SERIES 50 OPERATOR'S GUIDE
The proper maintenance involves
periodic evaluation using Power Trac
3-Way Coolant Test Strips and the
addition of SCA as needed, indicated
by the strip test.
To verify coolant acceptability, submit
a sample for coolant analysis every
300,000 miles (480,00 0 km ), three
(3) years, or 5,000 o perating hours,
whichever comes rst. Submit t he
sample in a DDC Power Trac Coolant
Test Bottle. Required part numbers
are listed in Tab le 46.
CoolantLifeofOATCoolant—A
properly maintained OAT coolant may
be operated 6 00,00 0 miles (960,000
km), four (4) years, or until overhaul,
whichever com es rst. At this time the
system must be completely drained,
thoroughly cleaned, and relled.
OAT Coolants require the addition of
an extender at 300,000 miles (480,000
km), two (2) years, or 5,000 hours,
whichever com es rst. Use 1 pint
of extender for every 20 gallons of
coolant.
Coolant Life of O ther Coolants
Other properly maintained coolants
may be operated up to 250,000 miles
(480,000 km), two (2) years, o r 4,000
operating hours, whichever comes
rst. At t his time the system must
be completely drained, thoroughly
cleaned, and relled.
How to Drain and F lush the
Cooling System
HOT COOLANT
To avoid scalding from the
expulsion of hot coolant, never
remove the cooling sy stem
pressure cap while the engine is
at operating temperature. Wear
adequate protective clothing
(face shield, rubber gloves,
apron, and boots). Remove the
cap slowl y to relieve pressure.
1. With the engine cool, dr a in the
previous solution from the engine
and radiator. Dispose of the
coolant in an environmentally
friendly manner, according
to state and/or federal (EPA)
recommendations.
2. Rell th e cooling system
with clean, soft water and a
good cooling system cleaning
compound, such a s those
listed in Table 45 in the
Specications section. If
the engine is warm, ll slowly
to prevent the rapid cooling and
distortion of the metal castings.
3. Start the engine and operate it for
fteen minutes to circulate the
solution thoroughly.
