GAS RESPONSE PROOF TEST
WARNING
Any external alarm equipment, systems or
signaling devices that could be automatically
initiated by performing this test must be disabled
or bypassed before performing this test!
Gas Test Cell Method (Recommended)
Tools Required: Gas Test Cell provided by Det-Tronics,
P/N: 009246-001 (Low Range) or
P/N:009246-002(HighRange)
The Gas Cell provides a means of testing the operation
of the Model OPECL IR Gas Detector for response to
actual gas. The gas cell is typically used to verify the
factory calibration of the OPECL.
The gas cell has a known optical length and has
infrared transparent windows on both ends. When filled
with 100% v/v gas, it contains a specific LFL-m amount
of gas. When the gas cell is placed in the beam of the
open path detector, the detector output will rise to a
specific value.
The gas cell is not intended for routine use. It does,
however, demonstrate in a very direct way the response
of the detector to hydrocarbons along with the resulting
control action. This is particularly useful when required
by regulatory authorities.
For complete information regarding proper use of the
Gas Cell and testing of the OPECL detector, refer to
manual number 95-8591.
Optical Test Film Method
Tools Required: System Test Film provided by Det-Tronics
P/N: 007902-002
(0.75-1.5 LFL-meter signal output) or
P/N: 007902-003
(1.9-2.5 LFL-meter signal output)
Proper operation can be confirmed by placing an
optical test film into the light beam and checking for
the appropriate signal output level. Alarm conditions,
if present, should clear when the test film is removed
from the beam.
When the test film is in the light beam path of the
detector, inspection of proper analog signal level output
can be made by reading the analog signal output
displayed on the control device. Criteria for inspection
pass is a response signal within the range 0.75-1.5 LFL-
meters for p/n 007902-002 or 1.9-2.5 LFL-meters for
p/n 007902-003. If response is not within acceptable
limits, refer to the Fault/Failure Action Plan.
Zero Calibration
Tools Required: Magnet
Zero Calibration shall be conducted when required
as documented in the Calibration section of the
OPECL instruction manual. It is permissible to initiate
the Zero Calibration using the onboard magnetic
calibration switch, digital communication via MODBUS
communication, or the remote calibration line. In
all cases, the model OPECL gas detector should be
allowed to warm up for one hour minimum before
conducting calibration.
NOTE
The last ten (10) Calibration procedures are
loggedwith atimestamp(operatinghourunits)
in the OPECL onboard memory. In addition,
completion of Calibration procedures will be
recordedanddocumentedintheSISlogbook.
Successful completion of the Gas Response Proof Test
must be recorded and documented in the SIS logbook.
