 12. Maintenance Option Description Service Tag Displays the Service Tag of your computer.
8. On the Drivers and Downloads screen, under the Operating System drop-down list, select BIOS. 9. Identify the latest BIOS file and click Download File. You can also analyze which drivers need an update. To do this for your product, click Analyze System for Updates and follow the instructions on the screen. 10. Select your preferred download method in the Please select your download method below window, click Download File. The File Download window appears. 11.

Diagnostics 4 Enhanced Pre-Boot System Assessment (ePSA) Diagnostics The ePSA diagnostics (also known as system diagnostics) performs a complete check of your hardware. The ePSA is embedded with the BIOS and is launched by the BIOS internally.
