34.1 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION OF FLYWHEEL, FLYWHEEL
HOUSING A ND RELATED PARTS
This section explains the description(s) and operation(s) of the following components:
□ Flywheel
□ Ring Gear
□ Flywheel Housing
34.1.1 Flywheel
The flywheel is attached to the rear end of the c rankshaft with twelve bolts. The bolt holes in the
crankshaft and flywheel are equally spaced.
34.1.2 Ring Gear
The steel ring gear and flywheel is a two-piece assembly. Prior to assembly, the ring gear is heated
to expand its diameter. It is then installed onto the fl ywheel and allowed to cool. After the ring
gear cools, it contracts onto the flywheel, locking it in place.
