GENERAL E Warranty In your own interest, and in order to guarantee product reliability, you are strongly advised to refer to our authorized Dealers and workshops for any servicing requiring particular technical expertise. Our highly skilled staff have access to the implements required to perform any servicing job at best, and use Ducati original spare parts only as the best guarantee for full interchangeability, smooth running and long life. All Ducati motorcycles come with a “Warranty Card”.
Useful information for safe riding Warning Read this section before riding your motorcycle. Accidents are frequently due to inexperience. Always make sure you have your licence with you when riding; you need a valid licence to be entitled to ride your motorcycle. Do not lend your motorcycle to inexperienced riders or who do not hold a valid licence. Both rider and pillion passenger must always wear a safety helmet.
Carrying the maximum load allowed Your motorcycle is designed for long-distance riding, carrying the maximum load allowed in full safety. Even weight distribution is critical to preserving these safety features and avoiding trouble when performing sudden manoeuvres or riding on bumpy roads. E Information about carrying capacity The total weight of the motorcycle in running order including rider, pillion passenger, luggage and additional accessories should not exceed 390 Kg.

Instrument panel (fig. 4) 1) High beam light (blue). Comes on when high beam is on. 2) Turn indicator light (green). Comes on and flashes when a turn indicator is on. 3) Fuel warning light (yellow). Comes on when there are about 3.5 liters fuel left in the tank (3 liters in the plastic tank). 4) Neutral light N (green). Comes on when in neutral position. 5) Engine oil pressure light (red). Comes on when engine oil pressure is too low.
LCD unit functions When the ignition key is turned to ON, the instrument panel carries out a Check of all instruments (pointers, display, lights) (see fig. 5 and 6). When the TRIP function is enabled (trip meter), display (LCD 1) will reset.
Oil temperature When the oil temperature goes below 50 °C (122 °F), "LO" will be displayed. "HI" will be displayed when the temperature exceeds 170 °C (338 °F). Fuel light "FUEL" will be displayed when the fuel warning light comes on. Maintenance indicator After the first 1,000 Km/621 mi and then every 10,000 Km/ 6210 mi, "MAInt" will be displayed for 5 seconds when turning the key to ON. It reminds you of the routine maintenance servicing to be done.
E The immobilizer system For improved anti-theft protection, the motorcycle is equipped with an IMMOBILIZER, an electronic system that inhibits engine operation whenever the ignition switch is turned off. Accommodated in the handgrip of each ignition key is an electronic device that modulates an output signal. This signal is generated by a special antenna incorporated in the switch when the ignition is turned on and changes every time.
Code card The keys come with a CODE CARD (fig. 8) that reports: A) (fig. 9) the electronic code to be used in case of engine block, i.e. bike did not start after key-ON. Warning Keep the CODE CARD in a safe place. However, it is advisable to keep the electronic code printed on the CODE CARD handy when you ride your motorcycle, in case it is necessary to override engine block through the procedure that uses the throttle twistgrip.
E Procedure to disable immobilizer engine block through throttle twistgrip 1) Turn the key to ON and fully open throttle. Keep it open. The EOBD warning light turns off after 8 seconds. 2) Release the throttle as soon as the EOBD warning light turns off. 3) EOBD pilot light will flash. Count a number of flashes corresponding to the first figure of the code, open full throttle and keep the position for 2 seconds, then release.
Operation When the ignition key is turned to OFF, the immobilizer inhibits engine operation. When the ignition key is turned back to ON to start the engine, the following happens: 1) if the CPU recognised the code, the CODE light on the instrument panel will flash briefly. This means that the immobilizer system has recognised the key code and enabled engine ignition. When you press the START button, the engine will start up. 2) If the CODE light stays on, it means that the code has not been recognised.
Ignition switch and steering lock (fig. 10) It is located in front of the fuel tank and has four positions: A) ON: lights and engine on; B) OFF: lights and engine off; C) LOCK: steering locked; D) P: parking light and steering lock. E Note To move the key to the last two positions, press it down before turning it. Switching to (B), (C) and (D), you will be able to take the key out. Warning This vehicle is equipped with an energy-saving CPU.
Left switch (fig. 11.1 - 11.2) 1) Dip switch, light dip switch, two positions: position = low beam on; position = high beam on. 620/800 Note This device is not fitted on the Australia and Japan versions. 2) Switch = 3-position turn indicator: centre position = OFF; position = left turn; position = right turn. To cancel turn indicators, push in when switch has returned to central position. 3) Button = warning horn. 4) Button = passing. E fig. 11.1 1000 fig. 11.
