OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR A FIRST TIME START
If the engine is equipped with a
fuel/water separator, drain off any
water that has accumulated. Water
in fuel can seriously affect engine
performance and may cause engine
damage. D etroit Diesel recommends
installation of a fuel/water separator
wherever water contam in a tio n is a
concern.
Other Checks
Make sure the t ransmission is
filled to the proper lev el with th e
fluid recommended by the gear
manufacturer. D o not overfill.
Make sure cable connections to
the storage batteries are clean and
tight. Check the hydrometer “eye” of
maintenance-free batteries for charge.

Check drive belts to make sure they
are in good condition (not cracked,
torn, worn or glazed) and are p roperly
adjusted.
If lead-acid or low-maintenance
batteries are used, make sure battery
electrolyte level is normal.
Check the turbocharger for signs of
oil or exhaust leaks. Leaks should be
corrected before starting the engine.
Check engine mounting bolts for
tightness. Bolts should be retightened,
if necessary.
Starting the Engine
Before starting the engine the first
time, refer to the System Checks
section and perform the operations
listed.
NOTICE:
The t urbocharger may be seriously
damaged if the engine is cranke d
withtheairshutdownintheclosed
position.
If the engine has an emergency manual
or automatic shutdown system, make
sure the control i s set in th e open
position before starting.
Theenginemayrequiretheuseofa
cold weather starting aid if the ambient
temperature is below 40° F (4° C).
