HOW-TO SECTION
NOTICE:
Do not allow the fuel level in the
see-thru cover to fall below the top
of the collar, since this may lead
to interruption of the fuel flow and
engine stalling.
2. Start the engine and allow the
lubrication system to r each its
normal operating pressure, then
increase engine speed to high idle
for 2 to 3 minutes. After the a ir is
purged and w ith the engine still
running, loosen the vent cap on
the filter cover. the fuel level in
the cover will start f alling. When
the fuel level falls to the top o f
the collar on t he Fuel Pro cover,
tighten the vent cap qu ickly by
hand.
NOTE:
If the engine fails to start after
replacement of f u el filters, the fuel
system will require priming with tool
J 5956, or equivalent. Autho rized
Detroit Diesel distributors are properly
equipped to perform this service.
How to Select Coolant
The section coves selection of the
required coolant for Series 50 engines.
Definitions
This section covers selection of
the required coolant for Series 50
engines. To help ensure complete
understanding of the information, the
definitions of the f ollowing term s are
provided:
Antifreeze — Ethylene glycol
or propylene glyco l containing a
corrosion inhibitor package and which
meets an appro priate heavy-duty
specification (i.e., TMC RP-329 for
ethylene glycol or TMC RP-330 for
propylene glycol).
Coolant — The fluid mixture
circulating in the engine cooling
system, typically a mixture of 50%
water and 50% antifreeze.
Drop-Out — Precipitated slu dge or
deposit formation on cooling system
components.
Fully Formulated Antifreeze —
Contains all the necessary in hibitors
to protect a diesel engine, and does
not, therefore, require a pre-charge of
SCA before its first use.
Initial–F ill Coolant — The coolant
that is used in a new or rebuilt engine,
or any time th e cooling system is
emptied and then refilled with coolant.