E Clutch lever (fig. 12.1 - 12.2) Lever (1) (fig. 12.2) disengages the clutch. It features a dial adjuster (2) (fig. 12.2) for lever distance from the twistgrip on handlebar. To set lever distance from twistgrip, push lever (1) (fig. 12.2) fully forward and turn the dial adjuster (2) (fig. 12.2) to one of its four positions. Remember that position no. 1 gives maximum distance between lever and twistgrip, whereas lever and twistgrip are closest when adjuster is set to position no. 4.
Cold start lever (fig. 13) Use this device to start the engine from cold. It will increase the engine idling speed after starting. Lever positions: A) = closed B) = fully open. The lever can be opened and closed gradually to adjust speed until engine is fully warm (see page 37). A B Important Never use the cold start lever when the engine is warm or leave it open when riding. E fig.
Right switch (fig. 14.1) 1) Switch, light switch, three positions: right position = light off; centre position = front and rear parking lights, number plate and instrument panel lights on; left position = headlight, front and rear parking lights, number plate and instrument panel lights on. E 2) Switch for ENGINE STOP, two positions: position (RUN) = run. position (OFF) = stop. Warning This switch is mainly intended for use in emergency cases when you need to stop the engine quickly.
Throttle twistgrip (fig. 14.2) The twistgrip (1) on the right handlebar opens the throttles. When released, it will spring back to the initial position (idling speed). 3 2 E 1 fig. 14.2 Front brake lever (fig. 14.2) Pull in the lever (2) towards the twistgrip to operate the front brake. The system is hydraulically operated and you just need to pull the lever gently. Warning Please read the instructions on page 39 before using these controls.
Rear brake pedal (fig. 15) Push down on the pedal (1) to apply the rear brake. The system is hydraulically operated. E Gear change pedal (fig. 16) The gear change pedal is at rest when in the central position N, is moved up and down to change gears and then returns to the central position. down = push down on the pedal to engage 1st gear and to shift down. The N light will go out. up = lift the pedal to engage the 2nd gear and then the 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gear.
Setting the gear change and rear brake pedals The gear change and rear brake pedals can be adjusted to suit the preferred riding position of each rider. To set the gear change pedal, lock linkage (1) and loosen the check nuts (2) and (3). 1 Note Nut (2) has a left-hand thread. Fit an open-end wrench to hexagonal element of linkage (1) and rotate until setting pedal in the desired position. Tighten both check nuts onto linkage. To set the rear brake pedal, loosen check nut (4).

Tank filler plug (fig. 20) Opening Lift the protection lid (1) and fit the ignition key into the lock. Turn the key clockwise 1/4 turn to unlock. Lift the plug. Closing Refit the plug with the key in it and push it down into its seat. Turn the key anticlockwise to its initial position and take it out. Close the lock protection lid (1). Note The plug can only be closed with the key in. 1/4 OPEN 0 1 E fig.
Seat catch and helmet hook E Opening Fit the ignition key into the lock. Turn the key clockwise to detach seat from frame. Pull the seat backwards to slide it off its front holders. On the rear end of the compartment underneath the seat, there is the helmet fastening cable (1) (see page 43). Insert the cable into the helmet, slide the end of the cable onto the pin (2). Leave helmet hanging outside and refit the seat.
Side stand (fig. 23) Important Before lowering the side stand, make sure that the bearing surface is hard and flat. Do not park on soft or pebbled ground or on asphalt melt by the sun heat and similar or the motorcycle may fall over. When parking in downhill road tracts, always park the motorcycle with its rear wheel facing downhill. To pull down the side stand, hold the motorcycle handlebar with both hands and push down on the stand (1) with your feet until it is fully extended.
E Shock absorber adjusters The rear shock absorber has outer adjusters that enable you to adjust your motorcycle to the load. The adjuster (1) located on the right side, on the connection holding the shock absorber to the swingarm, controls rebound damping. Turn the adjuster (1) clockwise to increase damping (H), anticlockwise to reduce it (S). STANDARD setting: turn the adjuster (1) all the way in (clockwise) then slacken it 8 clicks.
Warning The shock absorber is filled with gas under pressure and may cause severe damage if taken apart by unskilled persons. When carrying a passenger and luggage, set the rear shock absorber spring to maximum preload to improve motorcycle handling and keep safe clearance from the ground. You may find that rebound damping needs readjusting. Now turn the screw anticlockwise and listen for the clicks that identify setting positions no. “1”, “2” and so on.
