Chapter 1 Introduction Eaton® 5125 uninterruptible power system (UPS) protects your sensitive electronic equipment from basic power problems such as power failures, power sags, power surges, brownouts, and line noise. Power outages can occur when you least expect it and power quality can be erratic. These power problems have the potential to corrupt critical data, destroy unsaved work sessions, and damage hardware — causing hours of lost productivity and expensive repairs.
INTRODUCTION Providing outstanding performance and reliability, the Eaton 5125's unique benefits include: S Buck and Double Boost regulation that ensures consistent voltage to your load by correcting voltage fluctuations without using battery power. S ABM® technology that uses advanced battery management to increase battery service life, optimize recharge time, and provide a warning before the end of useful battery life. Chapter 2 Safety Warnings IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS This manual contains important instructions that you should follow during installation and maintenance of the UPS and batteries. Please read all instructions before operating the equipment and save this manual for future reference. DANGER This UPS contains LETHAL VOLTAGES. All repairs and service should be performed by AUTHORIZED SERVICE PERSONNEL ONLY. There are NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS inside the UPS.

If you discover damage after acceptance, file a claim for concealed damage.
INSTALLATION Connecting the UPS Internal Battery To ensure proper battery operation: 1. Verify that the UPS is off and unplugged. 2. Remove the UPS front cover (see Figure 2). Figure 2. INSTALLATION Installing the UPS NOTE Do not make unauthorized changes to the UPS or accessories; otherwise, damage may occur to your equipment and void your warranty. Figure 6 shows a typical installation only. See “UPS Rear Panels” on page 24 for the rear panel of each model. To install the UPS and optional Extended Battery Modules (EBMs): 1. If installing an optional EBM, continue to Step 2; otherwise, proceed to Step 3. 2. Plug the EBM cable(s) into the battery connector(s) as shown in Figure 6.
INSTALLATION 4. Plug the equipment to be protected into the appropriate UPS output receptacles (see page 39 for more information on load segments). NOTE DO NOT protect laser printers with the UPS because of the exceptionally high power requirements of the heating elements. 5. For 208V/230V models only. Plug the detachable UPS power cord into the input connector on the UPS rear panel. 6. Plug the UPS power cord into a power outlet.

OPERATION Operating Modes The Eaton 5125 front panel indicates the UPS status through the UPS indicators. Figure 15 shows the UPS front panel indicators and controls.
OPERATION Normal Mode During Normal mode, the indicator illuminates and the front panel displays the percentage of UPS load capacity being used by the protected equipment (see Figure 16). The UPS monitors and charges the batteries as needed and provides power protection to your equipment. >100% 76–100% 51–75% 26–50% 0–25% Figure 16. OPERATION Battery Mode When the UPS is operating during a power outage, the alarm beeps once every four seconds and the + - indicator illuminates. ADDITIONAL UPS FEATURES Network Transient Protector The network transient protector, shown in Figure 20, is located on the rear panel and has jacks labeled IN and OUT. This feature accommodates a single RJ‐45 (10BaseT) network connector. Low voltage models can also accommodate an RJ‐11 telephone connector that provides protection for modems, fax machines, or other telecommunications equipment.
ADDITIONAL UPS FEATURES Load Segments Load segments are sets of receptacles that can be controlled by power management software, providing an orderly shutdown and startup of your equipment. For example, during a power outage, you can keep key pieces of equipment running while you turn off other equipment. This feature allows you to save battery power. See your power management software manual for details (refer to the Software Suite CD or www.eaton.com/powerquality for the latest information).

Chapter 6 UPS Maintenance This section explains how to: S Care for the UPS and batteries S Transport the UPS S Store the UPS and batteries S Replace the batteries S Test new batteries S Recycle used batteries or UPS UPS and Battery Care For the best preventive maintenance, keep the area around the UPS clean and dust‐free. If the atmosphere is very dusty, clean the outside of the system with a vacuum cleaner. For full battery life, keep the UPS at an ambient temperature of 25°C (77°F).
UPS MAINTENANCE Storing the UPS and Batteries If you store the UPS for a long period, recharge the battery every 6 months by plugging the UPS into a power outlet. The batteries charge to 90% capacity in approximately 3 hours. However, it is recommended that the batteries charge for 24 hours after long-term storage. Check the battery recharge date on the shipping carton label. If the date has passed and the batteries were never recharged, do not use the UPS. Contact your service representative.
UPS MAINTENANCE How to Replace Internal Batteries CAUTION Pull the battery out onto a flat, stable surface. The battery is unsupported when you pull it out of the UPS. UPS MAINTENANCE 3. 1000 VA models. Disconnect the red battery cable on the front of the battery (see Figure 25). Pull the battery out onto a flat, stable surface. Disconnect the black battery cable on the rear of the battery, then on the front of the battery. Disconnect the red battery cable on the rear of the battery. UPS MAINTENANCE 4. 1500 and 2200 VA models. Pull the battery out onto a flat, stable surface (see Figure 26). Press on the black tab on the battery cable connector to disconnect the battery. Replace the metal battery cover. 7. Replace the UPS front cover.
UPS MAINTENANCE How to Replace Extended Battery Modules To replace the Extended Battery Modules (EBMs): 1. Unplug the EBM cable from the UPS. If additional EBMs are installed, unplug the EBM cable from the battery connector on each EBM. 2. Replace the EBM. See “Recycling the Used Battery or UPS” on page 47 for proper disposal. 3. Plug the new EBM into the UPS as shown in Figure 27. For additional EBMs, plug the EBM cable into the battery connector on the adjacent EBM.
UPS MAINTENANCE Recycling the Used Battery or UPS Contact your local recycling or hazardous waste center for information on proper disposal of the used battery or UPS. WARNING S Do not dispose of the battery or batteries in a fire. Batteries may explode. Proper disposal of batteries is required. Refer to your local codes for disposal requirements. S Do not open or mutilate the battery or batteries. Released electrolyte is harmful to the skin and eyes. It may be toxic.

Plug the UPS into a power outlet for at least 3 hours to charge the battery. Press and hold the button for 3 seconds. If the indicator is still on, shut down the UPS and contact your service representative. The UPS internal temperature is too high. Shutdown is imminent (10 seconds). Save your work immediately and turn off your equipment. Turn off the UPS.
