Replace Spin-On Type Primary
or Secondary Fuel Filter
Elements
Replace spin-on fuel filter elements as
follows:
1. Shut down the engine and allow
it to cool.
2. With the e ng ine at ambient
temperature and cool to the touch,
place a suitable container under
the filter.
3. A fuel shutoff valve may be
installed on the discharge side
of the secondary fuel filter. I f
installed, tur n the handle on
the shutoff valve to the closed
position (perp endicular to the
valve).
NOTICE:
To improve engine starting, have
replacement filters filled with fuel
and ready to install immediately
after used filters are removed. T his
will prevent possible siphoning and
fuel system aeration.
4. Using a suitable band type filter
wrench, remove the primary
and secondary fuel filters.
See Figure 24. Dispose of the
filters in an environmentall y
responsible manner, according
to federal (EPA) and/or state
recommendations.
5. If not previously filled, fill new
replacement filters with clean
diesel fuel and coat the gaskets
lightly with the fuel oil.
6. Thread the new filters onto the
adaptor inserts until th e gaskets
make full contact w ith the adaptor
head and n o side movement
is evident. Tighten fi lters an
additional one-half turn by hand,
or as indicated on the filter.
