If this unit is not properly installed by a qualified service person gas and/or carbon monoxide leakage (spillage) can occur. Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble the flu, with headaches, dizziness or nausea.
Safety information Continued 4. Never install the fireplace • in a recreational vehicle • in windy or drafty areas where curtains or other combustible (flammable) objects can make contact with the fireplace front • in high traffic areas 5. Do not modify this fireplace under any circumstances. Any parts removed for servicing must be replaced prior to operating fireplace. 6. Turn fireplace off and let cool before servicing, installing or repairing.
Product Features These are a few facts that can help you understand and enjoy your vented decorative fireplace: • The (V)CB36N(E) and (V)CB36P(E) series of vented decorative fireplaces may be recessed into an exterior chase, an interior flush wall enclosure or a framed-in corner installation. • Models (V)CB36N and (V)CB36P are equipped with a millivolt gas control system that does not require electricity to operate. A piezo ignitor is provided to light the pilot without using matches or lighters.
Pre-Installation Preparation Continued • A hearth extension is not required with this appliance. If one is installed, it is for aesthetic purposes only and does not have to meet standard requirements for hearth extensions. • If you plan on installing a television or entertainment center recessed above your fireplace, it is recommended that you maintain a minimum 18" (45.7 cm) above the top of louver opening.

INSTALLING OPTIONAL CONTROLS Continued WIRING DIAGRAMS NOTICE: This appliance is equipped with a vent safety shutoff switch which will shut down the appliance in case of a venting problem. Do not bypass the vent safety shutoff switch. If the appliance should shut down, have a qualified installer, service agency, or your gas supplier inspect the vent before operating. CAUTION: label all wires prior to disconnection when servicing controls. Wiring errors can cause improper and dangerous operation.
Fireplace Installation CHECK GAS TYPE Use only the correct type of gas (natural or propane/LP). If your gas supply is not the correct gas type, do not install fireplace. See dealer where you purchased your fireplace for proper gas type fireplace or tro purchase gas conversion kit (see Accessories, page 34). Installing Gas Piping to Fireplace Location WARNING: A qualified service person must connect fireplace to gas supply. Follow all local codes.
Fireplace Installation Continued We recommend that you install a sediment trap/ drip leg in supply line as shown in Figure 23. Locate sediment trap/drip leg where it is within reach for cleaning. Install in piping system between fuel supply and fireplace. Locate sediment trap/drip leg where trapped matter is not likely to freeze. A sediment trap traps moisture and contaminants. This keeps them from going into fireplace gas controls.
Fireplace Installation Continued Test Pressures Equal To or Less Than 1/2 PSIG (3.5 kPa) 1. Close equipment shutoff valve (see Figure 25). 2. Pressurize supply piping system by either opening propane/LP supply tank valve for propane/LP gas fireplace or opening main gas valve located on or near gas meter for natural gas fireplace or using compressed air. 3. Check all joints from propane/LP supply tank or gas meter to equipment shutoff valve (see Figure 26, for propane/LP or Figure 27, for natural gas).
Fireplace Installation Continued Spring Clips Removing Louver Panels Remove the top and bottom louver panels by simultaneously pulling both top end spring latches towards the center of the appliance until they are disengaged from the locating holes (see Figure 28). Repeat for bottom spring latches and pull the louvers outward. To install or replace items removed, simply reverse the procedures above. 1.

Inspecting Burners Check pilot flame pattern and burner flame patterns often. PILOT ASSEMBLY The pilot assembly is factory preset for the proper flame height. Alterations may have occurred during shipping and handling. Call a qualified service person to readjust the pilot if necessary. The position and pattern of the pilot flames in relation to the sensing devices should be as shown in Figures 38 and 39 respectively.
Cleaning and Maintenance WARNING: Turn off fireplace and let cool before cleaning. CAUTION: You must keep control areas, burners, and circulating air passages of fireplace clean. Inspect these areas of fireplace before each use. Have fireplace inspected yearly by a qualified service person. Fireplace may need more frequent cleaning due to excessive lint from carpeting, bedding mate rial, pet hair, etc. GLASS DOOR WARNING: Handle glass door panel with care. Do not strike, slam, or otherwise abuse glass.
Cleaning and Maintenance Continued LOGS • If you remove logs for cleaning, refer to Installing Logs and Glowing Embers, page 18, to properly replace logs. • Use a vacuum cleaner to remove any carbon buildup on logs. • Replace log(s) if broken. See Replacement Parts, page 34. • Replace ember material periodically as needed. See Replacement Parts, page 34. VENTING SYSTEM Conduct annual inspection of the venting system following these guidelines: 1.
Troubleshooting WARNING: Turn off heater and let cool before servicing. Only a qualified service person should service and repair heater. CAUTION: Never use a wire, needle or similar object to clean ODS/pilot. This can damage ODS/pilot unit. Note: All troubleshooting items are listed in order of operation. The two most common causes of a malfunctioning gas appliance are: 1. Loose wiring connections 2.
Troubleshooting Continued OBSERVED PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE REMEDY Manual Ignition System Only Pilot lights but flame goes out when control knob is released 1. Gas control knob not fully pressed in 2. Gas control knob not pressed in long enough 3. Equipment shutoff valve not fully open 4. Pilot flame not touching thermocouple, which allows thermocouple to cool, causing pilot to go out. This problem could be caused by one or more of the following: A) Low gas pressure B) Dirty or partially clogged pilot 5.
Troubleshooting Continued OBSERVED PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE REMEDY Heat produces a whistling noise when burner is lit 1. Turning gas control knob to HI position when burner is cold 2. Air in gas line 1. Turn gas control knob to LO position and let warm up for a minute 2. Operate burner until air is removed from line. Have gas line checked by prop a n e / L P or natural gas company 3. Clean burner (see Cleaning and Maintenance, page 23) or replace burner orifice 3.
Troubleshooting Continued OBSERVED PROBLEM POSSIBLE CAUSE REMEDY Electronic Ignition Models Only Ignitor will not spark or pilot will not light 1. No gas supply, or shutoff valve is OFF 1. Check to see if you have gas supply and that equipment shutoff valve is opened 2. Repeat lighting procedure several times to purge all air out of lines. If after repeated attempts appliance does not light, call for qualified service and repair 3.
TROUBLESHOOTING Continued WARNING: If you smell gas • Shut off gas supply. • Do not try to light any appliance. • Do not touch any electrical switch; do not use any phone in your building. • Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor’s phone. Follow the gas supplier’s instructions. • If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department. IMPORTANT: Operating heater where impurities in air exist may create odors.