To change the preload of the spring inside each fork leg, turn the adjusting nut (2) with a 22-mm hexagon wrench. Preload setting range (A) is from 25 to 10 mm Factory setting is 18 mm. Important Adjust both fork legs to same settings. 3 E fig.
Changing motorcycle track alignment (fig. 27-2829) Motorcycle track alignment is the result of tests carried out under different riding conditions by our technical staff. Modifying factory setting is a very delicate operation, which may lead to serious damages if carried out by unskilled people. Before changing standard setting, measure the reference value (H, fig. 27). E H The rider can modify track alignment according to his/her needs by changing working position of the shock absorber.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE Running-in recommendations Max. rotation speed (fig. 30) Rotation speed for running-in period and during standard use (rpm): 1) up to 1000 km; 2) from 1000 to 2500 km; 3) after 2500 km. 1.000 Km 6 5 1.000 ÷ 2.500 Km 7 8 2.500 Km 4 From 1000 to 2500 km At this point, you can squeeze some more power out of your engine, being careful, however, to never exceed: 7500 rpm.
Important During the whole running-in period, the maintenance and service rules recommended in the Warranty Card should be observed carefully. Failure to comply with these rules will release Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A. from any liability whatsoever for any engine damage or shorter engine life. E After 2500 km After running-in, never exceed the following values during the motorcycle standard use: 9,000 rpm.
Starting the engine Note Follow the “High ambient temperature” procedure to start the engine when it is warm. 2) Move the fast-idle lever to position (B) (fig. 33). 3) Check that the stop switch (1, fig. 32) is positioned to (RUN), then press the starter button (2). Warning Before starting the engine, become familiar with the controls you will need to use when riding. E Regular ambient temperature (10 °C/50 °F to 35 °C/95 °F): 1) Move the ignition key to ON (fig. 31).
E This model is equipped with a servoignition system. To achieve assisted engine starting, press the button (2) and release it immediately. Pressing the button (2) operates automatic engine starting for a maximum period of time that varies depending on engine temperature. When the engine has started, the system prevents the starter motor from turning over. If the engine fails to start, allow at least 2 seconds before pressing the starter button (2) again.
High ambient temperature (over 35 °C/95 °F): Follow the same procedure for “Regular ambient temperature”, however, do not use the cold start device. Cold ambient temperature (below 10 °C/50 °F): Follow the procedure for “Regular ambient temperature”, however allow 5 minutes for the engine to warm up (see step 5). Moving off 1) Disengage the clutch squeezing the control lever. 2) Push down on gear change lever sharply with the tip of your foot to engage the first gear.
Braking Slow down in time, shift down to engine-brake first and then brake applying both brakes. Pull the clutch lever before stopping the motorcycle, to avoid sudden engine stop. E Warning Use both brake lever and pedal for effective braking. Using only one of the brakes will give you less braking power. Never use brake controls harshly or violently or you may lock the wheels and lose control of the motorcycle. When riding in the rain or on slippery surfaces, braking will become less effective.
Stopping the motorcycle Slow down gradually, then shift down and release the throttle twistgrip. Finally change from first to neutral. Apply brakes and you will bring the motorcycle to a complete stop. To switch the engine off, simply turn the key to OFF (page 18). Important Never leave the key in the ON position when engine is stopped, or this will damage the electric components. E fig. 34 Refueling Never overfill the tank when refueling. Fuel should never be touching the rim of filler recess (fig. 35).
E Parking Stop the motorcycle, then put it on the side stand to park it (see page 29). To avoid theft, turn the handlebar fully left and turn the key to LOCK position. If you park in a garage or other facilities, make sure that there is proper ventilation and that the motorcycle is not near a source of heat. If nedeed, you may leave the parking lights on by turning the key to position P. Important Do not leave the key turned to P for long periods or the battery will run down.
Tool kit and accessories (fig. 37) The compartment under the seat holds: an Owner’s manual; a helmet fastening cable; a tool bag for usual maintenance and checks. To reach this compartment, remove the seat first (page 28) then the protective cover (1). MAIN MAINTENANCE OPERATIONS Lifting the fuel tank (fig. 39) E Warning Make sure the fuel in the tank is less than 5 litres or fuel may leak out through the filler plug breather. 1 fig. 39 Remove the seat (page 28) and lift the hook (1). Lift the tank and unhook the service rod (2, fig. 40) from its seat under the seat. Place the tank onto the rod. When you have finished, reverse the above procedure to refit. Warning When lowering the tank, make sure lines are properly routed to avoid squeezing.
