Surge suppressors and AC line
conditioners – page 99
Protect your gear from surges,
lightning — and more — with
a power protection
device that also cleans
up electrical noise.
You can’t get clean
sound or a clean
picture without
clean power.
Speakers & Powered Subwoofer
Home theater speakers include a pair of front left
and right speakers for audio that moves across the
front soundstage (and stereo music);
a video-shielded center channel
speaker for dialogue and on-screen
action; between two and four
surround speakers for ambience
and effects; and a powered sub-
woofer for reproducing low bass.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
■
Great front left and right speakers.
Vital for movies and music — many audio
fans use high-quality tower or bookshelf speakers.
■
Center.
Your center channel carries a heavy load in home theater — dialogue,
on-screen effects and more. Get a good speaker with a wide frequency range.
■
Surrounds.
Choose surrounds that are closely matched to the other speakers
in your system, and also work easily with your room’s placement limitations.
■
Voice-matching.
For enveloping surround sound and smooth transitions, all your
speakers should be voice-matched — that is, possess the same tonal characteristics.
■
Thump!
What makes a sub great? Large driver size, an amplifier with high power
(more watts), and a low frequency response are three important features to look for.

Television
Your TV’s critical
contribution is a
sharp, natural picture.
Whether you choose
a conventional TV,
a flat-panel plasma or
LCD TV, or an HDTV-
capable set, crisp,
bright images are key.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR:
■
Video inputs.
Simply put, the more video inputs it has,
the more sources you can connect directly to it.
■
HDTV-capability.
The future of television is HDTV,
and high-definition programming is available now.
Consider a TV with the high-resolution clarity of HDTV
and progressive-scan handling.
■
Screen size.
For home theater, you should go as large as
your room and budget can handle. If you watch lots of
widescreen DVDs or receive HDTV broadcasts, consider
a TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio.
