1 Before You Begin This section provides procedures for removing and installing the components in your computer. Unless otherwise noted, each procedure assumes that the following conditions exist: • You have performed the steps in "Turning Off Your Computer" on page 9 and "Before Working Inside Your Computer" on page 10. • You have read the safety information in the Dell™ Product Information Guide.
Windows Vista™: Click the Windows Vista Start button , click the arrow in the lower-right corner of the Start menu as shown below, and then click Shut Down. The computer turns off after the operating system shutdown process is complete. 3 Ensure that the computer and all attached devices are turned off. If your computer and attached devices did not automatically turn off when you shut down your operating system, press and hold the power button until they turn off.
2 Turn off your computer (see "Turning Off Your Computer" on page 9). NOTICE: To disconnect a network cable, first unplug the cable from your computer and then unplug the cable from the network device. 3 Disconnect all telephone or network cables from the computer. 4 Close the display and turn the computer upside down on a flat work surface. NOTICE: To avoid damaging the system board, you must remove the main battery before you service the computer.
Before You Begin
Internal Card With Bluetooth® Wireless Technology 2 CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as a connector on the back of the computer).

3 Hard Drive CAUTION: If you remove the hard drive from the computer when the drive is hot, do not touch the metal housing of the hard drive. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To prevent data loss, turn off your computer (see "Turning Off Your Computer" on page 9) before removing the hard drive. Do not remove the hard drive while the computer is on, in standby mode, or in hibernate mode.
2 Turn the computer over, loosen the two captive screws on the hard drive cover, and then remove the cover. 1 1 captive screws (2) 3 Loosen the four captive screws on the hard drive cage and then lift the pull-tab to flip the cage towards the center of the computer so that the SATA cables and connectors are accessible.
1 captive screws (4) 4 Carefully remove the SATA cables from the hard drive or drives that are installed in the cage. Replacing a Hard Drive in the Hard Drive Cage 1 Remove two screws on each side of the hard drive cage to free the hard drive, then lift the drive out of its tray in the cage. NOTICE: When a hard drive is not in the computer, store it in protective antistatic packaging. See “Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge” in the Product Information Guide.
3 Place the new hard drive into the drive cage tray and secure it with two screws on each side. a Install the hard drive so that the manufacturer’s label faces the bottom of the drive cage and the SATA connectors are at the open end of the cage. b Install the primary hard drive in the tray labeled 0. You can install a secondary hard drive in the tray labeled 1.
4 Memory CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. You can increase your computer memory by installing memory modules on the system board. See "Specifications" in your Owner’s Manual for information on the memory supported by your computer. Install only memory modules that are intended for your computer. NOTE: Memory modules purchased from Dell are covered under your computer warranty.
1 2 1 captive screws (2) 2 memory module cover NOTICE: To prevent damage to the memory module connector, do not use tools to spread the memory-module securing clips. 4 If you are replacing a memory module, remove the existing module: 20 a Use your fingertips to carefully spread apart the securing clips on each end of the memory module connector until the module pops up. b Remove the module from the connector.
1 2 1 memory module 2 securing clip NOTICE: If you need to install memory modules in two connectors, install a memory module in the connector labeled “DIMM1” before you install a module in the connector labeled “DIMM2.” Insert memory modules at a 45-degree angle to avoid damaging the connector. 5 Ground yourself and install the new memory module: NOTE: If the memory module is not installed properly, the computer may not boot properly. No error message indicates this failure.
1 2 1 memory module 2 securing clip 6 Replace the memory module cover. NOTICE: If the cover is difficult to close, remove the module and reinstall it. Forcing the cover to close may damage your computer. 7 Insert the battery into the battery bay, or connect the AC adapter to your computer and an electrical outlet. 8 Turn on the computer. As the computer boots, it detects the additional memory and automatically updates the system configuration information. If prompted, press to continue.
5 Coin-Cell Battery CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as a connector on the back of the computer). NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you begin working inside the computer.
1 1 scribe 2 2 coin-cell battery 5 Remove the battery from the compartment on the system board by using a scribe or small screwdriver to lift one side of the battery at the notch in the plastic connector, being careful not to break the plastic. 6 Grasp the battery and pull it out of the battery compartment. 7 To install the coin-cell battery: a Insert the edge of the coin-cell battery into the plastic battery compartment under the lip on the compartment.
6 Hinge Cover CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as a connector on the back of the computer). NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you begin working inside the computer.