Changing air filter (fig. 41) Replace the air filter at the required intervals shown in the routine maintenance chart (see Warranty Card). The air box is accessible after lifting the fuel tank as described on page 44. To remove the filter, release the cover clips (1) on both sides of the air box and take off the cover (2). Remove the filter cartridge (3, fig. 42) and fit a new one. Important A clogged filter will reduce air intake, increase fuel consumption, reduce engine power, and foul the spark plugs.
E Checking brake and clutch fluid level (fig. 43.1 43.2) Fluid level should never fall below the MIN mark on each reservoir. If level drops below the limit, air might get into the circuit and affect the operation of the system involved. Brake and clutch fluid must be topped up and changed at the intervals specified in the routine maintenance chart (see Warranty Card) by a Ducati Dealer or Authorized Workshop. Important It is recommended all brake and clutch lines be changed every four years. 620/800 Fig.
Brake system If you find exceeding play on brake lever or pedal and brake pads are still in good condition, contact a Ducati Dealer or Authorized Workshop to have the system inspected and any air drained out of the circuit. Warning Brake and clutch fluid will damage paintwork and plastic parts if accidentally spilled. Hydraulic oil is corrosive; it may cause damages and lead to severe injuries. Never mix different quality oils. Check seals for proper sealing. Checking brake pads for wear (fig.
E Lubricating cables and joints The condition of the outer sheaths of the throttle and fast-idle cables should be checked at regular intervals. The sheaths should show no signs of squeezing or cracking. Work the controls to make sure the cable slides smoothly inside the sheath: if you feel any friction or hard spots, have the cable replaced by a Ducati Dealer or Authorized Workshop. To prevent these failures, smear the end of the Bowden cables with SHELL Advance Grease or Retinax LX2 at regular intervals.
2÷4 mm ➤ ➤ Throttle cable adjustment The throttle twistgrip must have a free play of 2 - 4 mm, measured at the edge of the twistgrip and at all positions of the handlebars. If it needs adjusting, use the suitable adjuster (1, fig. 46) provided on the throttle control. 1 E fig.
Charging the battery (fig. 47) Before charging the battery, it is best to remove it from the motorcycle. Always disconnect the black negative terminal (-) first, and then the red positive terminal (+). Undo the straps (1) and remove the battery. E Warning Batteries develop explosive gases: keep battery away from heat sources. Charge the battery in a well ventilated room. Connect the battery charger leads to the battery terminals (red to positive terminal +, black to negative terminal -).
Chain tensioning Turn the rear wheel slowly until you find the position where chain is tightest. With the motorcycle on the side stand, push the chain up pressing with a finger at the mid-length of swingarm. The lower portion of the chain should have a slack of 25÷27 mm (620), 25 mm (800/1000) (fig. 48). To adjust chain tension, slacken the nut (1, fig. 49) of the wheel shaft. Then tighten (clockwise) or slacken similarly the screw (2) on both sides of the swing arm to increase or reduce chain tension.
Chain lubrication The chain fitted on your motorcycle has O-rings that keep dirt out of and lubricant inside the sliding parts. The seals might be irreparably damaged if the chain is cleaned using non-specific solvents or washed using steam or water jets. Dry the chain using compressed air or absorbent material and apply SHELL Advance Chain or Advance Teflon Chain on each link. E Important Using non-specific lubricants may damage chain, front and rear sprocket.
Replacing bulbs Before replacing a burnt-out bulb, make sure that the new one complies with voltage and wattage as specified on page 70 - “Electric System”. Headlamp (fig. 50 and 51) To gain access to headlamp bulbs, slacken the lower screw (1) holding the rim-reflector assembly to the body and disconnect the connector (2, fig. 51) from the headlamp. Release the clip (3, fig. 51) that secures the bulb and remove it from the socket. 1 E fig. 50 3 2 fig.
Replace the bulb (4, fig. 52). E Note Never touch the transparent body of the new bulb with your fingers or it will blacken resulting in reduced bulb brilliancy. Insert the locating pegs of the bulb base into their seats to obtain correct alignment; hook the clip (3) to the headlamp holders. Reconnect the cables. 4 To change the parking light bulb, withdraw the bulb holder (5, fig. 53). The bulb is of the bayonet-type: press and rotate anti-clockwise to remove.
Turn indicators (fig. 54) Remove the screw (1) and detach the glass (2) from the body. The bulb is of the bayonet-type: press and rotate anticlockwise to remove. Fit the spare bulb by pressing and turning clockwise until it clicks. Refit the glass sliding the small tab (A) into the suitable slot in the indicator body. Tighten the screw (1). A 1 Stop light (fig. 55) To replace the stop and parking light bulb, unscrew the two screws (1) that secure the glass (2). Remove the glass.
