1 Working on your computer Safety instructions Use the following safety guidelines to help protect your computer from potential damage and to help to ensure your personal safety. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure included in this document assumes that the following conditions exist: • You have read the safety information that shipped with your computer. • A component can be replaced or--if purchased separately--installed by performing the removal procedure in reverse order.
Turning off your computer After working inside your computer After you complete any replacement procedure, ensure you connect any external devices, cards, and cables before turning on your computer. CAUTION: To avoid damage to the computer, use only the battery designed for this particular Dell computer. Do not use batteries designed for other Dell computers. 1 Connect any external devices, such as a port replicator or media base, and replace any cards, such as an ExpressCard.

3 Removing and installing components This section provides detailed information on how to remove or install the components from your computer. Installing the WLAN card 1 Insert the WLAN card into the connector at a 45–degree angle. 2 Close the plastic cover over the WLAN card. 3 Tighten the screw to secure the WLAN card to the computer. 4 Connect the antenna cables to the connectors marked on the WLAN card. 5 Install the: a b 6 battery back cover Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer Removing the touchpad 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.

Installing the touch pad 1 Align the touch pad assembly on the computer chassis. 2 Install the screws that secure the touch pad assembly. 3 Place the metal bracket over the touch pad assembly. 4 Install the screws that secure the metal bracket to the touch pad assembly. 5 Connect the touch pad cables to the connectors on the computer. 6 Affix the adhesive tape over the touch pad assembly.

Installing the fan 1 Install the fan into the slot on the system board. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the fan module. 3 Connect the I/O board and system fan cable to the system board connectors. 4 Install the: a b c 5 WLAN card battery back cover Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer Removing the heatsink 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
b NOTE: Loosen the screws in the order of the callout numbers [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]. Except for screws [5,6,7] the rest of the screws are retention screws and cannot be fully removed Remove the heatsink module from the slot on the system board [8]. Installing the heatsink 1 Place the heatsink module into its slot on the system board. 2 Tighten the screws to secure the heatsink module to the computer.
Installing the LED board 1 Place the LED module into its slot on the computer chassis. 2 Tighten the screw to secure the LED module to the computer chassis. 3 Connect the LED module cables to the computer chassis. 4 Install the: a b 5 battery back cover Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer Removing the speakers 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
4 To remove the speakers: a b Unroute the cables along the routing channels. Lift and remove the speakers from the computer.
Installing the speakers 1 Insert the speakers into the slot on the computer chassis. 2 Route the speaker cable along the routing channel. 3 Connect the speaker cables to the connectors on the system board and the LED board. 4 Install the: a b 5 battery back cover Follow the procedure in After working inside your computer Removing the system board 1 Follow the procedure in Before working inside your computer.
4 To remove the system board cables: a b Disconnect the display power supply cable [1]. Lift the tab to disconnect the display connector cable [2].

Installing the system board 1 Align the system board into its slot on the computer chassis. 2 Install the screws that secure the system board to the computer. 3 Connect the power supply and display cables to their connectors.
NOTE: If you have purchased the touch version of this computer, you will not be able to further disassemble the display. Instead the entire display assembly needs to be replaced. 2 Remove the: a b c 3 To remove the display hinges: a b c d 4 back cover battery WLAN card Lift the tab to disconnect the display cables from the system board [1] . Lift the display cable latch [2] . Unroute the display cable from around the system fan [3] [4].
5 To remove the display panel: a b c Place the computer on a flat surface as indicated. Remove the screws that secure the display hinges to the computer chassis. [1] Lift to remove the display panel.
Installing the display assembly 1 Align the display assembly with the display hinges of the computer chassis. 2 Tighten the screws that secure the display hinges. 3 Connect the display cables to the connector on the system board. 4 Affix the tape to attach the display cable to the computer. 5 Route the display cables along the system fan module on the chassis.