7 Keyboard For more information about the keyboard, see "Using the Keyboard and Touchpad" in your Owner’s Manual. NOTE: If you leave the area, ground yourself again when you return to the computer. b Insert the ribbon cable into the keyboard connector, and press down on the retainer clip to secure the cable in place. c Align the locking tab on the palm rest with the slot on the keyboard and slide the keyboard towards the bottom such that the tabs at the bottom edge of keyboard slides into the slots on the edge of the palm rest. d Replace the four keyboard screws. e Replace the hinge cover.
Keyboard
8 Communication Cards Subscriber Identity Module Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM) identify users uniquely through an International Mobile Subscriber Identity. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTE: Only GSM (HSDPA) type cards need a SIM. EVDO cards do not use a SIM. 1 Follow the procedures in "Before You Begin" on page 9. 2 In the battery bay, locate the SIM compartment.
If you ordered a Mini-Card with your computer, the card is already installed. Your computer supports two types of wireless Mini-Cards: • Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) • Mobile Broadband or Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions located in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery before you service the computer.
1 1 b antenna cables Release the card by pushing the metal securing tab away from the card until the card pops up slightly.
1 1 c metal securing tab Slide the card at a 45-degree angle out of its connector. NOTE: Do not insert a Mobile Broadband (WWAN) network card into the WLAN card connector. NOTE: The Mini-Card may have two or three connectors, depending on the type of card you ordered. NOTICE: The connectors are keyed to ensure correct insertion. If you feel resistance, check the connectors and realign the card. NOTICE: To avoid damaging the Mini PCI card, never place cables on top of or under the card.
6 Connect the antenna cables to the Mini-Card, ensuring that you route the cables correctly. 7 Replace the keyboard and the hinge cover. Flash Cache Module The FCM, or Flash Cache Module, is an internal memory card that helps improve the performance of your computer. The FCM card is also known as Intel® Turbo Memory and the Intel® Flash Cache Logic Chip Mini-card. NOTE: This card is only compatible with the Microsoft Windows Vista™ operating system.
1 1 metal securing tab Replacing the FCM 1 Insert the FCM connector at a 45-degree angle into the system board connector labeled "FCM" either in the WLAN or WWAN card compartment. 2 Press the other end of the FCM down into the slot on the system board until the card clicks into place.
9 Display Assembly CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as a connector on the back of the computer). NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you begin working inside the computer.
1 1 screws (4) 7 Make note of the cable routing and carefully dislodge the Mini-Card antenna cables from their routing guides and pull the cables with their connectors through the system board so that they are clear of the computer base. 8 Pull on the display cable pull-tab to disconnect the display graphics cable from the graphics card. 9 Disconnect the display power connector from the display connector on the system board.
2 1 1 display power connector 2 display graphics connector 10 If applicable, remove the camera cable connector from the system board. 11 Remove the display assembly from the computer base by rotating it towards you. Replacing the Display Assembly 1 If applicable, replace the camera cable. 2 Reconnect the display power cable to the connector on the system board. 3 Reconnect the display graphics cable to the connector on the graphics card.
7 Make note of the cable routing and carefully insert the Mini-Card antenna cables through their routing guides. 8 Replace the keyboard (see "Replacing the Keyboard" on page 28). 9 Replace the hinge cover. (see "Replacing the Hinge Cover" on page 26). Removing the Display Bezel NOTICE: The display bezel is extremely fragile. Be careful when removing it to prevent damaging the bezel. 1 Remove the two rubber screw-covers/display bumpers.
Replacing the Display Bezel 1 Realign the display bezel over the display panel, and gently snap into place. 2 Replace the two screws securing the display bezel to the display assembly. 3 Replace the two rubber screw-covers/display bumpers around the screws. Removing the Display Panel 1 Remove the display assembly (see "Removing the Display Assembly" on page 37). 2 Remove the display bezel (see "Removing the Display Bezel" on page 40). 3 Remove the display cable from the routing channel.

Replacing the Display Panel 1 Replace the light lobes connector. 2 Replace the eight screws that attach the display panel brackets to each side of the display panel. 3 Align the display panel with the display back and replace the four screws. 4 Connect the LCD camera cable to the display panel.