E Headlamp alignment (fig. 56) When checking headlamp alignment, put the motorcycle upright. Tyres should be inflated at the correct pressure and one person should be sitting astride the motorcycle, keeping it at right angles to its longitudinal axis and opposite a wall or a screen, 10 meters apart from it. Then draw a horizontal line dictated by headlamp center and a vertical one in line with the longitudinal axis of motorcycle. If possible, perform this check in dim light.
Tyres Front pressure 2.1 bar - 2.3 Kg/sq cm Rear pressure: 2.2 bar - 2.4 Kg/sq cm Tyre repair or replacement In the event of a tiny puncture, tubeless tyres will take a long time to deflate, as they tend to keep air inside. If you find low pressure on one tyre, check the tyre for punctures. As tyre pressure is affected by temperature and altitude variations, you are advised to check and adjust it whenever you are riding in areas where ample variations in temperature or altitude occur.
Minimum tread depth Measure tread depth (S, fig. 58) at the point where tread is most worn down. It should not be less than 2 mm and anyway not below the legal limit. E Important Visually inspect the tyres at regular intervals for detecting cracks or cuts, on the side walls especially, bulges or large spots that are indicative of internal damage. Replace them if badly damaged. Remove any stones or other foreign bodies caught in the tread. fig.
Checking engine oil level (fig. 59) Engine oil level can be checked through the sight glass (1) provided on the clutch cover. When checking oil level, the motorcycle should be upright and the engine warm. Allow a few minutes for oil to settle to a steady level after stopping the engine. Oil level should be between the marks near the sight glass. Top up oil level with SHELL Advance Ultra 4, if low. Undo the filler plug (2) and top up to correct level. Refit the plug.
E Cleaning and replacing the spark plugs (fig. 60) Spark plugs are essential to smooth engine running and should be checked at regular intervals. This is done quite easily and quickly and provides a good measure of engine condition. Remove the spark plug caps and spark plugs from the cylinder head using the wrench supplied with the bike. Check the color of the insulating ceramic material of the central electrode: a light brown, even color is a sign of good engine condition.
Cleaning the motorcycle To preserve the finish of metal parts and paintwork, wash and clean your motorcycle at regular intervals, anyway according to the road conditions you ride in. Use specific products only. Prefer biodegradable products. Avoid aggressive detergents or solvents. Warning Braking performance may be impaired immediately after washing the motorcycle. Never grease or lubricate the brake discs. Loss of braking and further accidents may occur. Clean the discs with an oil-free solvent.
E Storing the bike away If the motorcycle is to be left unridden over long periods, it is advisable to carry out the following operations before storing it away: clean the motorcycle; remove the drain plug and seal and drain all fuel from tank; pour a few drops of engine oil into the cylinders through the spark plug seats, then crank the engine by hand a few times so a protective film of oil will spread on cylinder inner walls; place the motorcycle on a service stand; disconnect and remove the battery.

Fuses The main fuse box is located on the left side of the battery (fig. 63). To expose the fuses, take off the box protective cover (1). Mounting position and ampere capacity are marked on it. Only 6 of the fuses are connected. There are two spare fuses. 3 E The 40A fuse (2) located on the right side of the battery (fig. 63) protects the electronic regulator. Remove the fuse cap (3) to expose it. A blown fuse is identified by the interrupted inner filament (4, fig. 64). 2 1 fig.

Reporting of safety defects If you believe that your vehicle has a defect which could cause a crash or could cause injury or death, you should immediately inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in addition to notifying Ducati North America. If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall and remedy campaign.

USA E Crankcase Emission Control System The engine is equipped with a closed crankcase system to prevent discharging crankcase emissions into the atmosphere. Blow-by gas is returned to the combustion chamber through the air cleaner and the throttle body.
When the roadway is wet, rely more on the throttle to control vehicle speed and less on the front and rear brakes. The throttle should also be used judiciously to avoid skidding the rear wheel from too rapid acceleration or deceleration. On rough roads, exercise caution, slow down, and grip the fuel tank with your knees for better stability. When quick acceleration is necessary as in passing, shift to a lower gear to obtain the necessary power. Do not down shift at too high an r.p.m.
USA E Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certain conditions. Refuell in a well ventilated area with the engine stopped. Do not smoke or allow open flames or sparks when refuelling or servicing the fuel system. Always close the fuel petcock when the engine is not running to prevent flooding of the throttle body. Do not overfill fuel tank (see instructions page 41). Motorcycle exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas.