4 Technology and components Power adapter The laptop is shipped with 45 W adapter / 65 W adapter (optional). • 45 W power adapter (UMA graphic). This adapter uses a USB-C connector. • 65 W power adapter (Discrete graphic). This adapter uses a barrel adapter, 3.5 mm barrel WARNING: When you disconnect the power adapter cable from the laptop, grasp the connector, not the cable itself, and then pull firmly but gently to avoid damaging the cable.
The processor performance details are displayed. Verifying the processor usage in Resource Monitor 1 2 Right Click on the Taskbar. Select Start Task Manager. The Windows Task Manager window is displayed. 3 Click the Performance tab in the Windows Task Manager window. The processor performance details are displayed. 4 Click Open Resource Monitor. Chipsets All laptops or notebook communicate with the CPU through the chipset. This laptop is shipped with the Intel Mobile CM238 .
Downloading the chipset driver 1 Turn on the laptop. 2 Go to Dell.com/support. 3 Click Product Support, enter the Service Tag of your laptop, and then click Submit. 4 Click Drivers and Downloads. 5 Select the operating system installed on your laptop. 6 Scroll down the page, expand Chipset, and select your chipset driver. 7 Click Download File to download the latest version of the chipset driver for your laptop.
Downloading drivers 1 Turn on the laptop. 2 Go to Dell.com/support. 3 Click Product Support, enter the Service Tag of your laptop, and then click Submit. 4 Click Drivers and Downloads. 5 Select the operating system installed on your laptop. 6 Scroll down the page and select the graphic driver to install. 7 Click Download File to download the graphic driver for your laptop. 8 After the download is complete, navigate to the folder where you saved the graphic driver file.

Audio controller This laptop ships with integrated Realtek ALC3266–CG Waves MaxxAudio Pro controller. It is a High Definition audio codec designed for Windows desktop and laptops. Downloading the audio driver 1 Turn on the laptop. 2 Go to www.Dell.com/support. 3 Click Product Support, enter the Service Tag of your laptop and click Submit.
WLAN cards This laptop supports the Intel Dual Band Wireless AC 8260 WLAN card. Secure Boot screen options Option Description Secure Boot Enable This option enables or disables the Secure Boot feature. • Disabled • Enabled Default setting: Enabled. Expert Key Management Allows you to manipulate the security key databases only if the system is in Custom Mode. The Enable Custom Mode option is disabled by default.
Identifying the hard drive in the BIOS 1 Turn on or restart your system. 2 When the Dell logo appears, perform the following action to enter the BIOS setup program: • With keyboard — Tap F2 until the Entering BIOS setup message appears. To enter the Boot selection menu, tap F12. The hard drive is listed under the System Information under the General group. Camera features This laptop comes with front-facing camera with the image resolution of 1280 x 720 (maximum).
Starting the camera application 1 Tap or click the Windows button and select All apps. 2 Select Camera from the apps list. 3 If the Camera App is not available in the apps list, search for it.
Memory features In this laptop, the memory (RAM) is not part of the system board. This laptop supports 2–16 GB DDR4 memory, up to 2133 MHz. The laptop has two SoDIMM slots and supports 2–32 GB DDR4 SDRAM memory, up to 2133 MHz. NOTE: Since memory is not part of the system board, it cannot be upgraded as a separate module. If the technical support determines that the memory is the cause of an issue, replace the system board.

Password Change Allows you to change the security password. System Configuration screen options Option Description SATA Operation Allows you to configure the internal SATA hard-drive controller. The options are: Drives • Disabled • AHCI • RAID On: This option is enabled by default. Allows you to configure the SATA drives on board. All drives are enabled by default. The options are: • SMART Reporting This field controls whether hard drive errors for integrated drives are reported during system startup.
Option Description Keyboard Backlight Timeout on AC This feature defines the time-out value for the keyboard backlight when an AC adapter is plugged into the system. The main keyboard illumination feature is not affected. Keyboard Illumination will continue to support the various illumination levels. This field has an effect when the backlight is enabled.