Replacing the LCD Camera 1 Align the camera under the securing clip and over the screw hole. 2 Replace the two screws that secure the camera to the display back. 3 Replace the display (see "Replacing the Display Assembly" on page 39).
11 GamePanel Removing the GamePanel CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as a connector on the back of the computer). 1 Follow the instructions in "Before You Begin" on page 9. 2 Remove the hinge cover (see "Removing the Hinge Cover" on page 25).
6 Remove the GamePanel. Replacing the GamePanel 1 Align the GamePanel over the screw holes. 2 Replace the two screws that secure the GamePanel. 3 Replace the GamePanel connector to the systemboard. 4 Replace the keyboard (see "Replacing the Keyboard" on page 28). 5 Replace the hinge cover (see "Replacing the Hinge Cover" on page 26).
12 Palm Rest Removing the Palm Rest CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To avoid electrostatic discharge, ground yourself by using a wrist grounding strap or by periodically touching an unpainted metal surface (such as the back panel) on the computer. 1 Follow the instructions in "Before You Begin" on page 9. 2 Remove any installed ExpressCards from the ExpressCard slot.
7 Turn the computer top side up and remove the nine screws marked P from the top of the palm rest.
1 1 touch pad cable NOTICE: Pull on the plastic tab on top of the connectors to avoid damaging the connectors. 8 Disconnect the touch pad cable from the system board. NOTICE: Carefully separate the palm rest from the computer base to avoid damage to the palm rest. 9 Starting at the back center of the palm rest, use your fingers to separate the palm rest from the computer base by lifting the inside of the palm rest while pushing in on the outside.
Replacing the Palm Rest 1 Align the palm rest with the computer base and gently snap it into place. 2 Connect the touch pad connector to the system board. 3 Replace the nine screws on the top of the palm rest. 4 Turn the computer upside down and replace the fourteen screws in the computer base. 5 Replace the display assembly (see "Replacing the Display Assembly" on page 39). 6 Replace the Mini Cards and memory modules.(see "Memory" on page 19 and "Communication Cards" on page 31).

Replacing the Processor Thermal-Cooling Assembly CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To prevent static damage to components inside your computer, discharge static electricity from your body before you touch any of your computer's electronic components. You can do so by touching an unpainted metal surface.
NOTE: The original pad can be reused if the original processor and heat sink are reinstalled together. If either the processor or heat sink is replaced, use the thermal pad provided in the kit to ensure that thermal conductivity is achieved. NOTE: This procedure assumes that you have already removed the processor thermal-cooling assembly and are ready to replace it. 1 Peel the backing off the thermal cooling pad and adhere the pad to the portion of the thermal-cooling assembly that covers the processor.

18 Processor Removing the Processor CAUTION: Before working inside your computer, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. Installing the Processor NOTICE: Ensure that the cam lock is in the fully open position before seating the processor. Seating the processor properly in the ZIF socket does not require force. NOTICE: A processor that is not properly seated can result in an intermittent connection or permanent damage to the processor and ZIF socket.
When the processor is correctly seated, all four corners are aligned at the same height. If one or more corners of the processor are higher than the others, the processor is not seated correctly. NOTICE: To prevent intermittent contact between the ZIF-socket cam screw and the processor when removing or replacing the processor, press to apply slight pressure to the center of the processor while turning the cam screw.

Replacing the Video Card Carefully align the video card assembly over the connector on the system board and press down. NOTE: The video card assembly is labeled "PUSH HERE." 1 2 3 1 screw 3 spring 2 battery latch assembly 8 Remove the spring from the hook on the computer base by lifting it up and away with a screwdriver or a plastic scribe. 9 Remove the plastic battery-latch assembly starting from the right side corner and proceeding towards the other end as shown below in the illustrations.

Replacing the Battery Latch Assembly 1 Insert the latch assembly into the channel on the computer base, and press it into place. 2 Using a small screwdriver, hook the spring over the hook on the computer base. 3 Place the battery latch release under the computer base, line it up with the hole in the base, and then replace the M2 x 2.5-mm screw in the assembly. Ensure that the newly installed latch moves smoothly and freely when pushed and released. 4 Replace the system board.
24 Flashing the BIOS If a BIOS-update program CD is provided with the new system board, flash the BIOS from the CD. If you do not have a BIOS-update program CD, flash the BIOS from the hard drive. Flashing the BIOS From a CD 1 Ensure that the AC adapter is plugged in and that the main battery is installed properly. NOTE: If you use a BIOS-update program CD to flash the BIOS, set up the computer to boot from a CD before inserting the CD. 2 Insert the BIOS-update program CD, and restart the computer.
The File Download window appears. 6 Click Save this program to disk and then click OK. The Save In window appears. 7 Click the down arrow to view the Save In menu, select Desktop, and then click Save. The file downloads to your desktop. 8 Click Close if the Download Complete window appears. The file icon appears on your desktop and is titled the same as the downloaded BIOS update file. 9 Double-click the file icon on the desktop and follow the instructions on the screen.
