7. Stop the engine and allow it to
cool.
8. With the engine cool, drain the
cleaner residue from the cooling
system.
9. Rell the system with the required
coolant. Refer to section How to
Select Coolant.
10. Entrapped air must be purged
after lling the cooling system.
To do this, allow the engine to
warm up w ithout the pressure cap
installed. With the t ransmission
in neutral, increase engine speed
above 1000 RPM and add coolant
as required. In stall the pressure
cap after the coolant level has
stabilized at the bottom of the
radiator ller neck.
NOTICE:
If the engine overheats and
the coolant level is satisfactory,
the cooling system may require
cleaning with a descaling solvent
and backushing. Authorized
Detroit Diesel service outlets are
properly equipped to perform these
services.
In addition to the cleaning procedure,
other components of the cooling
system should be checked periodically
to keep the engine operating at peak
efciency.
Hoses. Cooling system hoses should
be inspected and any hose that shows
obvious signs of damage or feels
abnormally soft or hard should be
replaced. Dam aged clamps should
also be replaced. All external leaks
should be corrected as soon as
detected.
NOTE:
If Detroit Diesel Power Cool
antifreeze/coolant (or eq uivalent fu lly
formulated, precha rged antifreeze)
is used, a precharge elemen t is not
required. Coolant inhibitor levels
must be checked at the intervals
listed in Table 25.
